dw :: ten/rose :: worst day of my life

the season finale many years in the making

I don't post much on LJ anymore but some moments feel like they ought to be memorialized here, since they sort of started~ here. Like this one:

goldy_dollar and I went to the Wizard World Philadelphia con to see David Tennant and Billie Piper, which was completely surreal. That part is all a bit of a blur tbh -- for one brief moment in time David Tennant and I were touching each other which is truly the important thing lmao.

Adding to the surreality was that joining us to the con was bazat89 -- FINALLY after all this time I have seen Liz in the flesh! It was awesome and generally too brief. bluetooth16 was there too! I've met a lot of internet friends over the years but the combo of Liz + Amanda + David + Billie was something else.

I ALSO got stopped by someone named Claire who said she had read my LJ and my fic, which was awesome -- hi Claire!!!
eng :: words words words

so this is what it feels like when doves cry

  • My paid account expires soon, which is super weird? I've had a paid account for so long, it feels almost traitorous to not have one. AND MY BLESSED ICONS. On the other hand, I'm not really making enough right now to justify the expense, especially with LJ so quiet. Oh LJ. I miss your heyday. So naturally this made me want to update lj!
  • Life is pretty okay. I like work, mostly, although I need more hours, but at least I have some kind of purpose and the company is really cool. It's interesting working for such a small company because all my previous jobs were with quite big organizations. We went go-karting a couple weeks ago! The CEO drove me home!
  • I've also been driving more and have become much more comfortable with the highway et al. Of course, this is just in time for it to start snowing and totally fuck with my life anyway.
  • On the 13th I'm going to one of those "live" (except, uh, not) screenings of Richard II, with goldy_dollar and a couple other assorted people. I've never gone to see one of these play/theatre broadcasts so that should be interesting. I also need to brush up on my Richard II because at present I have basically no recollection of the play at all, despite studying it. Woops.
  • The 16th is my friend's birthday and I think we're going to a spa? Which... I'm actually not super thrilled about because I'm not a spa person, but it should still be pretty fun. I am more looking forward to the "hang out afterwards with food and wine" part.
  • On the 18th I'm seeing Eddie Izzard with a friend. He's been in town before and I missed him so I'm glad we were on top of things this time. Live comedy is so great and Eddie Izzard is so great, I'm pretty pumped.
  • And then the 23rd is of course the infamous 50th anniversary. Since goldy_dollar has RUTHLESSLY ABANDONED ME in favour of being a lawyer, I'm going with two university friends to the 3D screening here on the Saturday. I was a bit skeptical about spending money on something that is available for free and will likely not be great, but on the other hand I really like seeing things in big busy theatres, so I'm hoping the general air of excitement and fun will help make the whole thing a better experience for me. So I'm excited, more for the experience of seeing two people I haven't seen in ages and being in a big chattering crowd than anything else. Prayer circle the ep doesn't suck as hard as it could.
  • And at some as-yet-undisclosed date... S2 OF THE WALKING DEAD GAME.

THE MOST ANTICIPATED MEDIA-RELATED EVENT IN MY 2013 LIFE. WHAT DO I NORMALLY DO WITH MY HANDS, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY, OH MY DARLING CLEMENTINE

If you haven't played The Walking Dead Game I 100% recommend it and it is far more of a storytelling experience than a... zombie action game experience. AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR S2, COME TO MEEEEEE

I will post about my trip soon probably. Also probably my questionable future and such. In the meantime, have this post:

Today I went downtown to hang out with lacunaz for like 45 minutes which was great fun. Eden marks the fourth new LJ person I've met in the last two weeks. (SORRY EDEN YOU ARE THE LATEST IN A LONG LINE.) Then I went out for coffee with Frances which turned into an entire day-long event, because clearly we haven't spent enough time together recently. (During this we did a headcount, and I've now met 20 internet people, I think. THAT IS QUITE A LOT.)

