the good, the bad but mostly good

I seem to do a lot of these catch-all posts.  I have this bad habit of starting a post but then changing my mind and when I do get in the mood to post, I go kinda crazy.

** Finally watched The Christmas Cottage and yes, it is cheesy (and not in that good HSM way) and schmaltzy and I don't care cause I kinda loved it.  Jared looked STUNNING in this movie.  Since I won't be watching F13 or any other horror movies he has done/may do in the future, I just glomp up any non-horror work he does.  Have not watched Ten Inch Hero yet *shameful* and my excuse is

** Merlin.  My new fandom.  I watched all 7 eps over the weekend using up the time I had alloted for TIH.  Oops.  Read a review by a LJ-er declaring that Merlin was awful but at least it's better than Robin Hood.  I love Robin Hood.  Guess I'm just a sucker for historically inaccurate British shows with pretty boys, what can I say?

** Went to the Leafs game last night with a co-worker, a partner and a client.  Had dinner at the Platinum Club (fancy!) where I will probably never set foot inside again.  Had a taste of foie gras and elk for the first (and probably last) time.  They allow guests to order dessert before the game starts, we come back during 1st intermission and it's there waiting for us.  How cool is that?  Of course, we ended up missing the entire 2nd period (although I was still watching on the tv screen) cause the guys kept talking.  Leafs lost in the overtime but it was an exciting game as we were down 4-1 at in the 1st period but came back to tie it in the 3rd.

** Although I haven't been attending Stitch-n-Bitch, I am still cross-stitching so I'm there in spirit!  Started a new pattern, a smaller one, cause I just had no desire to continue my 2 work-in-progresses.  The new one is about 1/2 done already and I'll post a picture of it when it's done.

** phetch  is coming!!  phetch  is coming!!  And we're going to see Matt Nathanson!  I have 16 days left to clean my place up.

** Yay for Obama winning!!!  But boo for all the anti-gay propositions for passing.  Although I read that California's Prop 8 is still too close to call?

** I'm loving SYTYCD Canada and all the shirtlessness we've been getting lately.  Blake from S1 is always either a judge or a choreographer.  We've had Benji choreograph for 2 weeks now, Dmitry *squee* was there last week and Mary was a guest judge.  Thank goodness Mary toned her shrieking down but her craziness was balanced out by awesome Rex Harrington who, god bless him, had no problems voicing his, and our, admiration of Nico's abs.  My co-workers and I have given up on trying to get tickets to the tapings.  The demand is too high and we are just not rush-line type of people.  Oh well.  Go Arassay/Nico & Allie/Danny!!

$2 seat tuesday

Shouting matches.  T-shirts being taken off.  Beer thrown.  Empty water bottles thrown.  Fights.  Cops.  Ejections.  Girls flashing their boobs.

Ah, just a quiet night at the baseball game.

Too bad we lost by a run in the 10th inning after tying the game with an awesome 2-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Note to self:  Don't go to baseball games on $2 seat night and sit up in level 500 with the hundreds of high school/university boys who get stupider with each beer they drink.

I haven't squee'd about the premier of Doctor Who yet so *squeeeeeee*.  Absolutely loved it.  I'm just so happy it's back!   The miming between Donna and The Doctor had me in hysterics.  I also loved the fact that Donna had luggage!  The Adipose were so cuuuuuute.  Is it wrong that I would totally sign up for that weight loss program?  The Adipose gets a whole bunch of little babies and I lose a bunch of weight.  It's a win-win.  :P  The last scene with Donna waving to her grandfather was just so lovely.

victor

At the Chicago Con, Mark Lutz promoted his new tv movie, Victor, about Canadian Olympic swimmer, Victor Davis.  I was flipping through the channels and discovered it was on today.  I watched the last 30 minutes (flipping between Victor and the Golden Globes newscast).

On a completely shallow note:  Sweet lord does Mark have a body on him  *droooooooolz*  I miss the days when swimmers used to wear speedos instead of the wetsuits that are popular now.  =)  According to wikipedia, Mark was a swimmer in his university days and Victor was a hero of his.

On a more serious note:  I had no idea that Victor Davis passed away in 1989.  He was 25 years old.  A few months after retiring from competitive swimming, he was the victim of a hit and run in Montreal.  Victor's family donated 6 of his organs.

Victor Davis at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics where he won gold in the 200m breaststroke, silver in the 100m breastroke and silver in the 4x100 medley relay.

RIP.

ETA:  Apologies if this post screwed up your f-list.  It looked fine on my home monitor but at work, it's stretching the page and I know how annoying that is.  Anyway, pictures are now behind a cut.

4-peat!!!!!

