Now I know wikipedia isn't the most reliable source of information, but some of things it says about Oberlin are pretty fascinating:

  • Dascomb was the first co-ed college dormitory in the United States.
  • When North, South, East, and Dascomb were built, they were so ugly that students held protests. Students continue to hold meaningless protests over campus issues to this day.
  • Marc Cohn, the guy who did the song "Walking in Memphis," was an Obie.
  • So was one of the founding fathers of Mozambique. (Think you can rule the world? So did he.) He transferred here as a junior at the age of 31.
  • So is this minor Mormon prophet.
  • So was this former Premier of the good old R.O.C. Taiwan represent!
  • The Oberlin-Wellington Rescue. Fuck yeah.
  • The town of Oberlin was founded because a bunch of pastors down south thought Elyria sucked. No joke.
  • The town also houses the largest air traffic control center in the United States. It controls air traffic in six states and part of Canada.
  • The Con is the oldest continuously operating music conservatory in America. It was designed by the same guy who designed the World Trade Center.
  • There's a book about Oberlin by Nat Brandt titled "The Town That Started the Civil War." Yay!
