too many deaths... [26 Jun 2009|12:55am]
[ mood | sad ]

Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson.

I remember Ed McMahon from "Star Search" I used to watch when I was little, but perhaps he was most famous for his role with Publisher's Clearing House.

My 6th grade teacher used to say " If life were fair, I would be Farrah Fawcett, laying on the beach with a half nakid man." Lol I have no idea why I remember that but I do...

Michael Jackson - one of my first memories of my sister and I playing together and not trying to kill each other is jumping on my mom's bed to "Thriller". Lol I think I was 6 and she was 4!

And let's not forget David Caradine a few days back.

Ahhhh the memories.... and a sad loss for all of those kids of the 80's out there.

Advance In Making Stem Cells From Skin
Posted by kdawson on Monday March 02, @09:53PM
from the we-don't-need-no-steenkin'-viruses dept.

Medicine Science
KillerBob writes with an advance on the news from a year back that stem cells can be produced from human skin — discussed here. Now Canadian researchers have found a safe way to generate stem cells without using viruses to modify the genome, a process that can have its own dangers. "The ethical debate over embryonic stem cell use may soon be moot, thanks to a Canadian team of researchers who, together with a team out of Scotland, has found a safe way to grow stem cells from a patient's own skin. The revolutionary finding, described in a paper published yesterday by the international science journal Nature, means doctors may be one step closer to treating a multitude of diseases, including Alzheimer's, diabetes and Parkinson's."

If I ever go back to school as in university... it will be a 180 flip for me. I would get a degree in genetics... and anthropology :)

P.S. Max Payne (movie)is boring... even the fact that it's blue ray isn't saving this film for me.

ok it is fantastically freezing.... [16 Dec 2008|12:05am]
[ mood | amused ]

In Dallas today. I am used to living in places where the weather is cold cold. I mean growing up in WA - wasn't the warmest nor driest of places but 27 degrees is just a tad nippley even for my tastes.

This is the first time I have ever seen it rain down my windows in rivulets and then watch the same streams freeze in place to the screens on the windows where they are still frozen hours later.

I hope it is not too icy to drive in the morning.
And to think... it was 70 degrees a few days ago.

Twilight Vampire Clans? [24 Nov 2008|01:42pm]
So my friend Tommy and I were discussing which clans the Twilight vampires would be in from Vampire the Masquerade/Requiem and here is what we came up with:

Vampire Vampire the Masquerade Vampire the Requiem
Edward Toreador Mekhet
Emmet Gangrel Gangrel
Alice Mekhet
Rosalie Daeva
Jasper Ventrue or Mekhet
Carlisle Ventrue
Esme Mekhet
James Gangrel
Victoria Tremere Daeva or Mekhet
Laurent Ventrue

There are a lot of gaps for VtM as my most recent play has been on VtR so let me know what you think! Let me know if you disagree and why as well!

When making this I disregarded the fact that in Masquerade those embraced by one person of a certain clan would be chosen to be in that clan. I took them at their abilities and character descriptions.

If I went by embracing(some were embraced by Carlisle) they would all either be a family of Toreadors or a family of Ventrues.

Carlisle embraced:
Edward (to save him from the plague)
Esme (to save her from herself after she tries to suicide after a stillborn birth)
Emmet (after Rosalie drags him home after being mauled by a bear.)
Rosalie (after another pack of vampires do horrible things to her and torture her)

So you saw Twilight this weekend... [22 Nov 2008|05:36pm]
[ mood | amused ]

I went with a couple of friends to see Twilight opening night(it was like being at a boy band concert surrounded by hundreds of screaming teen girls) just waiting in line to be seated. I just hope they actually read the books as well.

As for my review of the movie... all I can say is wow. I liked a total of three things in the whole movie. Please keep in mind that with the exception of the 4th book, I loved them all. First the Movie starts out disjointed, scenes were out of place as were conversations and maybe Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson should have actually read the books before playing the characters.

In the beginning of the the book it progresses a bit like this:(SPOILERS!!)
Hi I'm Bella. I hate the cold I hate the cold....
Hi I'm Edward, I hate myself for wanting to kill you and suck your blood, but I want you more than anything I have ever encountered before. I don't know if I can trust you with what you know about me.
Bella: Whats wrong with you? Why do you hate me?... Why are you always here. You can trust me...I am confused...
Edward: I want you, but shouldn't be with you for your safety. I can't help myself, I am drawn to you.
Bella: I am confused... I think I know what you are... I like how your attention makes me feel. I am hesitant about everything....except you...
Edward: I want to suck your blood. You are more alluring to me than any other person in the universe.
Bella: I don't care what you are, I love you...
Edward: I want you... in all ways... (except sexually because I would crush your head)
Bella: Let's be together... tell me everything about you and your family.
Edward: I am no good for you, I love you but the only thing that will prove that is if I can let you go.
Bella: I love you, I want to be with you forever, I don't want to grow old. Make me a vampire so we can be together forever.
Edward: I can't turn you into a monster. I will stay with you and love you for now because I am weak, but eventually I will have to leave you. Hey it's prom - let's go.
Bella: I can't walk straight without bodily injury and you want me to dance? Are you crazy? I love you so of course I will go with you and dance on your toes.

