As the song has been increasingly secularized by a century and a half of insincere American Christianity, few people understand that context these days. Mark Twain did--he did an extremely nasty update to the Battle Hymn that, despite its astounding relevance to the current situation in Iraq, has sadly faded into obscurity. As much as I love the Battle Hymn, and as much as Twain hates it, I have to admit that Twain, a contemporary of the song's original lyricist Julia Ward Howe, makes a pretty good point.
