alec hardy, human disaster

More rationally, I am still of the opinion the script for this thing is most likely going to suck. But there are some things that Steven Moffat's writing cannot take from me, and set photos like this are one of them, so I am going to revel in it. Gimme a couple nice ones of Billie to work with too, ty. (If you were wondering, other things on the list: Murray Gold music and press rounds. People I love complimenting each other! While I vomit rainbows!)

In slightly different news, is anyone on this side of the internet watching Broadchurch? Frances accused me of liking it merely because David Tennant is in it, but let me tell you, I have watched many a thing because David Tennant is in it, and that is really not a guarantee of my praise. Also, Broadchurch is by Chibnall, so admitting I am loving it means admitting Chris Chibnall wrote something good, and I think you can all appreciate what an effort that is for me.

But it is good! I got super into it! It's a nice balance of decent drama and total hilarity (unintentional most of the time) that keeps me entertained through every episode, which is basically all I want from TV. I really love Ellie, feel quite awful for Beth, and for once I am actually super fond of David Tennant's character, even if (naturally) I express that fondness with sheer unadulterated mockery.

Anyway consider this long endorsement my way of saying that if you were considering watching it but unsure, go for it. And if you are watching, come talk to me. Theories! Thoughts! etc!

IT WAS TOTALLY ELLIE'S HUSBAND, WHICH IS TERRIBLE BECAUSE I LOVE ELLIE. For like the past seven weeks people on Tumblr have been mixing up Ellie's husband (Joe?) and Nige, because they are both bald, and I found it hilarious that no one could tell bald guys apart, but now in the biggest plot twist of all I think Tumblr's incompetence might actually be a clue? Susan thinks she saw Nige because from the distance she saw some tall skinny bald white guy, and she'd be thinking of Nige already anyway -- but that describes Joe too. And if they're similar builds they probably have the same shoe size anyway. Also all the stuff about Susan’s ex, and Ellie being all “how could you not know?” is anvil-sized hints. If we assume Paul is telling the truth when he says he told the parents about the Danny/Tom fight,it might be that he spoke to Joe who never passed on the message to Ellie. (Or she could be lying. She didn’t seem like she was lying but she did say to Susan she’d do whatever to protect her son, so…)

I saw some people saying other things like — if it was Ellie’s husband that she and Hardy were chasing that one night, it might make sense that she got a phone call conveniently; he’d know her number and could use it to locate/distract her. And the texts Tom deletes, some of them are from “Mom” just around the time Danny was killed — so maybe Joe was using her phone.

Anyway if this is all true EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE because Ellie is so lovely and now she will be even sadder than Alec Hardy.

...who is, like, comically miserable, btw. Every time they demonstrate his utter lack of understanding human society I just die laughing. "Do you want to ...relax.... with me....", "I have no idea what to bring to a dinner party so I bought everything in the convenience store", "here's 5 quid go buy a round", et cetera. Dude, who ARE you? Some friends and I were playing "guess the tragic backstory" the whole time and then what they delivered is more hilarious than anything we could've imagined lmao. Of course this miserable sod is actually not guilty of anything at all beyond an unreasonable desire to martyr himself, of course. Ugh it's so funny. Somewhere under all the hilarity I do feel bad for him and just want to, like, sit him down and feed him some heart healthy soup, but there's a lot of hilarity on top, which is my favourite combination. Too bad he's totally going to die on Monday.

Alec Hardy is the best omg. I am SO PUT OUT he is going to die. WHY. WHY COULD I NOT HAVE ONE DAVID TENNANT CHARACTER WHO I LIKED WHO DID NOT DIE ON MY SCREEN. I guess I'm left with... Peter Vincent? XD

and lol omg he is so cute in that suit WHYYYYYYY must everything torment me?

lmfao IKR, fucking Peter Carlisle strolls into the sunset and Doctor Who crossover fiction but poor miserable Hardy is going to kill himself over penance for something he didn't even actually do.