It was a close call but Team Canada got their 4-peat beating Sweden 3-2 in overtime.  The best part of the game, though, was the celebration after.  The boys just wouldn't leave the rink!  They even went into the stands 3 times and celebrated with the fans.  And continuing with our winter sports tradition, someone brought in a HUGE flag which was laid on the ice.  While watching the wrapup afterwards, I learned that another tradition has started as of last year -- the boys kissing each other, on the forehead, through their helmet face guards, etc.  Oh boys.  =)

Next year, the Junior U20 World Championships will be in Ottawa so a 5-peat is definitely in the cards.  I can't even imagine what would happen if Team Canada lost on home ice.  But one of these years, we're going to lose the gold and man, do I feel sorry for that team.

And yes, I can't believe not only that I just posted about hockey but that I watched the game!  Totally my brother's fault  ;)

barbers and football (huh?) and companions

Barbers. Well, one specific barber named Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street.

I saw this musical this afternoon. Going in, I knew nothing of the story (other than it's about a murderous barber) or its music.
I am still quite interested in the movie version. Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman, Helena Bohem-Carter with Tim Burton and singing? Count me in. Here's the trailer.

Football.  This Sunday is the Grey Cup (our version of the Superbowl) and the game is being held this year in Toronto.  I don't follow the CFL at all but I'm amused by the hardcore fans that have descended into the city.  The 2 teams are the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Winnipeg Bluebombers.  I'm seeing green (the colour for the Roughriders) everywhere and I've never seen so many cowboy hats being worn either.   I wonder where all the Bluebomber fans are.  Last Thursday, our firm had a farewell gathering for one of our managers at the local sports bar.  We noticed this group of HUGE guys coming in and sitting at the table next to us.  Turns out they were some of the Roughrider players.  I just couldn't get over how big these guys were.

And that's my first and probably last mention of football.  Ever.

Companions.  The Doctor Who variety, not the Firefly variety  ;)  I am now fully caught up in all the Doctor Who episodes.  I've already mentioned that IMO, Martha >>>>> Rose.  I also quite liked Donna Noble.  The way she would slap the Doctor when he went off on one his rambles.  Although, her yelling was getting on the nerves a bit but no where near how Rose would grate so I can deal.  Thank goodness the wait for new DW isn't too long.

Also, I can know fully appreciate "Time Crash" as I finally watched "Love & Monsters" so the LINDA reference went over my head the first time.  Didn't matter though, TC was just great all around.  Even though I don't remember the original Doctors, David Tennant's giddiness more than made up for it.  That end speech with the voice going high and the trainers and the glasses, "Snap!"  Oh bestill my fangirly heart.

fire bad, tree pretty

My brain feels like mush and I'm getting stressed.  I rarely get stressed.

The past couple of days hasn't been too bad at work.  There were very few tax returns in the "to do" box, I was able to leave the office early on Sunday, SwimmerDude wore a t-shirt & I got a glimpse of his tummy (hee!), my "in limbo" pile of files was on the decrease.  Things were getting done.  Thing were looking good.  And in one short hour, everything went to shit.  I have so much work and I'm just not up to it.

Last rant about work.  I promise.

6 more days... 6 more days...

I did that Virtual DNA meme that's been popping up on my f-list but the stupid thing wouldn't embed properly -- it looked fine when I previewed the entry but the actual post had the dreaded little red x's.  I'm not in the mood.

Oh yea, John Mayer was pretty good although I expected more.  He has such a great sense of humour but none of that came through on stage.  It was play a song, break while he switched guitars, play another song, break, song, break, song... you get the idea.  Minimal talking.  I would prefer to see him in a more intimate setting.  He sounded awesome though.  Someone lit up a joint during the concert, lol.  The smell is unmistakable.

GO RAPTORS GO!!!  We HAVE to beat that traitor, Vince Carter the New Jersey Nets.  I just want the Raptors to eliminate Vince Carter the Nets in this round and then I don't care what happens in the next round.

bend it like beckham

Growing up, my Dad didn't watch a lot of sports.   World Series, Grey Cups, Superbowls & Stanley Cups all passed by without a second glance.  Even the Olympics didn't make a huge impression.  But every 4 years, when the soccer football power nations gathered for the World Cup, that was when my Dad took control of the television (back in the days when we only had the one).

Football.  The beautiful game.

I love Toronto during the World Cup.  All the different national flags flying from cars -- Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, South Korea are the popular ones in my area.  This is the time of year when I discover where all the Italians live on my street  *grin*  I don't have a favourite team, I just like watching the games.  So many people say, "Soccer?  But it's so boring to watch!"  Which I can understand.  90 minutes and most games end in 1-nil or 2-nil.  But I love it anyway.  I'm a casual fan at best but for the last couple of World Cups, I've been getting more and more into it.

Of course, pictures like these help a lot...

From football players to Hanson!  How's that for 2 completely different topics?  This was going to be a strictly World Cup post but I saw these pics over at ohnotheydidnt (which generated 300+ comments, scary) and I had to share.  As some of you may or may not know, Zac Hanson - youngest Hanson brother and owner of the crate (little in-joke for those going "crate? huh?") - was recently married.  Of course this means... wedding pictures!
