Take me home..

If you have the time, and I highly suggest you make it.

Check out this stand-up show that Bill Bailey did.

My favorite bits are Part 2, Part 4, but really, it’s all good. Fucking hilarious man, awesome musician, consummate entertainer.

No subject is too big or too small: Lord of the Rings, Terrorism, Hitler, swimming with dolphins, marijuana cookies…it’s all there. Including a rendition of the English national anthem as performed by Portishead and The Hokey Pokey..as performed by Kraftwerk (Part 5!).

Fortuitous:

Heh, amusing news for you former John Abbott Liberal Art-ists... Guess who I ran in to on the 211 yesterday afternoon? Go on guess.

Irini Tsakiri. Oh, what a world.

When I was in LA I was lucky enough to take her Ancient Philos. class in my last year whereas the program actually dictated one take it in the first semester. Everyone I knew had horrifying tales of those 55 min. sessions and I personally believe the schedule was set up that way so that a student's mind would be properly broken before the real indoctrination started in semester II. But by the time I got around to her, I was used to the.. ah, confrontational manner of LA profs and had a great time watching her work her magic (someone actually broke into tears once).

So contrary to the reaction of most, I was thrilled to see her and we had a terrific hour-long conversation about foreign aid, anarchism, adoption, religious influences and my hair (yes, some of it's fake; it took about 14 hours to do; and no, I'm not ready for an afro...).

She also asked me to come in and speak on Buddhism to her students taking "Constructing Reality." I'm psyched! My fear of public speaking is manageable and I'm looking forward to seeing the group she describes as, "great, interested, and engaging kids." It'll be nice to do something meaningful with my time.

Shake you money maker:

After the hilarious Johnny Canuck and the last Burlesque, cloquewerk, messiahdivine and me went to Lafleurs and I polished off a tofu dog and fries against my better judgement. At 12:00 in the morning, I really should have known better...I'm pretty sure I had a heart attack as I lay in bed later in the night.

In the face of what is obviously the death rattle of good taste/substance in pop-culture I fear I was grasping a little too frantically at the-good-old-days I'd never even seen in an attempt to regain... something, I'm not sure what. Johnny featured some pretty arcane stuff: burlesque, The Marx bros., word/sight gags etc. I'm not claiming it was "high art", but the fact that everyone in the audience was getting and enjoying it all made me feel the situation is a little less desperate. Maybe I can relax my grip.