Next week I'll do a reaction post for the last episode of Broachurch on the doctorwho comm, IDC if I'm the only one there.
Totally agree about the Ellie's husband, that's what I'd been thinking while watching this episode. He's become increasingly suspicious with each episode, like in the scene in the skatepark where he's all "when are you going to interrogate me, then? lol!". I also desperately hope it's a red herring, pointing the evidence in the direction of Ellie's family so she has a crisis moment when she's lost all trust in everything before everything turns out not to be that bad, but I doubt it. To be fair to Chibnall, if Ellie's husband is the murderer it hasn't been badly seeded and most people would never have guessed it, just us obsessives.
I'm not sure Hardy will die, as he still has unfinished business with Sandbrook. If somehow both cases get resolved in the finale then he can die happy at least, his job done and his name cleared. Then, if they want to continue the series, they can do it in the vein of Randall and Hopkirk (diseased). I'd watch the hell out of ghost Hardy and Ellie solving cases. And you thought he was a grumpy sod when he was alive!
Someone in the doctorwho comm wonders if something happened in that paintballing trip that is the key to all of it. Ollie was on that trip as well, right?

With only one episode left to wrap up I'm not sure how they'll do it, honestly. I mean lol if it WAS Joe, Ellie is going to be DESTROYED FOR LIFE and that's terrible.

To be fair to Chibnall, if Ellie's husband is the murderer it hasn't been badly seeded and most people would never have guessed it, just us obsessives.

Yeah IA, I was thinking of making a kind of musing post on the idea of plot twists and the difference between a good plot twist and something so out of left field no one could possibly ever have seen it coming (aka a bad plot twist). I've seen people say it can't be Ellie's husband now because he's "too predictable", but he's really not predictable unless you're obsessively discussing every episode, and the idea that a plot twist shouldn't be at ALL forseeable if you're paying attention is misguided. You should be able to rewatch something afterwards, knowing the twist, and see all the bits that led up to it. Just because the audience is on the ball doesn't necessarily mean the twist was bad.

I've seen Chibnall be asked about a series 2 and he said it was really structured as a one-off for reasons that become obvious or something, which leads me to think Hardy will definitely die lol. And maybe Ellie will be destroyed with grief and quit. lol I dunno -- on one hand it seems clear to me that Ellie is developing into an excellent DI protege, ready to step up when her boss kicks it, but on the other hand if someone in her family is involved I can't imagine she'd want to stay in that town or that career.

I would watch the hell out of an s2 with Ellie and Hardy, Reluctant Bros though!
ibishtar: Doctor Whoibishtar on April 18th, 2013 05:41 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I understand wanting to be surprised up to the very end rather than going into the last episode knowing how it's going to play out, but it doesn't mean that was a bad twist. And if the last episode features Hardy knowing for sure it's him from the start and focusses instead on the drama of it rather than stretching out the moment of whodunnit, then it won't matter that we've already guessed it.
If it is him, I suppose Ellie will leave Broadchurch and be able to continue her career elsewhere. Maybe Hardy can ask her before he dies to take on the Sandbrooke case after he's gone. So he dies with some sense of hope and she has a purpose and a job to do even if her family has been wrecked.

I just don't know where you go as a detective if you find out your husband murdered a child lol -- poor Ellie. I want to be right, but I also don't want her life to be destroyed like it will be if I am.

The thing about Sandbrooke, I know he says the case is still open and stuff but -- surely if the case fell apart in trial you can't go after that same suspect again, can you? You can only be tried for a crime once, right? And the evidence they lost was their smoking gun, so they know they had the right guy, they just couldn't nail him.

I am not an expert in law specifically British law so IDK, but that is what I always thought.
ibishtar: Doctor Who nothing changesibishtar on April 18th, 2013 05:58 pm (UTC)
I'm not an expert either. I saw a BBC drama where a character was sentenced as guilty, but was later let off when new evidence appeared, so maybe the opposite can happen too? But it's just me wanting a silver lining, when the ending could be much messier than that.
Best to focus on happier things like the hilarity of Alec Hardy's commitment to hating everything in his life starting from his name.

It's funny to me -- most of the people who were really excited when his involvement was announced two weeks ago are now in a rage because of x/y/z things that have happened since filming started, and meanwhile I started with the lowest of low expectations and now I'm like TENNNNNNNNNN YOU CAME BAAAAAAAAACK
Pied: thinking tenwheatear on April 18th, 2013 08:10 pm (UTC)
It's all I want really. Also, I think it's usually fairly pointless to get in a rage about set pictures or whatever because they're not representative of what we're going to see on screen.
Kali: dw :: ten/rose :: worst day of my life_thirty2flavors on April 18th, 2013 08:15 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that too. And while i'd like to see a photo of Billie on set/in costume, the panic over her absence on what has amounted to 2 days of filming is pretty funny to me. I want her to show up just to abate everyone's panic a bit.

