I was all like 'hmm, maybe I should do that meme I've done every year at New Year's!" And I went to my old entries to find it and LOL apparently I didn't do it last year after all. Oops? But here it is anyway.Collapse )

Well that was fun.

When I was looking through last year's post to try and find this meme, I saw that my New Year's Eve post included a video of polar bears narrated by David Tennant. This year I bring you AMAZING STINGRAYS:

10/10 for the one that does a perfect backflip.
First, a comment of utmost importance directed in the general direction of Tumblr but also fandom at large:

Donna Noble is totally a Hufflepuff, guys. Red hair does not automatically put you in Gryffindor. Donna is brave when necessary because that is a basic requirement of all companions, but she does not get off on danger and excitement like Rose Tyler or Amy Pond. Donna would rather sunbathe by the pool than go see a stupid waterfall. Plz adjust all Sorting picspams accordingly, ty.

And before you ask the answer is YES this is very srs bsnss.

Second, I'm still doing the top 5 meme, but in the meantime, I decided to do the ship meme floating around the internet:

1. Think of up to 20 ships you support.
2. List them using descriptions of the characters involved rather than their names.
3. Have your f-list guess as many of the ships as they can.

I also tried to make it hard. I'm not screening comments or anything so just use the honour system you guys~.

GOOD LUCK.Collapse )

turtle_goose asked for my top 5 ways to fix series 6. "CHANGE EVERYTHING" didn't seem like a good answer, so I tried to work within the constraints of the basic plot outline of this season. Obviously this is really a top 5 ways to tweak series 6 to my liking.

Top 5 Ways I Would Fix Series 6.Collapse )
I. One of the funniest texts I have ever received:
Actually Im pretty wasted but that doesnt make u less beautiful

II. I feel like the existence of Tumblr results in far fewer people making pretty icons these days. I can see why, I guess, if you made graphics it might be more rewarding to get a zillion notes on a gif than half a dozen comments on eigthty icons. BUT WHERE ARE MY INSPECTOR SPACETIME ICONS, INTERNET? Conform to my needs!

III. Tay, Hannah and I learned that Eccleston's character in GI Joe is Scottish and decided to investigate immediately. Some kind person had compiled all his scenes so we only had to watch 14 minutes of GI Joe and not 2 hours, which was worth it tbh.

IV. INTERNET, YOU SO BORING ON SUNDAYS. I guess there is Misfits later. Not sure how I feel about this season, although referring to the two Rudys as Ten and Eleven is providing me entertainment.

V. Frances told me to do the top 5 meme so I am doing it:

Give me a list of fandomy top 5 things to do, you know, top 5 episodes or whatever you've all done this meme before and I am just making up the description right now on the fly.

VI. This post is boring, so have a gif:

I. I saw two plays in the last two days! Sometimes I watch things even though there are no Doctor Who cast in it, I swear. The first was a romcom called Salt Water Moon and is by some "famous" Canadian playwright. I guess I shouldn't put quotations around famous, given that I can name like, 3 playwrights and two of them have been dead for like four hundred years, so maybe he is famous I guess. Anyway, it was a two-person show about two Newfoundlanders in love~ in the 1920s. They both tried to do the Newfoundland accent, which LOL. It started off slow but I got into it as it picked up. At one point the guy is attempting to make the girl jealous by boasting about all the girls he's dated since her, and she doesn't believe him and is all "PFT YEAH RIGHT WHAT ARE THERE NAMES?" and he's like "HER NAME WAS ROSE" and I loled louder than anyone else and for different reasons.

The second was ~the Scottish Play~ at the other university in town. It was... what you would expect from a college Shakespeare production, with varying degrees of talent within the cast. Macbeth himself was easily the best (and pretty attractive ngl). Lady Macbeth was decent. MacDuff was pretty good. Everyone else... lol. Essentially there was a lot more laughing than one can usually expect from a performance of Macbeth. On the bright side, none of them tried Scottish accents, which I am counting as a win.

