Back home

And we're back. The jet-lag has kicked in, and I'm somewhat woozy, so activity by me here may be low for a day or two. The cats were fairly pleased to see us, although they are now informing me that they got Much Better Service from tamaranth and that we need to shape up.
We had a largely good time. I am now hugely tempted to go to World Fantasy (as mentioned). So:

WFC is the last weekend in Oct/1st weekend in Nov, and this year it's in San Jose.
The other choice is stay home with the marquis, which is always nice.

Milford is an annual week for published SF writers to workshop short stories and ongoing novel projects in a peer-to-peer situation. It takes place in Snowdonia and this year it's 24th - 31st October. For more information see: http://www.milfordsf.co.uk

Kari - the choice is yours but it would be lovely to see you at Milford again (hence my vote).

I'd love to do both, but they overlap. Hence the umming and ahhing.

Kari,
Great paneling with you, but no time to talk! That was the story of my Worldcon, glad that yours seemed to include more of such talk.
And oh, how I missed the British-style of Green Room that I remember fondly from Glasgow's Interaction. So many panels needed that ten minutes of prep time!

It was a good site for not quite connecting with people -- there were some folks I kept bumping into, but others, like yourself, who I didn't get to see properly at all. Which was a shame.
I like British GR best, it has to be said. But then I would, I guess.

World Fantasy does not feel at all like Worldcon. It is a professional networking event, normally limited numbers (750 or so, I think). By all means go, but don't expect the same feel.

"It is a professional networking event"

That's kind of overstating things: there's a far higher percentage of pros at WFC than at WorldCon (or Eastercon, or most other cons), but there are still plenty of "others".

It does have a very different feel to it, though, and its being so much smaller helps. For the most part, I prefer it.

I am deeply disturbed that they got better service from me. I assumed they would be queuing up to tell you about the abuse, desperate calls to RSPCA, inhumane treatment and how I wickedly and cruelly ate all their food while they starved. I did finish off the sliced chicken in the fridge

Re cons: you are a filthy clean and wholesome pro so World Fantasy Con is your stage!

I'll be at World Fantasy, if that makes a difference. It's just over the hill, so I'll be commuting through the mountains.

Who are you, and what have you done with the real Kari? :-)

I know what to take to Milford. Wales in the autumn -- sweaters, jeans, boots. WFC if I go will definitely need advice, though. What on earth is the weather like in San Jose in November?

Speaking on behalf of the ConCom, we'd love to have you. In our support I note that the Fairmont San Jose has a great bar and the city has many fine restaurants. The convention is, as friend Thog rightly points out, much more low key and intimate. While it does have a lot of professionals attending, many of whom were not at Worldcon (Jeff Ford, Peter Straub, Garth Nix, Tim Powers, etc.), a lot of Bay Area fandom is going too, a lot of us because we are running the show.

I will be in the bar, with Chris Roberson, and a bunch of Australians who are drinking strange pink stuff.

I love strange pink stuff. (I spent Worldcon drinking Rosee d'Hibiscus beer, which is strange and pink and beer-of-the-gods.)
Goes to look at prices of flights.

If you spend the entire con in the bar, you will have more networking, and friend-making, opportunities than you would at any two WorldCons. Plus it's a lot more intimate. Plus you can stay with me for free in my new house in Sunnyvale, about a ten minute drive from the hotel. And I'll introduce you to all of the local fantasy writers that I know (which is quite a few).

That would be lovely and I'm very tempted. it's been far too long since I've seen you and I'd love to catch up (and meet the turtles). And I want to hear all about what you've been writing. Another writer friend -- desperance, who I think you know online, at least -- is havering about coming over. It's very pushy of me to ask, but would you have space for him, too? He's a very easy house-guest and a gourmet cook.

World Fantasy does sound rather fun.

Light, layerable clothes and a light jacket/cardigan is usually safe.
