helping out

For the past 20-something years, 2 of our partners go to Massey Centre, a home/centre for young mothers, and do tax returns.  Every year, they bring a few staff along with them and tonight, I went.

My co-worker and I were actually quite nervous and the reason was kinda silly.  I haven't done a tax return manually for almost 10 years and she has never done a tax return manually, LOL!     Because of computers and tax software, doing tax returns have basically become data entry in a way -- just punch in the numbers off the slips and the software does the rest.  You learn so much more doing them manually.  Actually understand how everything comes together, how certain tax credits work and the like.

... yea, I'm not going old skool.  Computers all the way!

Although if I can just say this.  Teenage mother, her only income is ~$7K in social assistance yet she pays ~$9K in rent and drives a brand new Toyota.  Things that make you go hmmmmm.  The last girl there had her 5-year old (almost 6!) son with her.  So. Cute.  He was so polite and sweet and went around asking everyone how to spell their name and writing it down.  *awwwwwwwww* I know I did one return wrong -- I forgot to reduce her tax payable by her credits -- but at least when the government corrects it, she'll end up getting an extra $180.  Now, I'm totally in the mood to finish my own tax return but all my stuff is at my parents' house.

OK, no more tax talk.  My Torchwood download is at 83%, yay!
