ponderings + elementary thoughts
I met up with a friend for lunch today who I haven't seen all summer. She's doing her MA at the university we both went to for our undergrad, so she started classes yesterday. We ended up walking to a coffee shop near campus and chilling there for a while. It was pretty weird. My university is right downtown, so I pass it a lot when I'm in that area anyway, but this is the first time since classes that I've been on campus while it was bustling with students and not... been one of them.

I don't really think of myself as someone who misses school much. My friend Tania told us last week that she's in such school withdrawl that she bought school supplies even though she doesn't need them, lmao. I am not like that. I was glad to be done with my undergrad. But I kind of missed it today? I mean, I guess in part I just missed the purposefulness -- if I was in classes right now I wouldn't feel like such a waste of space, I guess. But I dunno, I think I just like the idea of being in school more than the actual reality of it, probably because for the most part being a student is an excuse to not be an actual adult yet, and right now I am neither a student nor an actual adult.

In less navel-gaze-y news, look what I got in the mail yesterday!:

That is a Hamlet postcard and a dinosaur necklace from idk my bff Liz. YOU KNOW ME WELL. It was excellent. I wore the necklace today and got compliments on it from both my friend and the cashier. TY BB.

In potentially more interesting news I watched the Elementary pilot. Overall I liked it! I think the show will probably be relatively procedural-y and tbh I wasn't very interested in that aspect of it and still am not, but it was interesting enough and there was enough focus on Holmes and Watson as characters to keep me entertained. From what I saw of it the case more or less made sense. It wasn't super mindblowing but it was solid and it was nice that they focused the blame on the dude exploiting the mentally ill person, instead of the mentally ill person themselves.

In terms of characters, I thought they were well done. I've read approximately one of ACD's stories and have little investment in Sherlock Holmes as a franchise or ~keeping true to canon~, so I can't say whether this was a "faithful" adaptation or not. TBH I think at this point Sherlock Holmes is a bit like Shakespeare, and being original and interesting in your adaptation should take precedence over being "faithful", but whatever. The point is, I liked JLM's Holmes and Liu's Watson. Especially Liu's Watson. Joan don't take no shit. "GO WAIT IN THE CAR" ":( okay" lol forever. And I liked that, while Holmes was still kind of a dick, he at least seemed to be trying not to be. I thought the stuff about how he knew she'd killed a patient but didn't say it because he figured it'd be a touchy subject was really good. I don't really dig "sociopath" (lol THE INTERNET'S NEW FAVOURITE WORD) Holmes. I can't root for a guy who gives no fucks about anyone/thing.

Anyway, there is my verdict. If you like crime procedurals with character stuff I would say you will probably like it a lot. Actually I'm probably going to recommend it to my mom, LOL.

I still buy school supplies and I've been out of school for years now. LOL, I just call them work supplies instead. I just wish I had more use for notebooks, and folders. At work I mostly just use steno notebooks, and they're usually pretty boring.

Ugh, the procedural aspect is what is making me kind of doubtful about Elementary. I mean, I've wanted to get into Castle for years, but the procedural crime-of-the-week format is what's kind of been preventing me. I'll probably watch an episode or two of Elementary when it premieres to see if I can get into it.

Yeah I like school supply stuff but have no use for it lol. I am not buying it in grief, though.

I wouldn't usually check out a procedural but all the wank about Elementary has me interested enough to give it a shot. If there's enough emphasis on the main characters, I could see it being pretty interesting. I mean, Sherlock Holmes is always going to be something of a procedural. Sherlock is as well. That's how detective stories are. But if they keep up enough of an emotional plotline, it's not so bad.

I'm about to buy school supplies for the first time in quite a while! When I did my online studies I didn't need anything (though I did have a notebook) so I never went shopping. But when I was in regular school, back to school shopping for both clothes and supplies was just so exciting for me. It was like, think of all the potential! But then sometimes I realized that I didn't end up using some of the things I'd bought when I went a little overboard.

But I will definitely be getting notebooks, pens, pencils, and highlighters for college.

I liked the Elementary pilot, too! I don't mind procedurals/case of the week episodes but I only like them if the character stuff is good. I like Castle, I liked Bones for the first 2 seasons before it turned really bad, and I think I'll like this too. They did such a good job with the characters, even if the case was on the boring side. And since they just started, I'm giving them the chance to make their cases slightly more interesting.

I didn't really buy too many school supplies even when i was in school tbh. Lmao, my last semester was spent using a pad of paper for both classes and being terribly disorganized because of it, but I think that's largely a senioritis thing.

Yeah if there's enough focus on the characters/their relationship I can see it staying interesting. I really liked Holmes and Watson and their interaction in this ep, so I'm curious to see how it develops, and I think they set up both characters with plenty of future development etc to go through.

I am automatically conditioned to click on "spoilers" when you post about them, but I really want to watch Elementary! I really don't like procedural shows (the exception is The Good Wife, though I don't know how procedure-y that actually is), but I might soldier through just because I want Elementary to do well.

I took a practice LSAT last week just to give myself a direction. I do miss classes and Intellectual Talking About Things, but right now I prefer being an adult. I'd much prefer to be an adult with a job, but you know ...

LOLLLLL i am the same re: Elementary. I would likely not have ever checked it out if it weren't for the surrounding fandom wank and such, but here we are! Anyway I thought it was good. The pilot I saw was a leak, so the show doesn't air for another few weeks yet.

