Welcome to the castle
Just because I'm nosy (but you all knew that anyway)
Ok, readd stargazers post about feelings towards fandom, and pretty much agreed. I'm not feeling, 'fandom_y', as I spend most of my hobby time on-line at LJ and Twitter rather than be creative. I have my imagination in full flood, but not in a direction anyone else but I would be interested in. So a question for contary me who wants to keep up with the friends I've made through fandom, but feels less fandom_y

Click as many boxes as you want and have fun. Long rambly comments and talking to other commenters in encouraged.

Poll #1758783 Fandom activity

Do you feel you have 'peaked' with fandom (at least for now).

I will never 'peak' fandom is life
Yes, but because RL has taken over
Yes, but because of ill-health
Yes, but because of new creative ventures
I've not 'peaked', just moved onto other fandoms
I've not 'peaked', just don't create anything, but can squee with the best of them
I'm just waiting for something to grab me and shake me
I've not 'peaked', just have so much to do fandom wise
I've 'peaked' but for a reason you haven't listed
I've not 'peaked' you just haven't noticed/are not interested in what I'm active in

At the moment I do feel like I've peaked. It's a combination of RL (my job and my work with Random Acts), the fact that SPN is on Hiatus at the moment and the fact that I'm just not feeling inspired right now.

Part of me feels like it's time for me to move onto a new fandom but part of me isn't ready to leave my SPN fandom family.

I don't know. I need to mull on it for a while and see how I feel when S7 starts

I know the feeling. I've got to write two stories, but just not feeling 'it', nor can I get into the prompts. I've just never really got into another fandom like the Buffy!Verse and feel a failure because of that, and that I'm not active enough in any fandom. *sigh*

My fandom involvement peaked with Heroes and now that it's canceled, I'm not in any fandoms anymore. I still watch a lot of shows/movies, but I enjoy them on my own. Like a "normal" person, so to speak, haha.

I can relate.

not peaked yet, but I'm pretty sanguine about the fact that one day I will have... Life is change after all

Yes, life is full of change

I couldn't read the post in question, presumably because it's flocked. But I think I get the gist of things from the poll.

I've peaked in the sense that I'm not doing anything creatively in fandom, and it's possible I'll never be quite as active as I was a few years ago. Some of it is due to Real Life taking up most of my time, some of it is just exhaustion, and some of it is my interests are going in several different directions, so what fannish time I have is being divided more than it used to be.

For instance...I'm not finding Supernatural as inspiring for writing fic as I used to, because I don't much like the ways the characters have changed over the years. I'm all for change and growth, I just don't happen to like these changes all that much. I'm still curious to see where things are going, so I'm looking forward to next season. Maybe I'll start to like both the Winchesters more. I'm simply not all that attached to Castiel, so I'm not as emotionally invested in what happens to him other than how it affects Sam and Dean. I just don't have much enthusiasm for re-watching the last season, even though I have a mild curiosity to look for certain clues I overlooked earlier.

I've always, always, always been more interested in characters rather than plot. If a book series or show changes direction from where I think it's going, it might irk me, but as long as the characters seem to behave in ways that make sense to me I'm okay with it. That's why there are certain series I'll read faithfully even if I'm not that keen on the overall plot of the latest book. I care enough about the characters to want to know what's going on in their lives. There's also a certain amount of comfort in knowing certain things about some characters will (seemingly) never change.

If I lose interest in the characters, I might check in, in terms of reading recaps or other people's posts, or reviews, but if I realize I don't actually *care* whether or not these characters get out of the latest mess they've made of their's time for me to spend my valuable time elsewhere. Hm, and why do so many of the characters I like seem to create problems for themselves? I think that's something I'll need to give a lot more thought to, lol!

ETA: I should add that I have been somewhat active in fandom, of one thing or another, since about 1975, so I'm also feeling like maybe it's time to find something else to spend my time on, rather than spending most of my free time on the computer, or in front of the TV, or reading. I actually watch very little TV, maybe one or two shows a week most of the time, and I can go for months without watching anything. I keep forgetting to watch reruns of SPN on Friday nights, so that tells me something right there.

I think that, in a long running series there has to be something that keeps you comming back, and characters are a major part of that. If you don't care about them, or cease to care about them the story loses something.

I largely agree. If you find a character you care enough about you will continue to watch, but may no longer be interested in being fanish about if something happens which seemingly diminishes that certain character.

Hmm, to clarify I'd say I haven't exhausted my overall interest in fandom and actively write/participate in several fandoms. However I would say I've peaked - reached my limit with certain aspects of fandom or of people's behavior over a show/actors and especially cattiness from various cliques that form within a given fandom - I really try to steer clear of 'em. I've been in fandom just over 12 years back in the yahoo group days in various fandoms, so I've seen/heard via net/journals, and RL through slash cons & no longer have the patience with cliquey fandom peeps who IMO are vying to be the next BNF.