II. The friend I saw Macbeth with is one of my few non-internet friends who watches Doctor Who, and hanging out with her is always great because she validates my fandom opinions even though she's not in fandom. We had an animated discussion over dinner about how nonsensical 6x13 was, probably to the wonderment of everyone else at the Quiznos.

III. One-line spoiler for Community last night.Collapse )

IV. I have to write a children's story for my Children's Lit class. On one hand this is exciting, because it'll be the most creative writing I've ever done for my university degree. On the other hand, jfc I can barely write fic anymore, let alone something original, so AHHHHHHHH. I keep waiting for some kind of magical inspiration to strike. It has not.

I miss writing, though. SO I AM GOING TO DO ONE OF THOSE PROMPT MEMES. Except that like I don't actually know any so I'm just going to make some up. Isn't one of them, like, give me the title of a fic and the pairings/characters and I will write a sample of it? SURE, TRY THAT. Or just give me a standard prompt or quote or whatever IDK, just try and give me ideas and I will try and write something. You all know what I am and am not likely to write so no Michelle this will probably not be the day you convince me to write Ianto/Sherlock.

V. Lastly, ALL THAT SOCIALIZING + a Halloween party tomorrow means I'm probably just going to sit home tonight and watch TV. Fuck yeah. On my list are Midnight and Waters of Mars so if anyone wants in on that action let me know.

Anyway, have a gif from the best deleted scene ever:

lol Ten and Martha

Class starts in a few minutes and then I have a three hour gap later so here, give me meme questions to answer:

Give me a fandom and I will tell you:

+ Favourite female and male character
+ Favourite scene
+ Favourite ship
+ Unpopular opinion

LJ ARE YOU WORKING? omg never leave me again. Out of boredom I was driven to the bitter arms of Tumblr and it is not the same. So many people being wrong, so little ability to have an actual discussion. Basically time I spend on Tumblr is like

Step 1: Search for a more generic tag like 'doctor who'
Step 2: "Like" a couple graphics that I will never be able to do anything with but which are pretty
Step 3: Encounter wrong opinions
Step 4: Become filled with futile, impotent rage
Step 5: Flounce to a more specific character and/or actor tag
Step 6: Repeat Step 2
Step 7: Encounter something somehow relating to Much Ado About Nothing
Step 8: Brain temporarily overloads on !!!!!!!!!!!
Step 9: Repeat steps 1-8

Anyway, I have some things I might want to post about later when I am more confident in lj's abilities, mostly boring-to-anyone-but-me trip stuff because I leave innnn 29 days now! It's possible I've started a post-it note countdown at work.

In the meantime though, I'm doing that meme floating around where I post quotes from 13 things I ship and YOU GET TO GUESS what they are. Everyone loves guessing games, right? Because I am not much of a shipper I am using the word "ship" rather loosely. I'm not going to screen comments so uh honour system u guise.

It's possible I intentionally tried to choose some non-obvious quotes.Collapse )
I. I spent Canada Day with sweetcherrytree! Finally! The world did not implode in a paradox so possibly we have Steven Moffat to thank. Canada Day in Quebec is hilarious to me, because being both Ontarian and from the nation's capital I am used to UNENDING PATRIOTISM and a SEA OF RED AND WHITE but lol that is not how Quebec rolls. There were lots of bouncy castles for children (PRINCESS PALACE for girls and CREEPY MEAN DOG THING for boys, thanks world) and someone gave me a little paper flag and then Kelly and I celebrated with a Canada Day nap because it was hot as balls. There was this one point when we were waiting for the fireworks when the DJ was having technical difficulty and to pass the time he was like LET'S SING O CANADA!! and the crowd made it through one line before abandoning ship.

Kelly also provided me a Snuggie to sleep in which lol is the first time I have used a Snuggie. They are hilarious. It is like you are a sleepy wizard.