I think if I had a job I might not really miss school. I don't know. I don't think I missed school when I was working, but before when I was working I was only doing it for 4-month stretches, so ti's hard to say. I wish I could just be a part-time student forever because my last semester was the life, lol. Two classes I was interested in made a small enough course load that I was never particularly stressed.

LOL RIGHT? I'm all about supporting things that are Not Moffatt. It's a passive, semi-productive kind of trolling.

What's weird about school for me is that I frequently miss the academics, but at the end the environment got too much for me. I enjoyed the perks of student life that involved being on my own (getting up late, doing whatever the fuck I wanted) but was socially feeling really tired of my friend group and of Stanford in general. So when I think about school, I do wish I was still ~living the life~ and taking certain classes - I just can't imagine being back in that environment. IDK perhaps it would be different if I had gone to a different university.

I was never very involved in school which I think combines to make me a) not miss it as much as some but also b) not have enough traumatic memories to make me super relieved to be done. I don't miss the stress but I do miss the productivity and towards the end of my degree when I was finally taking classes I wanted to be taking, I liked lectures and stuff. I really liked my seminars. IDK how your school worked so I don't know if you had "seminars" or even if you did what those were like, but I quite liked them.

oh and I fully endorse doing anything that might make Steven Moffat mad somewhere.

I'm back in school now and my greatest joy right now is watching all the first years try to adapt. It's nice because they haven't discovered the best hang-out spots yet, so I get to lounge around in the comfy chairs.

I don't really like crime procedurals at all but I want Elementary to be super fabulous and popular so that the internet can shut the fuck up.
Kali_thirty2flavors on September 7th, 2012 01:27 am (UTC)
lol I was taking the bus home from downtown on Monday and I caught it at the campus stop and it was flooded with people from frosh week. GROSS TBH.

IKR. To quote someone on ONTD, I want 9 seasons, a movie, a theme park, and Elementary: Miami and Elementary: Las Vegas.

I'm finally doing the practicum part of my degree, and oddly enough don't miss classes... I know what you mean about the "responsible adult" grace period while in school though. Mine has been extended until next summer when I'm done my internship.

Elementary sounds better than I expected! I might have to check it out. If nothing else, at least it has the dubious honour of having spawned some epic wank.

Also, awesome necklace!

Yeah I did co-op and I didn't really miss class when I was working. I don't think I miss school exactly so much as I miss productiveness. And having an excuse for not having a job, lol.

Elementary was pretty good. I hope it'll do well on CBS.

I'm going to watch Elementary purely out of spite; I have no actual interest in it.

It took me a long ass time to stop missing college. I'm still kind of homesick for it, tbh. I'm still putting off adulthood, but it's not the same~

oh gosh I adored the Elementary pilot backwards, forwards, and sideways. I need more like I need oxygen dfkjghkjdf I just really felt drawn by it. I'm in love with Lucy Liu and hoping probably against hope that Joan gets a girlfriend BUT THAT'S ANOTHER STORY ENTIRELY...

I just really enjoyed myself while watching it. I thought it was an excellent pilot and I already love Sherlock and Joan (SANS ANY ROMANCE PLS AND TY). I just love that Sherlock is intelligent and Sherlock-y but not perfect. Undoubtedly Moffat could never take his Sherlock off his precious pedestal and apologize to someone. :|
Kali: dw :: doctordonna :: so not married_thirty2flavors on September 7th, 2012 04:45 am (UTC)
You have an icon and everything already! They exist! lol Joan getting a girlfriend would be so A+. PLZ CBS GODS PLZ. Not that I'm exceedingly hopeful.

Yeah I liked it. And I quite liked JLM's Holmes because -- yeah. He was a dick but he actually had to apologize for it. And I like that... I dunno I like that so far their relationship seems to be closer to this:

than the other way around lol.
Anya: actor → jean dujardinerethesunrises on September 7th, 2012 02:36 pm (UTC)
Yes, right. I have a lot of hopeful and positive feelings about this show already so I am just desperately hoping it keeps getting better. And that fanaaaaart. I love their relationship so much and it's only been one episode!
fauxkarenfauxkaren on September 7th, 2012 03:13 am (UTC)
I think my favorite thing about the Elementary pilot was that Sherlock was flawed and the show acknowledged it. Not like "isn't it so cute what a dick he is, but really it's part of his ~grand plan~ so it's all ok!". Elementary Sherlock was sometimes a bit childish-like when he crashed Joan's car. And the show just let it be a flaw instead of it being part of a plot to catch the crook.

And ofc Joan was FLAWLESS.

I'm not usually that big on crime procedural shows, but I thought Miller and Liu were so much fun to watch that I want to keep watching.

I haven't watched it because it's not going to show for ages</i. where I am... but I'm going to watch just for the novelty of Lucy Liu as Watson.

I've been out of school for... gosh three years now? And every fall I still feel a little weird about not going to class. It's not as strong now that I have a full-time job, but it still crops up every once in awhile. Like you I don't really miss the reality of being a student - like, I enjoy that my evenings are weekends are mine and not devoted to schoolwork - but I do miss that feeling like I was going places and I still had time to make adult decisions instead of feeling like OH CRAP REAL LIFE ALERT. Also kind of miss... using my brain. I don't feel really mentally challenged, but I suppose it's up to me to fill in the gaps by...reading...and...stuff.
