Well, I'm back.

You know, I was going to do an entry about SIGGRAPH, but I just don't have the energy. I thought I'd give it a few days for the jet lag to flush out, but no dice--for some reason, it always feels like 5 AM after an all-nighter, at all times of day, and if I'm not feeling exhausted and sluggish I'm hungry to the point of scarfing down slices of white bread because my stomach is too desperate to wait for a sandwich. So nothing about SIGGRAPH for now.

I blame diet. I need to find that perfect balance where I'm eating enough so that I'm not starving all the time, but I'm not eating so much that it makes me feel sleepy and bloated, and in a way that doesn't make me blow my drawstring-tight budget or spend all my time cooking. Doesn't help that half the things I know how to cook require frying things in vegetable oil. Going to try and cut back on that.

Of course, I could be wrong. Just you wait--maybe by the end of the month I'll have given birth to a tiny, squealing alien parasite.

My job is starting for reals, and I've been scrambling to move out of the setup phase so I can actually get something done by the end of the summer. Get moving, Kevin! There's only so much time left!

Current fridge contents: cold cut turkey breast, frozen spinach, frozen peas, ten eggs, a jar of plain tomato sauce, a jar of mayonnaise, a package of Swiss cheese, and five cherries. Also dry noodles, cheap oat bread, soy sauce, two cans of soup, and a canister of grated parmesan in dry storage.

In possibly related news, I have come tantalizingly close to perfecting my recipe for crispy roast chicken breast. (Not plural. Just one.)

Summer 2006 expenses:

plane tix Oberlin-NJ-Taiwan-San Fran 1466.36
plane tix SF-Boston roundtrip (United) 798.90
plane tix SF-Oberlin (Continental) 194.30
rent June San Fran 700.00
rent July San Fran 700.00
rent Sep Oberlin 280.00

LUXURY EXPENSES (printer/toner, computer games, comic books) 90
LIVING EXPENSES (food, soap, laundry, taxi/bus/train, ATM fees, everything else) 1094.55

Living expenses went to about $200 a week, even though I was shooting for around $60-80. For the entire month of July I was living off a bag of frozen chicken breasts, a bag of frozen peas, Kraft Singles, two boxes of vitamin-fortified orange juice, and three bags of cheap white bread. This was enough to make one and a half meals a day. For the sake of comparison, my total living expenses in Oberlin over Winter Term--in which I bought twice as much food, and at much better quality--were $40 a week.

In fact, in terms of living expenses in general (minus rent and transportation), I spent as much in two months on food, laundry, and toiletries as I did my entire junior year at Oberlin. And yes, this is taking into account the costs of eating CDS.

I am increasingly of the mind that anyone who can afford to live here--even modestly--is wealthier than anyone deserves.

I just turned on the lights and made a blanket igloo.

I haven't done this since I was, oh, eight months old.
