Stop Mississippi Amendment 26!

Signal-boosting, because this needs attention and... well, frankly, it needs to be stopped.

Due to the efforts of an organization called "Personhood USA" (yes, really), this November Mississippi will be voting on an amendment to the state constitution which states:

"The term 'person' or 'persons' shall include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof." This initiative shall not require any additional revenue for implementation.” (italics added)

Seriously? "Moment of fertilization"? So.... if you and your husband undergo in vitro fertilization, what are you supposed to do with the extra fertilized embryos, which are now constitutionally-protected "persons"? What about women who miscarry? Can they be subject to criminal charges? What about the morning-after pill-- which prevents a (hypothetical) fertilized embryo from implanting itself into the uterine wall? Is that manslaughter?

Regardless of what you think about abortion, this amendment is really terrifying in terms of scope, and what it would mean for women's control over their own bodies (yes, when you are pregnant, you have to think about eating for two, how what you do will affect the fetus, etc.-- but that's not the same thing as saying "the moment the sperm shows up, that cluster of cells has the same rights that you do, and you're going to be subordinate to that").

My election commentary consists of....

I would call my folks right now and congratulate them on all the campaign work that they did in a state which was not expected to go for Obama/Biden, but apparently has... except that I am sure they are asleep (and would thus reach through the phone and strangle me).

After an evening of election coverage, I am horribly annoyed that I missed the actual moment of the announcement, because I was giving somebody a ride home (and figured that I had time-- hah!).

However, I heard Obama's speech, which I am very happy about. Historic moments aside, it was an excellent and articulate speech (*offers up grateful prayers for president-elect who does not mangle the English language).

Tomorrow, I shall have to track down McCain's speech (about which I have heard excellent and gentlemanly things; props to him for that), and also the actual announcement, with explanations and maps and so on. Whee.

Right now, it is kind of tired out.

McCain wants to know: "Do you have Prince Albert in a can?"

Ok, so... it's not really so much that the Republican Party keeps calling the apartment.

It's not even, really, so much the fact that these are all pre-recorded calls, in varying flavors of chipper ("Hi-my-name-is-Joe-and-let-me-testify-about-why-McCain-is-great") or condemnatory ("Hi-my-name-is-Susan-and-let-me-tell-you-why-Obama-is-a-socialist/terrorist").

... it's that all of these calls are for SOMEBODY WHO DOES NOT LIVE AT THIS NUMBER.

Dear GOP:

Continually leaving pre-recorded messages adddressed to "Cheryl" for a household where there is no "Cheryl" may reassure me that you are not, in fact, evil omniscient tappers of everybody else's phones. How-eh-ver.... it really doesn't make me feel tremendously confident that anybody over there would do a great job if they had control of the reins of government.

Obama/Biden support list collection

Through the powers of e-mail forwarding, something that my mom sent out to me and the Sibster earlier today. Thought it might be of interest to folks (both in the becoming part of the list sense and the, "Huh, that's really interesting." My guess is that they're aiming to show that XX chromosome does not equal AUTOMATIC PALIN SUPPORT KTHX .... I just have this image of the Republicans sitting down to decide on a VP candidate and saying, "Right, well, clearly we have to find a chick who can be the candidate, 'cause the other side has somebody who is not an old white guy, and girls vote with their chromosomes, so if we have somebody with proper XX qualifications on the ticket, they will automatically vote for us.")

*commence forwarded e-mail*

I recveived this email from an old friend this morning; she is a friend and a biology professor at a State University on the East Coast. I thought you would be interested in seeing this message and hope you will either sign up, or if one of the few males on the list, you will forward this message to your wife, partner, daughters and daughters-in-law.

Next week the Obama campaign would like to roll out lists of hundreds of thousands of American women -- homemakers, teachers/educators, nurses, businesswomen (non-profit and profit), community organizers, medical professionals, et al - who are willing to publicly endorse Senators Obama and Biden as the next Democratic President and Vice President of the United States.

This list, which will be made available to the media on request, will illustrate the breadth and depth of support for these candidates among American women across the country. Please send an e-mail - NOW - to Katheryn Rosen with your name, profession, city, and state. Her address is: krosen@paforchange.com. THEN , reach out to at least* ten (10)* other women in your network, by forwarding this message, ASAP.

NOTE: Women who are affiliated with organizations that may not be appropriate for endorsement, can endorse on a personal basis rather than an affiliated basis.

EDIT: Hmmm... ok, personal attempt to use e-mail address in the original letter seems to have bounced. Not sure what is up with that; am attempting to figure out if other folks (ie, my mother) have had the same problem...