II. At Kelly's I also saw the first four episodes of Game of Thrones, and since I've come home I've caught up to episode 6. I'll probably make a more complete post when I finish the season but here are some basic thoughts. Spoilers up to 1x06, plz do not tell me anything beyond that.Collapse )

III. Lastly, more meme: Top 5 BromancesCollapse )
I. Since someone on my flist might know: David Tennant reading The Philosopher's Stone -- why does this exist and where can I find more?

II. Hmm, tbh there is not much to update about my life recently. Mostly I have been going to work and occasionally getting into wank at doctorwho and then sending links to placebetween. So here are some more top 5s:

fauxkaren wanted my Top 5 Female CharactersCollapse )

And on an equally srs note, firstofoct wanted Top 5 Doctor Who Episodes in terms of how attractive Ten isCollapse )
I. So I've been rewatching s1 with firstofoct right? And sometimes spud14. We just finished Aliens of London/WW3 last night. Oh, show. I forgot how genuinely adorable and friendly Rose is! I mean, not forgot, but... idk, it sure is different from how the show is these days. And Nine! I always forget how much I like Nine until I actually sit down and watch some Nine. You can tell the show hasn't really found its tone or style yet and Mickey and Jackie are just starting to be fleshed out, but d'aww. Also, lol forever @ the CGI. So great. What's with the music, though? With some exceptions -- for example, O HAI, Doomsday song in "Rose" -- the episode action-y music is like, awful. I think I've heard that they didn't start using an actual orchestra until maybe s2? I guess that could be part of it. But right now I am loling a bit. Murray Gold, you can do better.

II. Another top 5 for all of you! goldy_dollar asked for Top five times Billie Piper cried so well that you wanted to rip out your own heart and stamp on it.

I hope you appreciate that these are not all from Doctor Who. That made it a challenge.Collapse )
Soooo that hypothetical ficathon I mentioned?

Meanwhile, here are some answers from that top 5 meme.

fauxkaren asked for my Top 5 TV Shows of All Time. Spoilers: this list contains no Firefly, Buffy, X-Files or LOST.Collapse )

bluetooth16 asked for Top 5 Torchwood Fuck-ups!Collapse )
Yelling at poor Opal about Jeff/Annie even though she does not watch Community brought it to my attention that although it's rare for me to get very invested in a ship I usually have plenty of totally important opinions on them, so:

Comment with any ship (romantic or platonic or maybe even non-existent!) from a fandom that you know I have some knowledge about, and I will rant about aforementioned ship. This may be incoherent gushing or exclamations of disgust, depending on your ship of choice.

Because clearly my opinions are important! Also, it gives me something to do when I have downtime at work.
28 February 2011 @ 07:04 pm
I am back at school ugh. I am pretty sure I had something else to say but now I cannot remember it so time for that icon meme!Collapse )

Anyway, I guess if you want me to pick six of yours you can comment and I will.

Also, what's this I hear about series 6 not starting until Easter? EASTER IS LIKE THE 24TH OF APRIL OR WHATEVER. Ugh BBC. Why are you the way that you are. How am I supposed to spend the rest of my April? STUDYING FOR EXAMS? Pshhhh.

ETA: OH I remember what I was going to post. I was going to promote d_r_meta, a ~shiny new discussion comm centered around (duh) Doctor/Rose with weekly discussion points etc. Your mods are myself, firstofoct, shinyopals, mrv3000 and fauxkaren. So if you like Doctor/Rose and also like telling the internet how right you are, you should go join.
31 December 2010 @ 04:49 pm
So 2010 is almost over! I ...can't decide if I liked it or not. I'll have to think on it. I spent last night watching Lost in Austen with my friends, and while I was pretty severely unimpressed with it I did enjoy playing a good round of Doctor Who Bingo. (River Song, Adelaide Brooke, Tish Jones and Nancy from TEC/TDD ftw!) To the ending, though, I say, "LOL R U SRS". Frankly I think the show should've followed Lizzie Bennet, because she was obviously having a grand old time.

