labour day update

For those enjoying a long weekend, hope you're having better weather than us! After a few days of hot & humid weather, it's been raining and cloudy and much much cooler. And I'm loving it! Even the rain LOL Autumn weather is my favourite.

Soooooo, as of last Friday, 5pm, I am officially unemployed again. My contract finally came up 2 weeks shy of me being there for a full year. The controller was really great and was able to extend the contract for a few months (my original contract ended in May). He also pushed for a permanent position but I understand why the bosses didn't go for it. There really is no need for me there with the original assistant controller back. A lot of what I was doing the last couple of months, they could hire someone at half my salary to do.

But have no fear! My unemployment is temporary as on October 1st, I will be starting a new job at another home builder (I just can't seem to escape the real estate industry lol). Unfortch, I still have to commute but this time, it's a 25 min subway ride and a 10 min walk which isn't too bad. I'll be doing basically the same thing -- financial reporting -- but it's one of those 'newly created positions' so who knows what else it'll bring. Starting at the same salary but once I pass the 6-month probation, it'll bump up another $5k in addition to me being eligible for the health benefits. I also get 3 weeks vacation and the company closes for the Jewish holidays so bonus days off yay!

All this means that September = vacation time! So many things to do:
  • friend's wedding
  • TIFF!
  • finish my cousin's corporate taxes
  • start studying for securities exam #2
  • take a short trip -- hoping to take a 3-day trip to Boston (I've only been there once years and years ago and all I remember is the horrendous traffic!)
  • go up to Algonquin Park to see the fall colours
  • perhaps some shopping cause new job calls for new bag, yes?
  • finally watch the shitload of movies/k-dramas/tv shows I have downloaded

* It's bad enough that Glee is doing a Britney episode but she's actually going to be on the show too?! The silver lining is that this ep will be focusing on Brittany -- maybe she'll even get a last name!

* Kurt Browning accidently sets his house on fire. His wife now has ammunition to last for a lifetime. "Oh you don't want to do this thing with me? Remember when YOU SET OUR HOUSE ON FIRE MORON?!?!!!"

* The amount of fic the Sherlock fandom is generating is insane and has basically swallowed up my f-list but I have discovered something that makes me sad: I can not read Sherlock/John slash fic. You know I love the slash and I definitely see the chemistry between the two. It's the whole Sherlock having sex thing. I just can't picture it. But not everything is lost! I've noticed certain fic labelled as "squint" as in: can be read as gen or, if you squint, slash. Now, if I only someone would do rec lists cause I don't want to waste time reading crappy fic.

* Rumour has it that NKOTB & BSB are planning to tour together. OMG I AM SO THERE

* Finished reading Mysterious Skin today. Wonderful book but hard to read in some places. Will definitely be watching the movie soon.

* I'm close to being offered a FT position at another real estate company (I need to pass HR still). Location is better -- it's on the subway line which knocks the commute down by half. I'll be starting at the same salary as I am now but if I pass the 6-month probation period, it'll bump up $5k. The only problem is that I'm not 100% sure I want it.

* bauersgirl, forget Salt cuz I just d/l'd it, we need to see Scott Pilgrim!

* I have run out of things to say...

I braved the Eaton Centre -- the big downtown mall -- after work as I had to return some stuff. On the way, I snapped some pictures of the holiday decorations in the area.

2 more day before I'm off for work. The office has been getting quieter and quieter as more people start taking their holiday vacation. It kinda sucks we have to work a full day on the 24th but the office is closed for the entire following week so I can't complain.

I hate that LiveJournal is blocked at work :( I read everything when I get home but I feel like I'm missing out on conversations, etc. I'm back to lurking again.

Just found today that John Mayer is playing here -- at a club! -- and the tickets went on sale last week. Of course, they're sold out now. However, $80 for a club show? Damn.

OLTL and the Nick/Kyle/Oliver SL is awesome! The Big Gay Mass Wedding drama! Loved Cole & Markko and Starr & Langston, the boys' respective girlfriends, pretending to be gay for the protestors. And Oliver. Sweet Oliver finally had enough and outed himself on tv \o/ If Nick wasn't around, Kyle would've jumped that so fast!

Has anyone seen "This Is It" or "Where the Wild Things Are"? I'm thinking of catching a movie Sunday.

I don't remember if I mentioned this before but the company I work for, the staff is like 90% Italian. Which means food. Lots of food. Someone brought in mini Oreo cheesecakes the other day. Today, there was Hallowe'en cupcakes! There's been chocolate, apple pie, leftover lasagne & pasta & veggies & sandwiches from meetings. And I hear it's going to get worse around the holidays! We also received the best ever e-mail from the office manager today informing us that the bosses have decided to close head office for the last week of December. Hell yeah.

This hiatus thing sucks. I haven't watched any television this week except for SPN.

I keep reading comments about Matthew Bomer aka Hot Dude from White Collar is gay and is dating some publicist. Obviously, he hasn't "officially come out" but this is the first time I'm hearing this. Damn, there goes another one ;)

I like the single cover so much more! And the single is exactly what I was expecting from Adam. LOVE IT. I can totally tell that Adam is going to be my "up" CD while Kris' will be my "mellow" CD. <3

a whole lot of random

* Work is going okay. Slowly getting in the swing of things but I have an office and I can listen to music so yay! They feed us a breakfast here 3x a week which is nice. LJ/FB/Twitter are blocked though :( I was amused to discover that while afterelton.com is fine, afterellen.com is not. No love for the ladies, IT peeps?

