P&P - morning

So I watched The Jane Austen Book Club again, and it's official: I have a girlcrush on Emily Blunt. This means I must pull out The Devil Wears Prada yet again but somehow that's ok :D HAVE to see The Young Victoria!

I love at the end of TJABC that one of the guys suggests reading the Patrick O'Brien novels next. MUCH LOVE. What's funny about that is that I'm being a stickler for reading them in order, which means it's pretty much dumb luck whether the library has a copy in of the one I'm up to. I'm stuck on 'The Fortunes of War' I think.

Has anyone seen District 9 yet? Mixed reviews on Twitter I notice. But still want to see so hard!

Twi-hard

So, finally, I am reading Twilight.

... yes, I know I'm about 2 years too late in terms of fandom, but I finally folded. I *HAD* to see what all the goddamn fuss was all about.

I'm about 10 chapters in. Must admit, it's got me interested. I wouldn't call it UN-PUT-DOWNABLE but I sure as hell was more looking forward to reading on the train this afternoon than usual.

I have a question - and yes, I know it's probably been over-analysed already, but it's new to me!

Is Bella a Mary-Sue?
She has quite a few of the inevitable characteristics. She's clumsy (so special!), ordinary-looking except also yet so indefinablt unique in some ways (glints of red in her hair!), independant, brave, intelligent, cool, loyal, knows her own mind... etc. etc. Oh, and she's the new girl in town who everyone flocks to because she so INTERESTING. (LOL. This makes me think of those thousands of Harry Potter Mary Sues that were always the New Girl at Hogwarts. Hee.) Pretty sure she's going to end up with the hero also (GASP).

And yet she lacks a few of the more extavagant feartures of the true MS. She doesn't have secret powers (so far, anyways... don't spoil me please. By by the gods, if she turns out to be physchic or telepathic or something I will laugh SO HARD), doesn't have violet/cerulean/sparkling emerald eyes or raven/honey/titian hair. So that's a plus.

Problem is, I can't decide if I like her yet. Hmmm....

What do you all think?

My car is now totally fixed. I've spent a couple of hundred bucks but he's now got 4 new tyres, reconditioned shocks, and wheel balance and alignment. And now no longer makes alarming noises when I drive him. Yays.

I now have a LBD and a little feathery rose thing for my hair for Melbourne Cup Day (work always has a fashions on the field thing so we dress up) but the dress is not suitable for my high school reunion, which is next weekend! Argh, wardrobe panic!!

Am reading Patrick O'Brian again after the longest break from naval sagas of all description. Loving it. Just the language! Sigh.
LOTR

new fannishness, yays

Am officially now obsessed with Georgette Heyer novels. She writes regency stuff (like Jane Austen, only easier to read and, I shudder to say it, with slightly cooler heroines) and also detective-y stuff (like Agatha Christie, but less stuffy).
It seems I am not the only one. I can only get her novels on the 'returns' shelf at the local library. She gets around, that Georgette!

Crap, I can't remember how to do a hyperlink that opens a new window. I got as far as < a href = "" > and know there's something before the > but it's been so long since I did any interwebs stuff... halp?

Football and dragons

Football is on tonight - State of Origin II for those foreigners interested. I just can't raise the enthusiasm - rather curl up with my book.

I have been reading the second book in the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. I got interested when I heard PJ has optioned the movie rights, and then got hooked because it's basically the Napoleonic Wars re-written with DRAGONS. Awesomeness. So there's enough sea-faring adventure to keep the Naval fangirl in me squeeing, spiced up with some cool dragon-riding shit. I highly recommend these books.

Speaking of dragons, finally saw Eragon the other day. Rather surprisingly liked it - any thoughts from the peanut gallery? I was scoffing a bit at the stuff basically copied off the Pern novels :p

So apparently ASH lives in Bath. Thanks, flist! So I totally was not hallucinating! I am happy now I have seen a celebrity, though confirmation has come nearly two years after the fact.

Am very antsy this evening. Flyboy is coming around and we'll probably watch Supernatural. I am missing him even though I only saw him yesterday. This is uncharacteristic of me but I don't want to examine the emotion too much for fear of discovering... something emotionally deep I guess.

I'm reading a book called Holy Cow by a former radio DJ chick who moved to India for 2 years to be with her foreign correspondant boyfriend/husband and it's making me want to go there and NEVER go there by turns. I'm up to the bit where Sep 11 happens and she freaks out because her boy is in Kabul at the time and then has to stick around to cover the war and she's so scared he'll die and stuff. It's harrowing to read. Perhaps that's why I'm antsy?

Also, you all have to go congratulate nawl_v on her new job!

Holy shite

Was anyone else besides me forced to read 'Bridge to Terabithia' in primary school? I just found out they're making a movie of it. It's spinning me out because I cannot remember a single thing about the damned book except the name! Loving the poster however.

There definately needs to be more hours in the day. Preferrably a few more towards dawn, so I can get a few more hours of sleep every morning. I shall have to talk to God.

Am re-reading The Devil Wears Prada. This book makes me anxious and stressed just reading it. Thank heaven I don't have a boss like Miranda. The movie's out here soon, will be interesting to see how much they changed it.

Sekrit messages for nawl_v:
- have you seen this? Interesting, no?
- also, Nacho Libre is out this Thursday 14/09
- thank-you so much for lending me Kirkby's Changeling! I really enjoyed it. You were right, I am ruining my brain with romantic mush.
