The hanzi/kanji in the last panel reads "idiot", for those of you who aren't fluent.

Found on the gleefully anti-fetishist Hanzi Smatter. Americans fetishizing hanzi look just as stupid as Japanese people fetishizing English.

Yeah, to his credit, he has pretty good penmanship even if he doesn't know what it means. I often forget how to write that one too.

On the other hand, reading kanji in Japan is like being transported to the Tang dynasty. Signs say "ご遠慮ください". In Chinese, it would mean "please think ahead", but in Japanese, it is "please refrain." Perhaps the Japanese take is the older one--Chinese has evolved a lot in modern usage.

非常 = emergency exit

空港 = airport

Those two particularly amuse me. I love how they confuse Chinese-speaking tourists.

非常? 非常什麼?

Also,

台灣人都是性"院"的. ^_^

...I remember going to La Roca's in New Brunswick, and seeing this "OMG BUY ME FOR I AM BLUE AND HAVE A DRAGON ON IT" shirt. There was some stuff in either chinese or kanji but bollocks to that, I didn't care, because, I mean, DRAGON.

So, the week after, I end up walking alllll the way down College Ave. to this one barbershop where a sweet little ol' lady cuts my hair, peers at my shit, then says "Your shirt says "Hidden Tiger" all over it, but he's right there on the back, fighting with the dragon. That's kinda funny."