I'm going to do that fic meme everyone else has done. First, my surprisingly short 2010 masterlist.Collapse )

And the meme.Collapse )

Anyway, hope you have a good new year's eve, whatever you're doing. Here is an adorable video someone posted on Facebook with bonus surprise lulz:

Stolen from basically everyone at this point, the ~2010 fandom meme~

1. Your main fandom of the year: Doctor Who. SURPRISE.

2. Your favorite film this year: Toy Story 3, tbqh. Everything else I basically just moderately enjoyed. Toy Story 3 made me cry like three times.

3. Your favorite book this year: Ummm the Pullman books, I don't know which one in particular. Pullman is sort of an interesting writer and I think I enjoyed his stuff more now than I would have as a kid, I think I would have found it boring as a kid. But as a ~scholar of English literature~ I enjoyed the ideas/etc. I liked Tiger in the Well a lot even if it was OOTP-levels of frustrating to read. HDM was good too.

4. Your favorite album or song this year: The "Lungs" album by Florence + the Machine. Pretty much every song on there was my favourite song for a portion of this year. Right now I am rocking out to Howl.

I bet it is on a billion Rose Tyler fanmixes and if it is not it should be.

5. Your favorite TV show this year: Well this kind of goes along with my favourite fandom, doesn't it. But in terms of shows I ~discovered~ this year hmmm, probably Community. It is like a comedy tailor-made for me! I also really liked Secret Diary and Misfits, though. So 3/4 for you, Britain.

6. Your favorite LJ community this year: Is it bad to just say a bunch of comms I mod? OH WELL. starwhales is fab.

7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year: lol I don't even know what this means. I didn't really... discover a new fandom? I... am glad I started watching Community/Secret Diary/Misfits?

8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year: Omg both HIMYM and The Office were so bad at the beginning of this year/the end of their last season. They've both sort of picked themselves up again in the subsequent seasons, but still. Turning away in shame.

9. Your TV boyfriend of the year:

10. Your TV girlfriend of the year: I guess this is supposed to be a character from 2010 eh? Or from a show I watched in 2010? W/e I will go with Hannah Baxter. She is self-described as not a very good girlfriend but I am sure we can work something out.

When does this show come back? That must be soon right? Yess.

11. Your biggest squee moment of the year: LOL probably watching EOT on New Year's. That totally counts for all of 2010 okay.

12. Your most missed old fandom: lol I only have one old fandom. BUT I was feeling pretty nostalgic for Harry Potter this summer, while reading MRHP. I reread Deathly Hallows and read a Lily/James fic yesterday and everything. My love for Harry Potter is ancient and forever.

13. Your fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to? I am not really eying any fandom with interest. I am waiting for Katniss Everdeen to be cast so I can nom popcorn gifs and watch the wank like I did back in the day with Robert Pattinson? I might watch the rest of Vampire Diaries so I know what everyone is talking about but I sense it will be another Merlin for me. I have also given passing consideration to Being Human anddd... I'm pretty sure there was another show but it's since slipped my mind.

14. Your biggest anticipation of the New Year: I am always excited for more Doctor Who. Also Secret Diary (though omg no Bambi, crying forever) and I guess Misfits when it finally returns in a year f u Britain.

WELL that was fun.
11 December 2010 @ 12:26 am
I. SO... I have a thread at the Holiday Love Meme. If I remember correctly I did this last year and it was cute/fun, so I am doing it again. I've also been lurking through the pages to see if there's anyone else I know. Do it! Everyone likes having anonymous people say nice things and Christmas is a good excuse for narcissism.

II. I just finished watching the Christmas episode of The Office and I thought it was great. This season has been so much better than the previous two, probably because the writers have some sense of purpose again, and it's so sad that the show is going to continue beyond this season in order to slowly dissolve into flames, just like Scrubs and That 70s Show and every other comedy that has foolishly believed it could survive after the lead actor wants out. It's too bad because then you leave the long-term fans with a lasting impression of "wtf?" when you could have gone out with ~dignity~. Britain, I make fun of your hilarious tv schedules all the time, but at least you usually seem to sense when enough is enough.

