The Summer Games never dazzle me as much as the Winter ones, because there are no summer sports I'm super invested it, and because Team Canada never does very well. But nonetheless I was pretty psyched to watch the Opening Ceremonies and THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

James Bond and the Queen skydived out of a helicopter. Mr Bean played piano. Kenneth Branagh recited Shakespeare. JKR did a reading. THERE WAS A MOTHERFUCKING 40FT INFLATABLE VOLDEMORT, DEFEATED BY MARY POPPINS.

Well played, London, well played.

I'm such a bastard, because I am the one of these people, who are not super-extra-mega excited about Olympics (well at least not even half as much as I was about Euro2012).

Forgive me, UK. D:

I think it'll wane for me soon because Canada always does so terribly in the Summer games, and it's less fun when there's no one to root for. But the Opening Ceremonies definitely reawoke the inner Olympic stan I've had inside since Van2010. And all the majestic shots of London are helping!

Lolll ITA, to me Euro Cup (or World Cup too) >>> Olympics so much, even though I'm from the land of no football (USA) but luckily Spain is like my second home...;)

This was by far the most fun I've had watching an Opening Ceremony. XD

IKR!! I don't think I've ever sat through a full one before, but this was like everything I could've hoped for. TOO BAD THEY CUT OUT THE DW THEME. DON'T FAIL ME NOW CLOSING CEREMONIES.

It was a "blink and you miss it" moment, but the sound of the TARDIS materializing was mixed into the music during the 70's section of that "Frankie and June" routine. The friend with whom we watched the ceremony knew it was coming from a tweet, so we rewound it to listen again - I definitely heard it the second time. It's a crowd scene, during which the actors (including the male lead in their *love* story) is standing amongst the audience. I'll try to see if my friend has the exact time it occurs, but someone has no doubt already captured it and put it on the interwebs. :)

I had heard a lot of it before actually as like, spoilers, and assumed it was false. MARY POPPINS VS VOLDEMORT? JAMES BOND AND THE QUEEN PARACHUTING? PFFFFFT. I stand corrected!

lol I went to go find some Canada icons.

I get SUPER into random summer sports that I normally do not care one iota about like beach volleyball. And then I always enjoy watching the US compete in swimming and track and gymnastics.

I like flipping throuhg random sports but the summer doesn't have any where I know the rules well or anything. Like the Winter Games has a lot of random ones I find fun to watch -- like how fun are the ski jumps and stuff? -- as well as men's and women's hockey for me to obsess over and be outraged over calls in.

I have a super-soft spot for the Opening Ceremonies no matter where the games are. I think I've watched them ever since I was a kid and I swear there's always something about them that gets me all happy and emotional. ^_^ Summer olympics I like because of gymnastics and winter for the figure skating because I'm kinda cliche like that...

But somehow this year's Opening Ceremonies is making me especially giddy.

I'm watching gymnastics right now and it's pretty cool and impressive, but the Summer Games lacks... well a) lol it lacks a strong Canadian team, but b) it also lacks a sport like hockey where I would watch it regularly, not just for the Olympics.

But yes! This year's Opening Ceremonies were extra hilarious, I guess because this time I got most of the references whereas Beijing, while quite a spectacle, is largely stuff I am unfamiliar with.

Oh man, sounds amazing! :( I had to finish some work so I missed all of that, boo...hopefully it will be on YT or something. I did get a glimpse of the "FY Socialized Medicine--In Ur Face, American Anti-Healthcare People!" skit though which made me LOL.
Kali_thirty2flavors on July 28th, 2012 04:17 pm (UTC)

It was pretty neat though. I was a bit bored at some parts, but overall there was plenty to keep me entertained and the final lighting ceremony part was really beautiful and the design of the cauldron (it's made up of bits that were brought in by each of the nations during the parade) is a great idea.

OLYMPICS. I am such a stan for them. I also prefer the Winter but with summer I have soccer/swimming/diving so I do have some sports I really care about! But whatever it is, I love the national pride and unity and fun that the Olympics are. :D

Kali: olympics :: the eh team_thirty2flavors on July 29th, 2012 08:53 pm (UTC)
Yeah I say I'm not that into the summer games but that's all I've been doing when I'm at home, so why not. It would be nice if Canada had a bit stronger of a team because it's fun to root for someone, but I'm also getting a lot of entertainment out of watching this Chinese guy lift 130+kg so hey.

IT WAS FABULOUS AND I STILL CAN'T GET OVER *HOW* FABULOUS IT WAS. I got up at 4 a.m. to watch the whole thing. No regrets.
Kali: olympics :: the eh team_thirty2flavors on July 29th, 2012 08:57 pm (UTC)
LOL. I am lucky enough that CTV aired it live with Britain and while it was an awkward time of day, I'm an unemployed bum so it was easy for me to watch it live. But it was totally great!
ibishtar: Harry Potteribishtar on July 28th, 2012 10:19 pm (UTC)
It was fantastic! I've been looking forward to it so much, and though I missed watching it live I got to freak out over the repeats today. Big hit with the rest of my family too. We're such a bunch of Anglophiles. Can't choose between the awesome of the Queen and James Bond parachuting in, the story-book/F-yeah NHS section and the lighting of the Flame. Even got emotional with Abide With Me, but that song always gets to me ever since I first heard it in Gridlock. You go, Brits. Be proud of your country.
Kali: act :: are you disrespecting me?_thirty2flavors on July 30th, 2012 04:20 pm (UTC)
lol yeah the Opening Ceremonies were great. It's probably the first time (other than Canada) in recent memory where I've been able to understand/appreciate most of the cultural stuff, even if it was like... James Bond. It was fun! And the cauldron idea is absolutely excellent.

YES. I am stoked even though Team GB has so far been a total failure on the medals front. But we did do a fabulous opening ceremony.
Kali: eng :: oh man is a giddy thing_thirty2flavors on July 30th, 2012 04:23 pm (UTC)
hahahah Canada hasn't done any better. But at least we HAVE a medal by day 2 this year -- in Beijing it was 8 days before we got our first, yikes.
