music: I Know What Love Is - Celine Dion

::steps into empty observation lounge, choosing to leave lighting low::

::shifts baby weight to rest against shoulder, moving a hand up to offer support::

::moves to viewport, stroking thumb across soft back soothingly as Jenay stirs from sleep::

::closes eyes for a long moment, savoring each soft hiccup::

Shh...

::smiles slightly as fuss tapers off, shifting bundle in arms again, turning to offer better view::

::uses free hand to point::

Those are stars, Jenay.

I've seen all of them-and I promise you that the view is far more lovely from this distance.

::jumps slightly at sudden intrusion, turning to face annikahansen::

::offers a strained smile::

Seven.

I hope I didn't disturb your sleep...

I find sleep in itself disturbing. You did not.

::folds hands behind back, tilting head to observe jenay_paris::

Is it not past her 'bed time'?

Yes, well, I didn't want to leave her alone with her father, he needs sleep...

::shakes head, bending to sit squirming baby on deck::

I somehow doubt she finds the change from routine disturbing either.

::straightens, glancing back to former drone::

I'm given to understand that you were very helpful during Tom's...pregnancy.

::quirks brow::

Commander Paris is apparently a person inherently in need of help.

::hides smile, moving to nearby sofa and taking a seat::

::motion for the former drone to come as well::

Perhaps.

Why did you discontinue your efforts?

::stares uncertainly::

::relents at persistent urging, sitting gingerly on edge of cushion::

With your return I did not believe my continued involvement was either necessary or wanted.

::nods, moving gaze back to Jenay and watching haphazard attempts at crawling::

I suppose that must be a human idea.

Perhaps.

::considers remark, furrowing unadorned brow::

Your point?

::smiles again, absently, losing self briefly in memory::

On Ocampa, our family units were by nature extremely small. Having no such thing as extended family, our culture adapted to an almost communal system for child-rearing.

I see. A collective.

::attempts to relax, settling further back on sofa and transferring gaze to child on floor::

It has been my experience that humans seem to find such a system damaging to the formation of individual bonds.

I think that's a bit of a generalization, Seven. Humans simply aren't cohesive enough as a species to fully understand the benefits involved.

You and I have both had differing experiences...with limited living space underground Ocampans were forced to accept close quarters, and as a drone you did as well.

::reaches over to touch an arm briefly, drawing other woman's attention back::

Now, I'm not certain I'd like for Jenay to be assimilated...but I do believe you have a great deal to offer her.

At the moment, no more than you...and likely a great deal less.

These attempts to include me in your...family unit...are not necessary.

Family unit.

::sighs slightly, rubbing hands together::

Seven, I can hardly attempt to include you in something I'm not certain I even have a place in.

I'm not the person I might have been. It's too late in the day.

::exhales slowly, standing and pacing a slow path between two companions::

Jenay is a blessing I have no right to claim, and very little left to offer. I don't know that she will ever belong to any time or any universe, but I know that you are one of the few people who could possibly empathize.

I want you to grow with one another, Seven...and when I'm no longer here to support him, I want your strength to be Tom's.