We watched some of s3 Community since she is behind, which brings me to my main point: OMG I AM SO UPSET ABOUT THE DAN HARMON THING. I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO WATCH THE S3 FINALE EVEN THOUGH I DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED BECAUSE I AM SO CRUSHED BY THE IDEA OF IT BEING THE LAST 3 GOOD/REAL EPISODES OF COMMUNITY. UGHHHHHH. At least if NBC had cancelled it they would be the last 3 for real. Now we are going to have a fourth season that will in all likelihood be BS, and even if by some miracle it's better than I anticipate it will never feel like the "real" fourth season of Community. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Ugh I am so distressed. NBC, what have you done. I will allow this gifset to illustrate my feelings:

Ugh why do my favourite shows always die painful, new-showrunner-related deaths ugh
dw :: ten :: and i'll come running back

still pressed about freema

IN AN ODD TWIST OF FATE I actually listened to Frances' TV taste for once, so me, Hannah and Tay have been catching up on that short-lived Survivors show the BBC made a few years ago. We're only on episode two so ON THE OFF CHANCE ANYONE ELSE HAS SEEN IT plz do not spoil me, I know nothing beyond 1x02.

Anyway we all really enjoyed episode 2 (1x01 tbf gets off to a slow start) but this was the most exciting thing:

LOOK AT THAT MAGAZINE BEHIND HIM. COULD IT BE? IT IS:

trip overview + doctor faustus review

So, the short version is that my trip was amazing and I desperately wish I had a TARDIS and could constantly revisit that particular two-week period over and over in a Moffat-style disregarding of timelines and universal laws. Now I am back in Canada and pretty sick and my sunburn is peeling and I am a hot mess who is significantly poorer than she was a couple weeks ago, but I REGRET NOTHING.

I arrived in Heathrow on the Thursday morning and met up with shinyopals and together we took the longest bus in the universe back to her city. Frances joined us in London the following Tuesday, and then on Thursday we met up with starlightmoonla and lorelaisquared and the five of us spent most of the rest of our time together. It was awesome, the bigger group meant lots of fun and lots of sub-groups splitting off.

Collapse )

I think that's about it for established events at like... particular tourist places. Obviously we also did things like "eat at pubs" and "walk around" and "have a picnic" and "watch Fright Night" that were a lot of fun. There was also that time I got my book signed, and that time a guy walked past me on the street and I nearly died of heart palpitations.

You may have noticed that I have barely mentioned Much Ado About Nothing in this post! That is because it is getting its own long-winded post. Get ready. In other theatre news, we also saw Mamma Mia (fun, but I was sitting next to two small children who fidgeted and were incredibly irritating the whole time) and Collapse )

Okay, this is already super long. See why Much Ado needs its own post?
eng :: is that not strange?

GUYS SHE HELD MY BOOK IN HER HANDS

I started writing a longer post but I'm borrowing lorelaisquared's computer so I will cut to the part that everyone here might actually care about: on Thursday we did the Doctor Who Experience and I took a billion pictures and then, and more importantly, we went to the stage door at Wyndhams. There were lots of people there and poor shinyopals and goldy_dollar were too short to push through but I am large and have long arms:

LOOK

IT IS CATHERINE TATE SIGNING A MY SCRIPT

THEN I SAID "THANK YOU" AND SHE SAID SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF "OH NO PROBLEM" AND I PROMPTLY SAID "I LOVE YOU" (LIRL)

TBH I am not actually 100% sure she is signing my script in this picture but she is signing a script in front of me and I have a picture of it so I'm just going to pretend. I got both their signatures! I did not tell David Tennant that I loved him which is probably for the best. I will probably post the billion photos I took at some point but I don't want to hog lorelaisquared's computer any longer. BUT I HAD TO SHARE.

Clearly it has been too long since I posted about Doctor Who...

...so here is some stuff:

I. This art (featuring Nine, Rose, Ten, Martha, Donna, Eleven, Amy, and Rory) is totally adorable. LOOKIT 'EM ALL IN ONE PLACE. I love the different ways they're ~connected~ too, very appropriate. Anyway A+ all around.

II. I see series 6 promo stuff is starting to gear up. Collapse )

III. Thirdly, we watched the Library episodes in our rewatch recently. It's the first time I've seen them since I started liking River, and I can safely say now that while I am no longer butthurt about it and the episodes are a bit improved by not thinking River is the worst, I still find the actual plot a hot mess full of frustrating resolutions. AND SAVED/SAFE WILL NEVER MAKE SENSE TO ME AS A REVEAL EVERRrr. And I hope when Amy finds out about all this she punches the Doctor in the nads tbh.

