TCA Nominees

Yay for awards season! I love these things, even when my favorites don't stand a snowball's chance of getting a nomination. Today the Television Critics Association announced its nominees.

PROGRAM OF THE YEAR

John Adams
Mad Men
Friday Night Lights
Lost
The War
The Wire

Hmm. I can't *argue* with any of them, but I'm lukewarm about all except FNL. (I do like Mad Men, but it might as well have "Emmy Winner" stamped on its retro forehead. ;)

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN COMEDY

30 Rock
The Office
The Daily Show
The Colbert Report
Flight of the Conchords

OMGWTFBRETANDJEMAINE!!! I really, truly love this list to itty bitty pieces.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN DRAMA

Lost
Mad Men
Damages
Friday Night Lights
The Wire

Damages? Really? Huh. I mean, it was quite entertaining and well-done, but I wouldn't have expected it to be here (I seem to recall the critics being mixed.) I still think Lost is a wee bit overrated, though it's a good show. Really, I can't argue with this list, especially FNL.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT MOVIES, MINI-SERIES AND SPECIALS

John Adams
The War
Masterpiece: Cranford
Masterpiece: Jane Austen Collection
A Raisin in the Sun

Of these, I've only seen A Raisin in the Sun, which was great even though it depressed the hell out of me. ;)

OUTSTANDING NEW PROGRAM

Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Damages
Flight of the Conchords
Pushing Daisies

BRET!JEMAINE!WHEE! *ahem* Another good list, though I'm surprised again about Breaking Bad, because I didn't notice much enthusiasm about it or Damages.

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT IN COMEDY

Tina Fey (30 Rock)
Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?)
Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report)
Ray Wise (Reaper)

Tina! Alec! Fairly good list. I did like Samantha Who?, though I wouldn't say Applegate was THAT good. Quite interesting that this list doesn't have anyone from The Office or the usual suspects from other shows.

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT IN DRAMA

Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
Glenn Close (Damages)
Paul Giamatti (John Adams)
David Simon (The Wire)

MRS. COACH! I rewatched "State" on UniversalHD last night, and I fell in love with her all over again. And the TCA is an odd duck because it doesn't specifically give acting awards. The category is "achievement" in drama, which is why an exec producer is (deservedly) up there.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN CHILDREN'S PROGRAMMING

High School Musical 2
Hannah Montana
Curious George
Word Girl
Yo Gabba Gabba

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN NEWS AND INFORMATION

This American Life
Frontline
Alive Day Memories
Nimrod Nation
The War

... and I have no opinion about the last two categories. ;)

ETA: Sepinwall has a discussion thread about the nominations.

P.S. After scrolling through friendsfriends to find something earlier, I'd just like to proclaim my love of cut-tags and wish that more folks loved them as much as I do. *grumble*
