oh and happy halloween i guess
I see Livejournal is messing with stuff again. I haven't had the option to try the new friends page and I don't particularly want it, but I'm sure it'll be foisted on me soon. Along with ads, apparently? My paid account doesn't expire until next September, which is beyond the point they're apparently planning to "take away" paid accounts, so... I don't know. I do know most of my icon packages are expiring later this month, I think, and I haven't really decided what to do. On one hand, BUT I'VE SPENT SO LONG COLLECTING SO MANY NICE ICONS. On the other hand, my flist is a ghost town, it's only getting worse, and if LJ really is taking away paid features and all this other stuff I don't really know if I will need or want the privilege of 200+ jpgs on this site. I dunno. It's not like I have much disposable income with my ~funemployment~ right now.

Livejournal, you make me sad. I don't want you to die. I like to have discussions that aren't in reblog format. WHAT IF I EVER WRITE FIC AGAIN? WHERE WILL I POST IT? Boooooo.

In unrelated news, It was pretty cute/fun — definitely silly in a lot of places but since it’s aimed for pretty young kids, y’know … fine. Also Gwendoline Christie is in it, unexpectedly? SURRPISE.

I started writing this thinking I had more to say but I guess I don’t. Like I said, it was fun and cute for the most part. The spells in particular sound a bit ridiculous, but it’s for kids and also I’m probably just part of a generation that can’t accept any magic as real that isn’t Harry Potter magic. I thought the two leads were quite likable, especially Muggle friend Benny, who for example described the… magic… closet… cavern… as “like Narnia, Tim Burton style”. It seems like the relationships will have some heart to them.

My main complaint with it was that there needs to be more girl characters — Gwendoline Christie is a warrior alien lady and the main character has a lovable grandma who is also a witch, and there was a female student for like 2 seconds, but that’s about it so far, as compared to main dude, main dude’s bro, main dude’s father, warrior alien dude, alien king, hobgoblin and the other wizard/son duo (who were one-offs, but dudes nonetheless). It feels like something that would easily be branded a “boy show” — which of course does not mean girls can’t/wouldn’t watch it, but rather that you get the impression it’s little boys who are going to be the target audience and any little girls watching will be a bonus.

It was only the first story though, so that might change, I guess. Hopefully.

I never posted about last week's TV but I liked all of it especially Elementary which was fab and my favourite episode yet hooray.

Did anyone but me, Tay and Hannah bother watching the s4 premiere of Misfits? I have a lot of thoughts but I'm not sure I want to type them all out for an audience of 0. I thought it was pretty brutal. I knew it would be weird to adjust to a brand new cast, but I think I underestimated how keenly I would feel the loss of Kelly and maybe even Simon and Alisha. On one hand, I'm glad they fired Lauren Socha's racist ass. On the other hand, it's becoming readily apparent that Kelly was my favourite character and the show doesn't have the same intrigue for me without her. PS: lol @ her fixing landmines in Uganda.

Beyond that, I'm SO PRESSED that fucking SETH is still around. Write his boring ass out of this show omg I don't care that everyone wants to bone Matthew McNaulty GO WATCH THE SYNDICATE WHICH WAS ACTUALLY GOOD AND WHERE HE WAS ACTUALLY INTERESTING. I hated Seth last year for being as interesting as watching paint dry, and I'm ESPECIALLY pressed that he's still around now even with Kelly gone AND with poor Curtis, THE ONLY ORIGINAL CAST MEMBER, having about 2 lines. Why couldn't they reverse Curtis and Seth in this episode, so Seth spends most of it in the freezer? Ugh. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett is so ill-treated by this show, tbh.

Rudy, meanwhile, had some funny bits ("sweet or savory? it's man's eternal dilemma") but he's not enough to carry the show for me.

The two new kids were eh. I want to like the new girl, but I am super annoyed that she was THE ONLY DAMN WOMAN IN THE ENTIRETY OF THIS EPISODE, WTF?? Way too many dicks on this dancefloor. And her power is so boring and obviously was designed to be useful in this one singular episode to kickstart the plot. Meanwhile Finn has the COOLEST POWER (even if he sucks at it), but oh yeah HE'S A CRAZY RAPIST.

