e.t. phone home

So I talked to my mom on the phone tonight, and I realized that aside from impromptu swearing lessons and the occasional snatch of song, this has been the first time in many months that I have talked to someone--really talked to someone--in Chinese.

It feels so weird. It's like I've rediscovered my ethnicity all at once. I'm a totally different person in Chinese. A much shallower and more easily excitable one, at best. I don't have an accent when I use simple words, but I appear to have a strange habit of never knowing what to say--if only because my brain is searching for words I don't know.

On a happy note, thanks to the machinations of her friend Angel, my mom is now the guardian of a little gray kitten named Happy. A tiny creature to love is exactly what Mom needs right now, and I'm glad she finally got around to having one. I look forward to meeting it when I visit home this summer. I hope it likes me.