IV. During the great LJ downtime I started writing a list of my top 10 non-RTD episodes, which is actually yielding sort of surprising results. So that should be up... whenever I get around to finishing it and finding some graphics. There's actually an even split between Moffat Who and RTD Who episodes! I guess when it comes down to it all my favourite RTD Who episodes are by RTD himself, whereas... only one of the Moffat Who episodes is actually by Moffat. Hmmm. It's sort of fun to share my love for some of the episodes I don't talk about as much, though.

V. Doctor Who related: I am dragging shinyopals and goldy_dollar with me to see Doctor Faustus on the 4th of September, adding yet another layer of Doctor Who to our trip. Whee! I am not actually very familiar with the play itself, but seeing a 16th century play performed at the Globe starring a Doctor Who actor gives me a lot of nerd bingo points, so.

VI. Wow look at all these bullet points. I GUESS I DO STILL HAVE A LOT TO SAY. Here's a gif for your time:
act :: kgill :: it's me!

montreal again! and some other stuff

I. I am back from Montreal! I spent the weekend with goldy_dollar and we went to ~the planetarium~ because we're 5 year olds and then we saw a Just for Laughs thing with kazutakia. The comedian we saw was a woman named DeAnne Smith and she was actually quite hysterical, which was awesome since with smaller-named comedians it can be hit or miss. She's got a YouTube channel which I haven't fully perused yet but the set she did on Saturday was very funny. Anyway, I haven't had my laptop with me for the last couple days so I'm behind on The Internets and stuff, let me know if I missed anything particularly important.

II. So there's a new Doctor Who trailer that I cannot embed because YouTube won't let you embed anything anymore even though embedding was like 75% of what YouTube had going for it. Collapse )

III. Speaking of, today is the 24th which means I leave in a month! That is exciting but means there are also lots of things I need to start doing in preparation. Like... buying shoes that are actually comfortable for extended periods of time. Hmmm.

IV. Also, we watched Torchwood on Saturday. I don't remember that much so I don't have much to say except Collapse )

V. Lastly, in lieu of bringing my computer I brought A Clash of Kings so now I'm on page 150 which is nothing because this book is monstrous. Collapse )
dw :: ten :: aloha

jealous of my icon tbh

I. I am home! I am sure you all missed me in my three-day absence. The cottage was lovely and I am not excited to be back at work in the city where it is very hot and, strangely, even more buggy, but on the bright side I had a shower this morning. I also managed to swallow not one but TWO bugs when Frances and I went swimming at night. It was like they were on some kind of crazy suicide mission. There were lots of fireflies as well which was neat because lol evolution, what even.

II. Harry Potter on Friday! I don't love the movies that much, but I still quite like going to see them, if only because it is fun and it is the closest I get to engaging in fandom with most of my ~real life~ friends. We've gone to see them all together since Goblet of Fire, so it has become something of a tradition. I have seen almost no promo material because I find the WB puts out way more than it should and the clips/etc leave me feeling like I've seen everything. So yeah, I am one of those people who avoids "movie spoilers". Dealwithit.gif

III. A week or two ago on Amazon I found all the Doctor Who ~storybooks~ for $0.01 and, being curious, bought them, because I figured the lulz they could provide would outweigh the $0.01 fee. I opened the solo-Ten book to a random page just now and found this excerpt which suggests I am not wrong:

He was always making promises - to get people home, to chase the monsters away, to save the world. He knew deep down he shouldn't, that one day he might make a promise he couldn't keep.

The Doctor felt an emotion he wasn't at all familiar with: despair.
-The Shape on the Chair by Matt Jones

LOL YES. THIS IS DEFINITELY A MAN WHO HAS NEVER FELT DESPAIR:

So that promises to be hilarious. Given how much I love summarizing terrible things, if these stories are EVERYTHING I HOPE FOR AND MORE I might make some posts about them. Would people find that amusing? I will ofc infuse them all with my natural wit and charm. ...Plus I get bored at work.

this post is shorter than i anticipated

I am up at goldy_dollar's cottage for the weekend! Last night we drove through a crazy storm which seemed to last forever, but the weather here today was really nice -- nice enough that I am now quite burnt in various places. HURRAH. Most of my body sees the sun about once a year so I hope it enjoys this brief dose of vitamin D even if it means sunburns.

We also just watched Torchwood. I HEARD A REAL ACTUAL RADIO COMMERCIAL FOR IT IN THE CAR GUYS. Collapse )
