Like everyone else, I suspected something was up with Johnny the moment I saw that Dean Winters had been added to the main credits. Then the hints about Janet's new boyfriend sealed the deal. That, plus Deer/Maggie are a bit too quasi-incesterrific for me, but I can deal if it means more Shirtless!Dean. Mmm, yes.
While I'm fine with the Gavin family as the crux of the show, tonight's ep makes me nervous that things will shift a little too much over to them. I generally like the family's storylines, but I'm in it for the firehouse. They're what keeps me coming back to a show that, with any other group of actors and writers, would make me loathe it with an, er, fiery passion. Dammit, I love those wacky firefighters.
So, yeah. Not enough of the guys, but hopefully that'll change. One thing that struck me tonight was Probie himself. Until I read John Scurti's blog, I didn't realize Michael Lombardi is 32. He always came across as nearly ten years younger, with the goofiness and wide-eyed naivete. He looked so much older when he confronted Tommy and Franco on the sidewalk. Still very good looking, yes, but now he looks like an adult. I assume this is a conscious choice, given that Probie needs to grow up sometime.
In the teaser, I thought they were setting up Connor as Tommy's new ghost, but Jimmy's reappearance throws that up in the air. If so, could be an interesting storyline, but seeing a ten-year-old spouting ghostspeak would be a bit much.
Damien and Mrs. Turbity was a bit eye-rolling, even more so when she came on to Tommy. Then again, not much of a surprise with this show.
Janet is dead to me. DEAD. See asta77 for a more eloquent explanation. Yet another reason why this show *should* offend the shit outta me and make me hate it. And it does offend me, yet I love it. Dammit. I found Sheila quite interesting, though. While rewatching the first two seasons, I was struck by how different she was in the earlier episodes -- much more like she was tonight. Less flirty, more weary. The affair with Tommy turned her into a batshit harpy... which is pretty much in keeping with how Tommy tends to screw up others' lives, huh? I'm not sure the characterization shift was intended that way, but it's intriguing. I suppose time will tell.
Poor Lieu. Things aren't looking good at all.
But for all my fancy comments, I'm really just in it for the Sean. I missed you so damn much, my cute little Deer in the Meadow. God, I want an icon of him lighting the cigarette off the fire. Even without my obvious Sean bias (yes, he's stupid and dumb and idiotic and clueless and did I mention stupid? But he's also fucking hilarious and fucking HOT), the composition of that shot was just gorgeous. Mmm, yes.
And finally... I could watch those opening credits over and over. Another gorgeous composition, with the cinematography and music and shots of NYC. If you don't already have it, here's an mp3 of The Von Bondies' "C'mon C'mon".
I'm not quite at the hardcore fangirling stage for this show, but I do adore it. I'm surprised by how much I wrote above, since I hadn't expected to get all meta over it. ;) Plus, it's nice to have something new to watch over the long summer months.
Just curious -- how many of you watch Rescue Me? I get the feeling the fandom is near-nonexistent, but I've noticed more comments about it on LJ than I'd expected. Always a good thing!
Oh, and that promo for Nip/Tuck's new season made me twitch. When good shows go bad: September on F/X.
