i don't know whether to laugh or cry

So apparently there was an US Supreme Court ruling that upheld "Obamacare".  And I just read a flurry of tweets from irate Americans who think the country is going to shit and have declared they are moving to Canada!  One tweet literally says, "#SCOTUS holds up free healthcare for everyone?! Screw this commie country, I'm moving to Canada"

Ummmm, dude?  I think we need to talk about Canada for a minute.

sacrifice and beauty

Sacrifice: Japanese pensioners volunteering to help at Fukushima plant. OK 'sacrifice' doesn't seem to be the correct word -- there is little risk of immediate danger -- but my sleep-deprived brain can't think of another one. Touches the heart, reading stuff like this. Gotta give props to the Japanese, dealing with such a huge disaster and I haven't seen any stories about looting/rioting/fighting etc.

Reading challenge update:

(9) The Bonesetter's Daughter, Amy Tan. Typical Amy Tan that tugs at the heartstrings with the mother/daughter and Western/Eastern stuff.

(10) The Trumpet of the Swan, EB White. Cute but my adult brain did a lot of "really? A swan. Playing a trumpet. And can read and write. Really?!"

(11) Stuart Little, EB White. Same as above. And I did not like the ending. It ends quite abruptly, I thought.

(12) The Undomestic Goddess, Sophie Kinsella. Easy read. Completely predictable and everything was tied up rather quickly at the end but what else does one expect?

an angel and a king

RIP Farrah Fawcett. RIP Michael Jackson.

I never watched the original Charlie's Angels and know very little of Fawcett's career. And although I grew up in the Michael Jackson era and I still own the Thriller vinyl record, MJ had no dramatic effect on my own life. Both of them, for a time, became more famous for their personal lives than their professional ones. May both of them rest in peace.

the good, the bad but mostly good

I seem to do a lot of these catch-all posts.  I have this bad habit of starting a post but then changing my mind and when I do get in the mood to post, I go kinda crazy.

** Finally watched The Christmas Cottage and yes, it is cheesy (and not in that good HSM way) and schmaltzy and I don't care cause I kinda loved it.  Jared looked STUNNING in this movie.  Since I won't be watching F13 or any other horror movies he has done/may do in the future, I just glomp up any non-horror work he does.  Have not watched Ten Inch Hero yet *shameful* and my excuse is

** Merlin.  My new fandom.  I watched all 7 eps over the weekend using up the time I had alloted for TIH.  Oops.  Read a review by a LJ-er declaring that Merlin was awful but at least it's better than Robin Hood.  I love Robin Hood.  Guess I'm just a sucker for historically inaccurate British shows with pretty boys, what can I say?

** Went to the Leafs game last night with a co-worker, a partner and a client.  Had dinner at the Platinum Club (fancy!) where I will probably never set foot inside again.  Had a taste of foie gras and elk for the first (and probably last) time.  They allow guests to order dessert before the game starts, we come back during 1st intermission and it's there waiting for us.  How cool is that?  Of course, we ended up missing the entire 2nd period (although I was still watching on the tv screen) cause the guys kept talking.  Leafs lost in the overtime but it was an exciting game as we were down 4-1 at in the 1st period but came back to tie it in the 3rd.

** Although I haven't been attending Stitch-n-Bitch, I am still cross-stitching so I'm there in spirit!  Started a new pattern, a smaller one, cause I just had no desire to continue my 2 work-in-progresses.  The new one is about 1/2 done already and I'll post a picture of it when it's done.

** phetch  is coming!!  phetch  is coming!!  And we're going to see Matt Nathanson!  I have 16 days left to clean my place up.

** Yay for Obama winning!!!  But boo for all the anti-gay propositions for passing.  Although I read that California's Prop 8 is still too close to call?

** I'm loving SYTYCD Canada and all the shirtlessness we've been getting lately.  Blake from S1 is always either a judge or a choreographer.  We've had Benji choreograph for 2 weeks now, Dmitry *squee* was there last week and Mary was a guest judge.  Thank goodness Mary toned her shrieking down but her craziness was balanced out by awesome Rex Harrington who, god bless him, had no problems voicing his, and our, admiration of Nico's abs.  My co-workers and I have given up on trying to get tickets to the tapings.  The demand is too high and we are just not rush-line type of people.  Oh well.  Go Arassay/Nico & Allie/Danny!!

