... because outer beauty is what really counts.

I've watched the first four episodes of this season of 24, in part because I adore Katee Sackhoff, but also because it's such a dumb, ridiculous, addictive show. Thus far, poor Katee is not being served well by her storyline, to say the least.

Oh, darlin'. Why is your character so dumb? Giving your jackass ex-boyfriend (ex-partner-in-crime?) the key to your apartment so he can sort through your unmentionables? Not to mention just talking to him on your cellphone around a corner where anyone (like your fiance) could walk by, in full view of security cameras? Dana is apparently only partially clueless, as she seems quite capable and savvy as an analyst, even if she is a bit too perky (though I love her scenes with Chloe and cannot wait for the inevitable smackdown.) But the thing with Kevin is doing her no favors at all. I'm hoping that this storyline suddenly pays off in an awesome way, like that he's somehow tied to the terrorists, maybe via his time in prison. But I doubt it. I suspect that Arlo -- the idiot porn-watching analyst -- is going to be this season's obligatory mole; he certainly seems to be the one who gave Kevin the contact info for Dana. Though 24 tends to throw in several red herrings for each mole, so who knows? And while Freddie Prinze Jr. is doing a surprisingly good job so far, I snickered when Dana told her sister that she could lose her career over these secrets, then added her engagement almost as an afterthought. Poor Cole. Don't start picking out those bridesmaids' dresses just yet.

So, I was bored and went over to read the 24 boards on TWOP. I fully expected lots of hate for her storyline; heck, I even added my own eye-rolling to the mix. And I knew there would be some anti-Katee sentiment as bleed-over from Starbuck, who could be a polarizing character on BSG. Fine by me, even if I disagree. But alongside the other negativity was quite a bit of body-snarking. She's "mannish", with "big arms" and "looks like she got hit in the face with a brick". What? You might not find her conventionally beautiful, and that's fine. But those types of comments just piss me off, even when directed at women I don't already like. I spend most of my time in online environments that are full of smart, fabulous feminists who would never stand for body-snarking, so I guess it's too easy to forget how prevalent this shit can be. I've no problem with these jackasses saying that they don't find Katee attractive (even if that's in no way relevant to her performance), but the kinds of comments I saw above are quite unnecessary.

I'll just end with a quote from her great interview in Vanity Fair: "I think every character I play has a physicality to them, so I have to stay in some sort of shape. I’ll never be a size two. And I don’t want to be a size two. I’m going to make a size six look really fucking good. That’s as much as I can hope for."