On just squee I only had 2 fandoms that really hit me hard where I pulled out- BtVS/Angel & Xena: WP was canceled. Xena:WP I really mourned Kevin Smith and couldn’t read any fic afterwards, and still haven't. Angel, I adored S5, Spike/Angel and the cancellation was divesting that I stopped writing. Although I’m happy to say my muse seemed to have returned. It’s mostly through x-overs and I’m a bit nervous writing in BtVS/AtS again; at the same time I’m also loving it =)

I'm pleased you are getting back into the fandom, but yes, other fans actions can diminish enjoyment
melodious329 From: melodious329 Date: July 4th, 2011 07:38 pm (UTC) (Link)
I feel like I'm still riding the high of the Kane RPS and LEverage fandom. I've moved on from SPN adn Highlander (though Highlander will always have a place in my heart and imagination). I feel like I'm still meeting people and still putting out a lot of fic (this is actually the first year I've particpated in any big bang) and I'm still interested in seeing conventions and concerts. I still have tons of ideas.

But I do think that one day I will probably move on from fandom in general. Like another poster said, sometimes you just change. BUt maybe I'll move on one day and then find my way back on another day :)

I noticed you were very busy in the background. Good luck with all your endeavours.

I think that, to a certain extent we all do. Then I guess it always holds a special place in our hearts.

I think I've sort of moved on a bit. Squeeing about QaF US, Gale Harold, Randy Harrison & co seems to fill the fandom part of my journal nowadays. However, I haven't abandoned my old loves. Buffy and Angel will always stay with me. There are also other fandoms I'm in but I mainly just concentrate on reading others squeeing about them and don't participate that much. *g*
woman_of_ From: woman_of_ Date: July 4th, 2011 09:37 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yes, we met through BtVS/AtS, and remain friends, but seem to no longer share a major fandom the same. The point being we remain friends.

In one way, I feel like I've peaked in the BtVS fandom. I still intend to write things, but I just don't have the interest in reading about it/discussing it.

I haven't peaked in SPN fandom, though the show itself may have peaked for me.
woman_of_ From: woman_of_ Date: July 4th, 2011 09:39 pm (UTC) (Link)
I've peaked in it as well. I'm not interested in messageboards etc. I still love the shows, but not really ready to put myself out there.

I'm interested in the show, just not in writing for it!
kudagirl From: kudagirl Date: July 5th, 2011 12:14 am (UTC) (Link)
I enjoy others shows, but BTVS will be my main fandom forever. Something about that fandom grabbed me. I followed all the Star Treks, but never did the fandom thing. I'm not writing drabbles as often. Mostly because prompts are not speaking to me. They just feel forced and the words do not fit right.
woman_of_ From: woman_of_ Date: July 5th, 2011 06:47 am (UTC) (Link)
Yes, BtVS and AtS, as well as Spike will always be a first love.

RL and health issues have seriously taken it's toll on my writing. That, and I don't watch much tv any more and what I do watch, does not inspire me to write.

I just crawl around lj to see what's going on with friends that are still here. Sadly, a lot have stopped writing and have abandoned lj altogether.

I'm glad you're still here, my darling.

Not abandoning LJ and my friends ever!

fandom is my life. I move from one to another with relative ease but there's always something I'm going nuts over. Every significant other I've ever had has been told 'I'm a fangirl, get used to it' mostly thats been ok.

Buffy kicked me off in a big way and I've been through Angel, LOTR, SPN, Dr Who and now Leverage.

I'll be a writer until the day I die, its just whio I am :)

Nice poll!

I enjoy too many things to spend all my free time scouring the internet for everything and anything to do with them..

so, for now I'll just watch and enjoy the shows I love and listen and enjoy to the music I love, and read and enjoy the books I have.

I sort of hope nothing ever captures my attention so much that I feel the need to devote so much time to it!
woman_of_ From: woman_of_ Date: July 5th, 2011 05:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thank You!

Yes, the days of endless reading of fanfic, pouring over manips etc seem to be over for me. I still enjoy the shows, but not so active in fandom now
beldam1 From: beldam1 Date: July 5th, 2011 07:33 pm (UTC) (Link)

Not a writer

Not a writer just avid reader. I will still grab up anything with Spike ( or other characters James Marsters has played) still tickled pink to read a new adventure or see and old one updated. sometime it replaces nights when TV is really, really bad. SPN lost it favor for me after second season. Haven't really been drawn that into any show or character since Spike. Though I do enjoy Warehouse 13, Eureka, Haven and some Sanctuary. Couple of new show coming in the fall that shows promise. Too bad about SYFY three inches though sounded like it had the potential to be a good one.

Re: Not a writer

I'm not even reading like I used to. The direction fanfic seems to have gone in is too hard-core for me, and makes me nervous to read any. Just not in the fandom mood I guess.
rozabellalove From: rozabellalove Date: July 5th, 2011 07:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
I think I'm reaching a point where my RL is busy but also I don't feel like I'm developing my writing as much as I wanted to so that's led to a sort of plateau where I now find it harder to write. I'm definitely writing less but I hope it's not because I've 'peaked', I hope it's just a phase :)
woman_of_ From: woman_of_ Date: July 5th, 2011 08:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
Could be just a phase. I used to write, but find now I just don't have the inspiration to. I guess, as at my peak it was BtVS/AtS, you would have missed that stage.