Fellow Canucks, y'all know about the National Do Not Call List

Fellow Torchwood fans, the Hub Convention was this past weekend and there was snogging (John/Gareth, Kai/Gareth) and flashing of bums (Gareth & Kai)!  Oh why wasn't I there?  *plans on going to Hub2*  Check out smirnoffmule 's LJ for awesome pictures.

Fellow SPN fans, I have still not watched "Monster Movie".  I fell asleep.  A couple of days later, sat down to watch the re-run on Space and fell asleep again.  WTH?  I can't download the ep til the end of this week cause I've exceeded my transfer usage and have to wait til my next billing cycle starts.  It's very frustrating cause I want to d/l the Kinkade movie nowwwwww

Fellow Terminator fans and musical fans.  I love it when my fandoms collide -- Thomas Dekker will be starring in the upcoming Fame movie.  How awesome is that?  Very.

Fellow peeps dealing with colds.  Hope everyone is feeling better.

Fellow HSM & Zac fans.   2 MORE DAYS!!!!  And the trailer for 17 Again is online (youtube link cause the embedding thing is driving me crazy)  It looks so cute and funny!  Is there a rule though that there must be singing and/or dancing of some soret in every movie Zac is in?  Zac even sings a little in Orson Wells and Me!

And now the word "fellow" has lost all meaning to me.

bad news wednesday

** 2 co-workers were let go today  =(  The one from my office (this firm has 2 offices), everyone liked so it was very surprising and sad.

** We're still blue, ugh.  Conservative minority government AND they even gained a few more seats.  NOOOOOOOO  Although, I am slightly amused that now, with Dion's leadership in question, some people are saying that Justin Trudeau should be the next leader of the Liberals because (a) he's a Trudeau; (b) he's good-looking and (c) his wife is a former model.  LOL

** According to TMZ, Gale Harold was in a motorcycle accident yesterday.  Seems there's conflicting reports on how seriously injured he is.  Hope he has a speedy recovery.

** I was just given the re-organization from hell to review.  BLAH.

** Oh, some good news!  My boss just gave me tickets to the Raptors game tomorrow.  Looks like good seats too.  Score.
kyle xy - matt hat

A little break from the Chicago Con squee (did I mention that I touched Jared?), I found this helpful link (thanks to a TWoPper in the Chuck forums) about what we can expect from our favourite shows as the strike rolls on.

Ausiello's Strike Chart

For the shows I watch, as of today, the # of episodes left:

Supernatural -- 4 to 6
Pushing Daisies -- 4
Reaper -- 3 to 5
Chuck -- 6
Heroes -- 4
Bones -- 6

Actually, that's more than I thought.  I was dreading 3 or 4 so I'm glad to see at least some shows have 6.  From what the boys said at the con, it sounded like they're filming #11 right now and #12 has been written.  I also have Kyle XY's part 2 of S2 to look forward to and, from what I understand, all those episodes are already in the can.  I wonder if the networks are going to drag out the airing of the remaining episodes, which will supremely suck.  I wish they would just air them consecutively and give me a clean break, so to speak.  That way I can turn off the tv without fear of missing anything.

the rising loonie

Our dollar keeps rising against the USD.  We've broken the $1.10 barrier.  This in turn has led to massive cross-broder shopping.  Unlike some of my friends, I have never been one for cross-border shopping.  However, since I will be in Chicago (IN TWO DAYS) this weekend, some shopping will need to be done.  Oh yes.  But I have this small, guilty feeling about being unpatriotic but I think that'll be overcome after some retail therapy.

I am now really glad that I opted to fly to Chicago instead of driving.  The news have been reporting huge lines at the border as custom officials are cracking down on the shoppers.

I'm also thinking about buying some British pounds soon in anticipation of my trip next summer.  5 months ago, we were at a 2.13, now we're at 1.93, that's savings of $200 if I buy 1,000 pounds.

What to do, what to do.  Economists are saying that the loonie hasn't peaked yet, some are predicting $1.20 against the USD in the new year.

for a brief moment, the CDN > USD

The big news around these parts today is the fact, for a brief moment yesterday, the Canadian dollar was worth MORE than the US dollar.  Granted it was only worth more by $0.0008 but still.  And today, for the most part, we are at parity.  The last time this happened was back in 1976.

Of course, my dad is now cursing cause he works in the States and then transfers the money back here.  With our high dollar, he's been "losing" on the exchange and he's not too happy about it.

It would be sweet if this continues to at least early November when I head to Chicago.  I have this sudden urge to do some cross-border on-line shopping now.  =)

Now, if we can only get parity with the British pound.    *afraid to calculate the cost of next year's UK trip*