* Blew my first paycheque on a shopping spree and am now proud owner of another Burberry bag and a scarf. When did I become such a Burberry girl? Thank god I'm too big to wear the clothes. I have banned myself from Yorkdale Mall. I knew that store will get me in trouble!

* A contractor is coming by this Sunday to do an estimate for my kitchen & bathroom. The renovation ball has finally started rolling! Gotta take advantage of the renovation tax credit.

* DeRo are finally back together YAAAAAAY!!! Today's ep was just full of happiness and sweetness especially after a month of angst. I love how when one soap kinda drops -- hello, VL? Give Ollian something, anything! And the Knish triangle feels like it's on super slow burn -- another fills the void.

* Today is GLEE day!!!!!!

* Have been drinking way too much pop/soda lately. Must put a stop to that.

* Nuit Blanche this weekend. Anyone doing this? I want to check out the Vanity Fair exhibit at the ROM.

* Kris Allen single, "Live Like You're Dying", me like. A little disappointed it's a cover but whatevs. And finally listened to Adam's cover of "Starlight". Prefer the original but he gets props for bringing Muse to my attention.

* TV round up: HIMYM and Big Bang Theory still rock. Missed the FlashForward pilot -- didn't know it was on til too late -- but yay for finally having something to watch before SPN. Merlin is AWESOME. I love that show so much. The Amazing Race is back with surprise elimination at the starting line (ooo, that's gotta hurt to be eliminated right off the bat) and duck herding in Vietnam! Animal challenges are always the best.

look! a non-tiff post

Today is my last day of TIFF stalking as, wait for it, I start work tomorrow \o/ It's that contract job that I was waiting on for weeks and when they finally approved it, I made them wait for another week as I had another opportunity in progress. They wanted me to start as soon as possible so I had to sacrifice the last half of TIFF. It's cool cause most of the big celebs have already come and gone. Besides, in case you missed it, I GOT MY PICTURE TAKEN WITH GASPARD ULLIEL, so everything else is just gravy. Today is going to be a long day. Let's hope it's a successful one!

Apologies to the Jensen girls but this had to be reposted because it's totally true

job search update

Funny how life works sometimes. I hear nothing for weeks except for the occasional interview with a headhunter/agency and bang! 4 interviews in 1 week. And while I was on the phone with Interview #2 just a few minutes ago, someone leaves a voicemail regarding possible Interview #5. What the hell? Is everyone back from vacation or something?

Interview #1 - controller with a well-known not-for-profit. This was a prelim telephone interview and so far, my choice if I had to choose. Location is kinda far but it's accessible by subway and I'll be going against the traffic so that's a plus.

Interview #2 - senior accountant with a large, international design/engineering/consulting firm. Just had the prelim telephone screening interview. Not sure if it's a right fit though. I'm not too keen on working for a large company. And they're growing too which means more pressure and stress.

Interview #3 (tomorrow) - mat leave contract position with an insurance company. Eh, it's insurance, it's a contract position but it's better than nothing.

Interview #4 (Thurs) - another mat leave contract position with a residential home builder. I used to work for a home builder and I didn't like it. It's also way up in the suburbs but we'll see.

Possible Interview #5 - another home builder, damn. I really shouldn't base my decision on my one bad experience but what is it with me and the real estate industry? OK, that one was a bust. They're looking for someone with IFRS experience which I have none. But the lady said she'll keep my resume on file in case something else pops up.

On one hand, it feels good to be getting these interviews but man, I hate interviewing. I'm really not good at the whole "selling yourself" aspect.

a smorgasbord of stuff

Guys. I am so bored right now. I have done nothing today, NOTHING! There's no work. Enjoy it while it lasts, right?

So, what have I been doing?

1. Collapse )

2. Watching a very cute video of Thomas Dekker thanking the fans for fighting to save T:SCC.

I love that he left a voicemail for Fox! And he's too adorable for having just woken up.

3. This weekend, the lottery is at $40m and everyone chipped in at the office for tickets. So of course, this meant perusing the real estate sites and looking at multi-million dollar homes that are currently on sale in the area. We sure can dream, can't we? If we do win, it'll come to $1.4m per person. Not too shabby *crosses fingers*

4. Collapse )

5. It's the long weeknd for us. I'll be spending it doing much needed spring cleaning and maybe catching a movie. 1.5 hours to go...

today is my day off

Our firm is closed today, yippee!! So far, I ate breakfast, watched the latest SPN episode, talked to my mother on the phone twice, made a massage appointment for Sunday, read 2 Merlin/Arthur fanfics and basically been a lazy ass. So far, so good :)

Tomorrow, off to Stratford with shoebox2 to attend a book launch for rj_anderson. I'm really looking forward to this!

I am now going to get off my lazy ass and go outside to enjoy the weather. Then meet up with R to see Wolverine.

PS. I heart scruffy!Colin so. That is all.