Too bad he's totally going to die on Monday.

Noooooooooo. Don't say that. HE'S GOING TO BE FINE!!!!

Yeah, I think tumblr has me convinced that Joe MIller is the culprit. But everyone in this town is so suspicious. Even though I feel sorta bad for Susan now that I know her backstory, she's still one of the skeeviest people in town. I mean, she threatened that newspaper lady with rape!

I am really enjoying Arthur Darvill's performance. It's like ... Rory became a priest and moved to a small town. He's adorable.

Ugh, on Monday, when I get home from work, it is going to be such a struggle to keep off Tumblr until I can find a streaming link.
Kali: eng :: words words words_thirty2flavors on April 18th, 2013 08:11 pm (UTC)
lmao Hardy living would be genuinely surprising I must say. I've just kind of resigned myself to his death because I actually like him and it seems like whenever I actually like one of David Tennant's characters they die a miserable death.

Omfg IKR Susan is a skeezeball, I was proud of the reporter for setting her up. And yeah EVERYONE IN THIS TOWN IS SHADY. Whether or not Joe killed Danny himself or just moved the body, Ellie's family is sketchy as fuck which is sad because she's so nice.

lol Arthur Darvill is so Rory-like, it makes me laugh that people on Tumblr are getting mad at other people calling him "Rory" instead of Paul.

I watch Broadchurch wiht Hannah and she is always working until like midnight on Mondays which is DEEPLY ANNOYING damnit Hannah. I too have to avoid Tumblr.
captaintish: Dr. Who -- 10th Doctor - hat and leicaptaintish on April 18th, 2013 08:42 pm (UTC)
Poor Alec. I just want him to be reunited with his daughter, and then they can live happily ever after. THAT IS ALL I ASK. :D

That reporter is awesome. It was like she turned around and there were Hardy and Miller!

And yeah, poor Ellie. She seemed to have such a happy family. But her son is totally creepy, and her husband's probably a killer, so.... If Alec lived, at least she could have him for a friend, and they could be miserable together. IDK.

Paul is so Rory. I love him. I hope he's innocent.

LOL, so do you watch it in the wee hours of the morning or do you wait till the next day? I've actually been watching kind of sporadically. The week episode 5 aired I watched Eps 1-4. Then this week, I watched Eps 5-7. But I know next week, I'm going to have to watch it ASAP. How bout -- if you find a streaming link, you send it to me and vice versa?
Kali: dw :: doctors :: someone for everybody_thirty2flavors on April 18th, 2013 09:15 pm (UTC)
Ikr! Girl call your father before he keels over dead. lol I just can't @ her presumably resenting him for an affair he didn't have and lost evidence he didn't lose, I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS BETTER THAN HER THINKING HER MOM DID THOSE THINGS U STUPID MARTYR why do you love misery

LOL ikr it would still be sad but I enjoy the Hardy/Ellie duo so much, I want them to be irritable friends forever.

We usually watch it in the morning. She has shift work and I am forever unemployed so staying up late isn't really an issue -- it's just annoying to have to try and dodge spoilers for several hours after it airs. And sure! I can try to remember anyway. Sometimes I just download, if that's what I find first.
captaintish: Dr. Who -- 11th Doctor -- cowboy hatcaptaintish on April 19th, 2013 03:59 am (UTC)

Right! It's like earlier on in the series, when Mark was lying about where he was the night of the murder, and it turns out he was having an affair with Hotel Lady, and he was worried about WHAT PEOPLE WOULD THINK. Like, really, it's better if everyone thinks you killed your son? What is wrong with people?

Kali_thirty2flavors on April 19th, 2013 04:41 am (UTC)
IKR fucking Mark what a bag of dicks. That's even worse. At least the Hardy situation kind of breaks even... lol.

I'm curious about the ex wife. Like -- lmao was she just fine with him taking the fall? Did she see the "WORST COP IN BRITAIN" headlines and feel like a dick?