The plot was a mess also. I get that it was meant to be a bit of a riff on the unreliable-narrator type movie, but it didn't work super well and was just a bad idea for a premiere ep I think.

All in all I think I might give this show one more episode to bring me on board before I cut my losses. TBH I think it will depend a lot on how they deal with the Finn/Sadie stuff. If I am expected to sympathize with Finn keeping a woman tied up in his bedroom and raping her, we're done.

I don't really mind the new flist but I have a high bullshit tolerance I guess. although fuck infinite scroll.

the paid account thing is making me wtf a lot. OK I GUESS YOU DON'T WANT MY MONEY??? idk what to do because I don't want to give up on LJ but EVERYONE IS LEAVING IT.

They must figure they can make more from ad revenue than from paid accounts. But ugh I DON'T WANT ADS EVERYWHERE. I also don't want Tumblr 2.0. I HAVE A TUMBLR FOR WHEN I WANT TUMBLR.
Opalshinyopals on October 31st, 2012 06:26 pm (UTC)
yeah, ugh, it makes sense from a business perspective I guess, unless enough people actually follow through with their threats to leave. and like... MAYBE THIS TIME THEY WILL???

srsly, I want a blog format for talking to people with threaded comments and shit.

maybe I really will have to move to Dreamwidth.

I think they also just don't give a shit about their English speaking client base anymore, which is unfortunate for us to say the least.

Yeah. Tumblr really doesn't have the same capacity for discussion. At all.

I might go import stuff to Dreamwidth just in case, since the last time I did that was eons ago. Blah.

From what I hear, the Russian customers are none too happy with any of this, either. I just don't think they care anymore.

Orly? Interesting.

Yeah, the impression I get is that they really just want to be the next Facebook/Tumblr/etc. But... that's never going to happen, lol. They're just going to drive their old userbase further and further away.

Come to DW -- we have cookies. :)

Seriously, at this point, I think having it as a backup makes sense because you can save comments, etc.

I too was kind of disappointed that Wizards vs. Aliens looks to be such a sausage party. SJA was never that way so I was kind of surprised as well as disappointed.
Kali: dw :: ten :: all by myself_thirty2flavors on October 31st, 2012 06:44 pm (UTC)
I had seen the cast list and was expecting a bit of a sausagefest but it was still a bit overwhelming watching it. Women are almost never in equal number to dudes on this kind of show, but they were VASTLY outnumbered here and I really don't think it would've been that hard to turn the main two into a trio and have the token lead female.
captaintish on October 31st, 2012 08:32 pm (UTC)
I tried the new friends page for about two seconds and then switched back. I WILL HOLD ON TO THE OLD WAYS FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.

I really wish fandom would get together and just migrate to Dreamwidth or something. I spend more time at Tumblr these days than LJ, but it's really difficult to have conversations there. So, that bums me out.
Kali: eng :: like shakespeare and verse_thirty2flavors on November 1st, 2012 12:09 am (UTC)
lol that's how I am with every website redesign tbh. "Do you want to try the new style?" NO I DO NOT. Fucking timeline, for example, is the absolute worst.

Yeahhhhh I wish a mass-migration or something was more practical. But I think everyone's just going to end up scattered. Especially to Tumblr. DW fandom is SO much more active on Tumblr these days, but Tumblr SUCKS at stuff like discussion and fic and... anything other than art, basically. It makes me sad too because the discussion and stuff is what I like about fandom.
captaintish on November 1st, 2012 04:42 pm (UTC)
LOL, timeline. I don't completely understand Facebook, really. Like, I use it as a necessary evil, but I spend an absolute minimum of time there.

I enjoy Tumblr for what it is, but yeah, I find it impossible to have any conversations there. So, that sucks. It saddens me, too.
alephlacunaz on October 31st, 2012 08:38 pm (UTC)
Poor LiveJournal. I've been splashing around in Tumblr for a little while, but basically I've come to the conclusion that I don't really like it.

