You just never know.

One of my high school teachers just died. This past week, his car went off the road into a river in Costa Rica. His wife, in the car at the time, survived.

All the things I remember about Mr. Rideout are positive. He was eccentric, talkative, and funny with a dry, dry sense of humor. He Shanghaied our sole class on grammar to go on a diatribe about how China would someday take over the world. He shared a lot of himself with us, and though only snotty-nosed grade 8ers, we appreciated it.

His wife was many years his junior, having been a student of his when he taught at college…It stuns the mind and heart to imagine having to pick up the pieces of your life after a loss like this, but I hope she can do it.

Goodbye Mr. Rideout, I’m sure your last adventure would’ve made one hell of a story..
