help? funeral poem for a friend

Sep. 5th, 2012 | 01:09 pm

hey poetry people - mr bf has emailed asking:

I wondered if you knew or could find any shortish poems featuring architects or builders that might be suitable for a funeral reading?

i am about to go looking, but if anyone has any suggestions, it would be much appreciated. i wondered if something about building or architecture (as opposed to -ers/-s) might work too. time is an issue, clearly - hoping to let him know if i've had any luck before i sleep tonight.

thank you, wikipedia

Aug. 31st, 2012 | 06:48 pm

having realised i probably need to read thoreau (for tangential course related reasons) i took myself to wikipedia for the Bare Life Facts and feel this is clearly a VITAL one:

Thoreau also wore a neck-beard for many years, which he insisted many women found attractive. However, Louisa May Alcott mentioned to Ralph Waldo Emerson that Thoreau's facial hair "will most assuredly deflect amorous advances and preserve the man's virtue in perpetuity."

eh eh eh.

also, hello lj i have been on holiday and written my last essay and now: DISSERTATION TIME. eep.(except it's an MA diss so only 12,000 words. that seems like... not enough words!)

important xena related query

Jun. 16th, 2012 | 08:45 pm

i am reading about badass normals on tvtropes, and:

Xena herself wanders in and out of this trope. It's possible that she doesn't apply at all, because it's implied but never confirmed that she's Ares' daughter.

but... doesn't... don't they fancy each other quite a bit? (i am SURE i recall them getting all warm about each other) and, yes, i know: greek gods - totally down with that sort of thing! but in an american tv show?

next on my kindle reading list:

Wesley Crusher: Teenage Fuck Machine

"an edifying fable in which the Enterprise's resident rascal has a sexual awakening during a threesome with a barbed-penised cat man. Also, Captain Jean Luc Picard is walloped in the gonads."

tardington is writing sherlock fic:

Sherlock screamed as he was devoured by a grizzly bear. He felt extra sad that Watson had been eaten too, and also Mycroft. Even that guy Moriarty who had the same voice as the guy from the IT crowd had been eaten. Who's idea had been the mystery-themed cycling trip across alaska...?

Back in london the wee old cleaning lady (land lady? what was the deal with her?) laughed evily.

THE END FOR EVER.

ps Lestrade gets eaten as well. Twice!

my head hurts.

A little nerdy perhaps, but this book looks ace: A History of Energy: Northern Europe from the Stone Age to the Present Day

(For values of "ace" that might be quite specific.) (This is why it takes me so long to buy other people presents online.)

In other news, hi internet you are all lovely and I am off to bed with a Narnia AU. An epic and depressing Narnia AU.

3 things that make night time bike rides in the winter blackness of Penultima Thule less enjoyable:

Dec. 7th, 2011 | 06:03 pm

#1 realising halfway round your route that, actually the back roads roads are QUITE slippy in places, what with the slush that is freezing again now it's dark.

#2 and that your bike is fitted with Schwalbe Kojak tyres. Which may not be the MOST suitable for these conditions:
http://www.trisled.com.au/images_content/kojak.jpg

#3 two miles from home, after several miles spent trying to maintain enough forward motion to avoid the kind of low-speed wiggling progress that would mean trying to steer on icy slush (and thus crash) but still slowly enough that if you do fall over it won't be excessively damaging, you notice the battery warning on your fancy 900 lumen LED front light is flickering red. But you do not worry. It should have at least 30 minutes more light in it before it--- SUDDENLY TURNS OFF, PLUNGING YOU INTO RURAL DARKNESS JUST AS YOU HAVE REACHED A CLEAR STRETCH OF ROAD AND BEGUN TO SPEED UP. Ohshit. But it's okay! For you have with you a spare, though less impressively bright, front light that will be more than sufficient to get you home, and it is - hmm - sitting in the hall where you left it last week. (Thank fuck there was a bit of a moon showing, just enough to ride (very slowly) the rest of the the way home without ending up in an icy ditch.)

Conclusions:

A. perhaps it is time to buy some knobbly winter tyres
B. battery charging, blah blah, spares more useful when they are with you, what would Scott have done*, eh, etc. etc.
C. the Excessively Expensive Winter Cycling Overshoes bought after two winters of icy icy feet were absolutely worth it, as my toes were pretty much the only part of me to stay warm throughout the exercise.

*something less efficiently than the Norwegians, but with a much stiffer upper lip, obviously

i have not abandoned the uncapitalised life BTW, but i have been writing updates in Open Office as semagic was being weird & it has been fixing them for me