Ok so I had to re-write that a few times, it kept coming out with a sarcastic tone as if I didn't like the books. Honestly I loved the first 3 books and have read them multiple times.

Here is how the movie felt to me:(Spoilers!)
Bella: Hi I'm Bella, I speak oddly as if I was the one that lived centuries ago.
Edward: Hi I'm Edward I hate you
Bella: you keep looking at me funny
Edward: I hate you
Bella: Hey there you are again looking at me funny
Edward: I hate you
Bella: Hey I am going to make stilted guesses about what you are even though I have no clue about you because all of these important scenes in the book where I would find out this information are left out. Yes I have decided, I will check out books and guess you are a vampire.
Edward: You know what I am, I love you, but I shouldn't stay with you. I will make weak protests about having to leave you.
Bella: Oh I know I haven't shown it before(except to randomly quote one line from the book about how I was certain of 3 things and one was that I love you - but hey you weren't there for that anyway so you have no clue about that either) but I love you don't talk like that, ever around me.
Edward & Bella: Hey it's a prom. yay lets dance and stuff.

So the three things I liked about the movie you ask?

1. Charlie & Bella's relationship, in the movie it is much more developed than it is in the book and it makes charlie a lot more personable and actually a bit funny and warmhearted.

2. The argument scene between Bella and Edward at the hospital after she is almost crushed by the ever avenging minvan was straight from the book and well acted. I loved it.

3. Some of the Casting. Emmet was perfect although we didn't see or hear nearly enough from him throughout the movie. They took out the escape scene from James where Alice, Emmet, Bella and Edward are in the jeep together(in the book it is one of the most memorable Emmet scenes as you get to see his personality and get to know him better. I was sad this wasn't included. The Actor's that played Billy, Charlie and Carlisle were also excellent.

KS & RP were ok as Bella and Edward, I just wished they actually knew the characters or had read the book or if they did that it showed in their acting because you don't get the feel of an epic love story between these two in the movie like you do in the book. (And just for Pjaye - Gone with the wind is NOT an epic love story unless you count love between girl and dirt.. bleh)

The actress for Rosalie was horrible.... there was nothing good about the person picked for the part or her acting... uhg..

The actor for Jacob was all wrong.. he was too much of a baby throughout the whole movie... His acting wasn't bad, but he only had all of 3 scenes so there wasn't much to go on. I think I could actually grow to like him as Jacob if the screenwriters don't muck up his lines.

The movie wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. All in all I would recommend reading the book instead or waiting for the movie to come out on TV. It had excellent potential. I hope the author makes changes before the second movie is made...

The ONLY excellent thing to come from this whole movie was the soundtrack. It was incredible the whole way through the movie and for the most part the music made up for the feelings lacking in the scenes.

My favourite Poe... (Just to brighten your Monday!) [17 Nov 2008|11:07am]

Author: Edgar Allan Poe

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love -
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulcher
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me
Yes! that was the reason
(as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we
Of many far wiser than we
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
In the sepulcher there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Breaking Dawn.... something missing... [03 Aug 2008|01:33am]
[ mood | disappointed ]

First I would like to say that about a month ago, I picked up Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse to scan them for my 11 year old cousin to see how appropriate they actually were. I was surprised to find that I fell in love with the books and SM's quality of writing. I quickly devoured all three books, returned to the bookstore and promptly bought and read The Host as well. All 4 books were read cover to cover within 2 days. Since then I have read them all a few times over again.

So naturally I lined up for the new book and devoured it the night it came out. I didn't dislike the book. I know there are a lot of readers that disliked the "message" of the book and the story in general but I wasn't one of them. I was entertained but the book lacked the haunting quality that the first 3 books have. I felt disassociated from all of the characters that I previously had loved.

Add to that confusion in parts of this book due to lack of consistency in the story. Rosalie is suddenly her best friend and the child's most avid protector because of her own selfishness yes... but why does Bella continue to shun Edward and welcome Rose around her? The same rose to whom she is nothing but antagonistic towards in all 3 of the previous books. I think this would have been alleviated if this portion of the book had been written from Bella's point of view, instead of Jacob's.

I actually really liked that she added some of the story from Jacob's point of view, I just wish it hadn't been this part of the story. I feel like I lost the largest part of the story when SM switches perspective just as Bella learns she is pregnant and returns home.

I just felt something was missing. In the end, I no longer related to Bella, Edward,Jacob and never with Nessie. My overall review would be that the book was a good entertaining read but lacked that special haunting quality the first three parts of the story contained.

That being said, I can't wait for Midnight Sun, I hope SM sticks to the format of the first chapter she has available on her website for preview...