III. I also watched Misfits. Spoilers for 2x05Collapse )

IV. Omg, we got my dog's hair clipped for the first time in his life. My mom did not tell me she was doing this today, because she wanted to surprise me I guess, and so some stranger-dog came to greet me when I got home from work, wearing a bandana. It is SO WEIRD. There was a second or so when I considered the possibility that some other dog was in my house (this is not unheard of). It is literally like some mysterious other dog has replaced ours and is just living in our house for some reason. I'll post a before/after picture once I get some.

He looks very poodley now, whereas before he was just kind of a big mop of hair. I actually think it makes him look cleverer, but maybe that's just because I associate poodles with being smart and mops with being mops.
16 November 2010 @ 07:29 pm
I. Just watched last night's HIMYM, I will cut for spoilers I guess.Collapse )

II. So a Radio Times poll named Rose as the most popular companion. That sound you hear is a thousand fanboys crying, but basically:

Naturally the first comment on the doctorwho post was "IF ROSE WON I'LL PUNCH MYSELF IN THE FACE". Hahahaha. W/e, haters gonna hate, etc. The remaining top 5 were Sarah Jane, Donna, K-9 (wtf) and Amy, in that order. Martha Jones was 11th which I find upsetting, though replace K-9 with Martha and the top 5 is good by me. Full results (all 40-something) are here if anyone cares and hasn't seen it yet.

III. Speaking of Amy Pond, Karen Gillan is going to be in some hilarious Shakespeare teen movie with some guy from Misfits and Dana Scully:

The actress has been cast as a New Jersey high-schooler who gets sent back in time to 13th century Verona and finds herself trapped in Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet.

Gillian Anderson will play Gillan's mother and a nurse in Verona, while Misfits actor Robert Sheehan is the school nerd who becomes Brittney's Romeo.

NGL my primary questions right now are a) does that mean she is done after s6? and b) but how does her accent compare to David Tennant's? shinyopals, clearly the time is ripe for our movie.

I will say though that I always sort of laugh when people are morally outraged by Shakespeare adaptations like this. I'm not saying this movie is necessarily going to be any good, but if he is rolling in his grave it is with laughter and not outrage.

IV. Aaaand rounding things off with a meme:

Give me a character/pairing from a fandom and I'll tell you
* why I love them
* my favourite moment
* my favourite quote
* my select song for this character/pairing (lol pre-emptively reserving the right to skip this one)
* my head canon for this character/pairing
04 November 2010 @ 07:41 pm
On Tuesday my friend and I went to a book signing with Sara Gruen. If you are saying "who is Sara Gruen", you have exactly the reaction I had when my friend asked me to go. Her most famous book is Water for Elephants, which I have heard of but never read. I went anyway, and it was the first book signing I've been to, and it was sort of neat I guess. She was there promoting her new book Ape House, which I bought to get signed without knowing anything about it. She seemed like a nice lady, and she gave one fan a hug which was cute, but her pitch for the book went something like this:

AUTHOR: WELL It is all inspired by this research facility in Somewhere USA, which is testing the linguistic capabilities of bonobo apes, and I had to take some linguistics courses at York University and everything before they let me go and it was really fascinating blah blah

AUTHOR: It also explores the crazy way our society treats celebrities, especially those famous for nothing other than being famous.

AUTHOR: Anyway in the book the talking apes get a reality tv show.

So... we'll see how that goes. David Sedaris is coming here in a couple weeks though and I would like to go to that, since I have... read his books and everything.

Anyway, here's that WIP meme. I am using the phrase "in progress" loosely, and one of them (surprise!) is a collab with goldy_dollar.

Post a line/snippet from every work in progress you have going.Collapse )