I watched Misfits and was pretty underwhelmed, tbh. They should have ended it after last season when they wrapped up that Simon/Alisha mess of a storyline.
Kali: misfits :: alisha :: do i suck or blow?_thirty2flavors on October 31st, 2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
I've become pretty active on Tumblr largely because LJ is so dead, but it's really not the same and LJ offers a lot of functions that Tumblr doesn't -- or at least, LJ offers those functions as of right now. I do find it strange that instead of trying to emphasize the stuff they have that no one else does, LJ is trying to just mimic Tumblr and Facebook by taking away the functionality that makes them distinct and different.

Yeah they should've just ended it last season. The show's gotten worse every year after peaking with the s1 finale/s2 premiere.

Dreamwidth Exodus: Take... 5?

I had not heard that LJ is taking away paid features :/
Kali: eng :: is not that strange?_thirty2flavors on November 1st, 2012 12:11 am (UTC)
lol ikr. I hesitate to say LET'S MOVE TO DREAMDWIDTH now because it's never worked in the past. But if they do get rid of paid accounts, introduce ads everywhere and redesign the entire site, I can see it maybe finally happening.

They mentioned it on one of the Russian release pages, apparently. They want to get rid of them for next spring.
lorelaisquared: Sad: Ron/Hermioneslorelaisquared on October 31st, 2012 11:59 pm (UTC)
I've been clinging to LJ but I think I might at least migrate my posts to Dreamwidth and maybe start double posting. If most of my flist moves over there then I guess I might but IDK, I've been on LJ for like 10 years so I don't want to leave, but if my flist isn't here anymore, what's the point.
Kali: dw :: rose :: you were fantastic_thirty2flavors on November 1st, 2012 12:12 am (UTC)
Yeah I'm thinking the same, I guess I'll at least spruce up my Deamwidth a but in preparation for the no-paid-account total layout conversion that is apparently coming our way in this spring. BLECH. I've been on LJ for about ten years as well, so this sux.
lorelaisquared: Sad: Doomsdaylorelaisquared on November 1st, 2012 11:13 am (UTC)
Yeah I'm doing Nano this year so it won't happen right away but I think I'm going to start at least xposting with dreamwidth by the end of the year. It makes me sad though. Maybe LJ will pull something good out of it's hat but I'm not optimistic. Bad move LJ, bad move.
sherrilina: Doomsday Ten/Rosesherrilina on November 1st, 2012 02:45 am (UTC)
The flist thing doesn't bother me because I use notifs to keep up anyway (sooo much easier IMO), but this paid accounts thing is bullshit and makes me so angry and sad--why are they so intent on driving customers away?! >:( And are they going to refund us if the take them away in the spring? I have a DW account, but it's just not the same--especially because you can't bring over icons with your comments, etc....idk I wish I could box up my LJ just as it looks now, I have spent enough time making it look that way. :/

Tumblr is just not an adequate replacement for LJ, it's good for different things, even if so many people in fandom use their Tumblr like one. *sigh*

And lol, Misfits...I actually only just finally caught up on season 3 last week. I'm kind of hesitant to watch s4 when nobody is left, and your review doesn't encourage me. They just don't know when to stop with this show....

I think the paid account thing was false? Something to do with a poor translation of a Russian announcement? I don't know the details, but I think they're actually planning on expanding paid features. Regardless, they're not doing away with paid/permanent accounts, it seems. LJ sucks in general but there is really no viable alternative (no one will convince me that Dreamwidth is actually going to Happen). From what I've seen, people aren't leaving to go make long blogs on other platforms, people are leaving for micro-blogging sites AND I DON'T WANT ALL OF MY INTERNET LIFE TO BE MICRO BLOGGING I LIKE WORDS WITHOUT HASHTAGS. ACTUAL SENTENCES.

Ugh, this. LIVEJOURNAL WHY DO YOU HATE US. When they first started with the changes I figured out ways around them but it seems like they are determined to make everyone conform.

And dreamwidth is awesome but kind of empty.

So basically everything is sad.
