Good news: There is an open source cola.

Bad news: It was developed by a company co-founded by Cory Doctorow--egomaniac, hack writer, asshole extraordinaire. (I say this in reference to his World of Warcraft/Quake III Arena story in Best American Short Stories 2004, which was one of my workshop textbooks last year and CURSE YOU DOCTOROW FOR MISREPRESENTING OUR GENERATION AGRAJAGARAFOAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM)

Better news: OpenCola went out of buisness, and the recipe is now free for all to use.

Even better news: Richard Stallman famously said, "'Free software' is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of 'free' as in 'free speech', not as in 'free beer'." Well, hey--free beer.

On a beverage-related note, I may or may not be addicted to fruit.

jeez, no wonder the big companies don't like open source.

And I thought it was illegal to make your own beer in the US. I could be wrong, but I know it's still illegal to make moonshine (aka "White Lightning").

Not illegal to make pop, though. Well, as long as you get that public license thingy, and even then I imagine that's only for if you distribute it.

And Doctorow = teh sux0rz. I say that without having read that story, but considering what you're saying, then I'd likely agree.

Oh man, I couldn't even get through the first paragraph, and I can take quite a bit of literary abuse. But man, the pretentiousness in the first bit alone was too much for me.

That guy needs to pull his head out of his ass.

Egomaniac or not, I've liked his writing.

Woo!

I hate his writing. He has a very solid grasp of technique, but all he ever writes about are twisted, cariacturized depictions of the "Internet generation" and how Napster and MMORPGs make us so different from older folk, with their old-fashioned fax machines and snail mail. His stories explode into a smorgasbord of concepts familiar to Internetfolk--globalization, MMORPG addiction, and the like--but they never explore these concepts one inch beyond the level that would amaze someone who has never heard of them. Also, his depictions of the teenagers of our era are so horribly skewed that I can't help but think he's just cashing in on how in touch he is with all the stuff the hip kids are doing these days. He's the modern equivalent of the guy who writes Archie.

And the only reason why he got published in Best American Short Stories 2005 is because he gets published in salon.com, and Best American is desperate to prove that it's "hip" and "with it" enough for younger readers to buy. I hate Best American so much.

He also shamelessly rips off Ender's Game, for no reason aside from the fact that the book is popular among the people he writes about, and he takes the metaphor backwards in the stupidest way possible ("hey, you know what? Ender's Game is just like a video game!").

I guess--though "free" is a bit of a misnomer because the ingredients for cola are hard to find and expensive in small quantities.
