Let's just get one thing straight from the beginning -- yesterday was all about Kiefer. Sure, there were other celebrities who I was excited to see but only Kiefer would I endure standing for almost 4 hours in heels for (correction: Kiefer & Kalan)
The following takes place between the hours of 10 am and 1 pm
I met up with a good friend, Rina, and a whole group of Kieferettes plus 2 guys -- 12 of us in total. The original plan was to go for brunch but the restuarant we chose was closed for the day due to a gas leak so we ended up at a Tim Horton's. Everyone knew each other from Television Without Pity (TWOP) and/or other Kiefer boards. Some ladies travelled quite a distance. We had people from Texas, San Francisco, Cincinatti & Nova Scotia.
We spent the next 3 hours chatting, discussing, fangirling & dissecting all things Kiefer with one of us occassionally running out to see what was happening at the red carpet. I discover that 2 of the group also post in the CI thread over at TWOP so that was cool.
At 1pm, we decided that we've monopolized the tables at Timmy's for long enough (although the employees there were very kind to us) and figured it was time to line up.
The following takes place between the hours of 1 pm and 4 pm
A small line had already started so we join in. A girl, late teens, behind us had a shirt that said, "I'm carrying Kiefer's baby Jesus". Heh.
Because we had tickets to the gala and it was a black tie affair, we decided we should change before entering the red carpet area or else we wouldn't have the time. This is how I ended up in heels for the rest of the day. Why didn't I just wear my runners with my dress (who cares if it would've looked stupid) is beyond me. And then we proceeded to wait in line. Under a blazing sun with little breeze. It was not a pretty sight.
Around 2:30, the line finally started to move. We had to go through security, present ID, get our wristbands & gala tickets only to move about 50 feet where we stood in line. Again.
3:30 -- we are finally allowed to enter the red carpet audience area. Basically, we were all lined up along the red carpet, both sides. Those in the back of the line sat on the bleachers behind the media scrum were they could watch the unveiling of the stars.
The red carpet ran down Yonge Street for about 1/4 block. Anyone could stand along the sidewalk on one side of Yonge but it was pretty far back. By 4pm, there was quite a crowd already gathering.
The following takes place between the hours of 4 pm and 5 pm
For the next hour, we are treated to giveaways (I got an autograph book & sharpie), a MC giving out instructions & other MC-related stuff, and watching Ben Mulroney & Tanya Kim rehearse for their e-Talk segments. Tanya was quite approachable, she came over, signed a few autographs. Ben did not. If anyone tried to get his attention, he usually just waved or smiled but never went over to the crowd. We also saw Anna Cyzon (Top32 in CI2) who has landed quite the gig as an e-Talk reporter.
A lot of the non-celebrity guests start to come down the red carpet. Some lady wore a dead fox. In 30 degrees weather. Disgusting.
The following takes place between the hours of 5 pm and 6 pm
And then the first celebrity and inductee arrives -- Alanis Morissette. She was surrounded by people – security, her assistant, media people, etc. This was actually true for all the celebrities so it was difficult to get a decent photo unless they were basically standing right in front of you or you had a great zoom lens. Alanis signed lots of autographs (I managed to get one) before she had to be whisked away for media. She did come back out after she was done for a bit which was great of her.
And then it kinda becomes a huge blur from then on. Ron Sexsmith goes by. Some of the other inductees who I didn’t recognize right away – Daniel Lanois, Pierre Cos…, Rex Harrington, etc. Hey, it’s Lloyd Robertson (news anchor), Rod Black (sportscaster) & Seamus O’Regan (Canada AM host)! Kelly Rowan (Kirsten from The OC) was there but she never made it to our side of the carpet so no picture. Jake Gold & Zack Werner. I somehow completely miss Paul Anka walking up the red carpet.
Jason Bateman. I saw him way down at the beginning of the red carpet and he was signing autographs. But before he even made it halfway up the red carpet, he had to zoom up the rest of the way to do an interview. So, this is my only picture of Bateman – his back as he zips by us. We were hoping he would come back out but he never did.
Michael Buble. What a cutie. He stayed so long near the front, signing autographs & doing tv interviews, I was afraid that he wouldn’t have time for the rest of us. But he was a sweetheart and tried to get to everyone.
The man of the hour arrives and the biggest cheer of the night erupts. Even Lloyd Robertson, when giving an interview, said tonight, everyone’s here to see Kiefer. We can see him making his way slowly down the red carpet. He’s signing lots of autographs. Rina & some of the gals were able to get great shots because a lady standing behind them basically used her 2-year old daughter to get Shirley Douglas’ (Kiefer’s mother) attention who promptly got Kiefer to go over & sign the child’s shirt. Another gal, Rachel, asked to touch him and he took her hand. Words were exchanged but she can’t remember a thing. Rachel is now going to chop off her hand to get it bronzed, LOL! Kiefer is now basically standing right in front of me. Sigh. I wasn’t able to get an autograph which is fine. He didn’t make it much further because he had to go do media. His assistant did tell us that Kiefer will come back out. So we waited.
After about 15 minutes, out he comes again. This is where the 4 teenage guys standing beside me came in handy. They were able to get his attention and he comes back over. Still wasn’t able to snag an autograph but I did get more pictures. Of the 4 guys, there was 1 who you could tell was the real die-hard fan of the group. He was able to talk a bit to Kiefer and afterwards, he had this glazed look and said, “this is the best day of my life” before heading off with his friends. Awwwwwww.
We finally decide to head into the theatre. We thought we could just walk in through the doors but no, we had to walk down the red carpet ourselves. This is when we realized that we could’ve been on the red carpet with all the other celebrities. D’Oh!
The following takes place between the hours of 6 pm and 9 pm
We watch the show and I’m just really really really happy to be finally sitting down. Best part of the night was Michael Buble singing My Way as part of Anka’s tribute. He changed all the words to honour Anka and it was just awesome.
The following takes place between the hours of 9 pm and 10 pm
Show is over and we go hunt for food as none of us has eaten anything since noon. We find a pizza place & proceed to rehash the day and look at everyone’s pictures.
And so goes a great 12 hours.
