and now i guess i will go find parks and rec
I. I keep coming to make an lj post and then stopping because I realize I don't really have much to say. But I got a new default icon and I want to use it, damn you all, so I am posting anyway! Dealwithit.gif

I blame my lack of having anything to discuss partly on the fact that my lj tends to be fandom-dominated and nothing interesting has been happening in Doctor Who fandom since forever. I guess they start filming series 7 in a week or so. I would be lying if I said I was super pumped, but I am pretty curious about who the next companion will be. Oh, and I guess they announced some more writers, including my bro Toby Whithouse. And also my mortal enemy Chris Chibnall.

Series 6 stole his "writer of my least favourite episode ever" crown. HAS HE COME TO RECLAIM IT IN SERIES 7? My guess is "probably". I seriously can't with Chibnall, like at least with Moffat I can see the things he does that appeal to people even when they don't appeal to me.

II. In other fandom-ish news I guess, we watched Decoy Bride last week, the shitty romcom David Tennant filmed approximately a billion years ago just after Doctor Who. I wasn't expecting much and I still thought it was disappointingly awful. The script was just generally poorly-written and ill-conceived and the characters behaved in ways nonsensical even in the land of romcoms. I started writing a post about why it was so terrible but it's not even funny-bad, just bad-bad. Consider this my suggestion that no one spend the $10 or whatever it is to rent this or go see it in theatres. This is why God invented the internet.

So to cleanse our palates, Tay and I (re)watched Casanova.

Eighteenth century hipsters

Tay had never seen it before; I think Casanova is the first non-Doctor Who thing I saw David Tennant in back in like 2008 and I accidentally watched the episodes out of order, so I didn't remember it particularly well other than that I had enjoyed it despite having to jigsaw the plot together due to my own incompetence. Anyway, my memory served me well, because it was excellent. Probably my favourite non-Doctor Who non-Shakespeare David Tennant-related thing, predictably. Oh RTD, I both love and miss you. I assume basically all of you have seen it by now but if you haven't go watch that instead of Decoy Bride. Alternatively just rewatch it instead of watcing Decoy Bride, both of these options are preferable.

III. We also watched Karen Gillan in "We'll Take Manhattan". It... was pretty dull IMO, but Karen was adorable. Unfortunately the moral seemed to be "people realizing that Karen Gillan is beautiful", which is a hard moral to really connect with.

IV. Considering I started this post with nothing to say, it's gotten pretty long. I will end with a meme lifted from kilodalton: Leave me a character and I'll tell you my top 3 ships for them.

a) Doctor/Rose! I will follow my own rules and not list three different iterations of Doctor/Rose. But everything else is a very very distant second and third tbh.

b) Rose/Mickey. I don't think they had the greatest relationship in the universe or that it was a Great Love foiled by the Doctor, but I did think they had moments of cuteness in a young dumb teenage way.

c) HMMMMMMM. I'll go with Rose/Martha for a couple reasons, the first being that there aren't really any remaining people Rose interacted with at length that I'd ship her with, and the second being that of the Whoniverse ladies I think Martha is the most like the Doctor so that kind of works, right?, but the third and possibly most important being that it would be hot and one step closer to the Billie Piper/Freema Agyeman lesbian buddy comedy firstofoct and I dream of.

in retrospect lol @ my answers. FOURSOME?

I thought of you when I read the writer announcements. I too was like "Toby Whithouse! :D :D :D Chris Chibnall. So we meet again. :-|"

Casanova is a good palate cleanser, nice choice. Like a good DT stan, I have watched it multiple times. It excels as a "I am home with the flu" viewing experience.

IKR most of my Toby Whithouse excitement was extinguished by Chris Chibnall. So far Whithouse is the only writer they have lined up who excites me in any way. Can we get a lock on Gareth Roberts plz? He is the only other regular who has yet to disappoint me. On the bright side I just remembered the no two-parters rule means Chibnall won't have a two-parter. SMALL MERCIES.

It had been quite a while since I'd seen it so I was a little worried my memory was skewed but nope it was appropriately awesome.

LOL GOT. When are we planning to do that? Doesn't the next season start at the beginning of April?

2) LOL BELLE/TEN, IDC, I SCORN ALL CROSSOVER SHIPS EXCEPT THIS ONE. I don't know if "ship" is the right word because it's not like I want them to get married but it would be the best.

3) um Hannah/basically any of her clients because they were all better than her boyfriends? OH. HANNAH/THAT MALE PROSTITUTE SHE VISITED. Aw yeah. I don't remember his name but w/e.

I think I still prefer Chibnall to Moffat, because he managed to write at least 1 or two episodes I genuinely love in s2 of TW (the flashback epp, Fragments I think? The Ianto retcons aside...and I think another epp), whereas I can't think of a Moffat epp I genuinely love, really...:s

If they've begun filming, when are they going to need to cast the new companion, I wonder?

And for characters, um, Harry.
Kali: hp :: honeybadger don't give a shit_thirty2flavors on February 10th, 2012 03:43 am (UTC)
Moffat has actually written episodes I genuinely like. I love "Eleventh Hour" still -- it's my favourite of his -- and I think "The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang" are pretty good as episodes go. "Blink" is great even if it doesn't have a rewatchability to it. Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone are a bit dumb but not terrible, and The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances would be great if not for Rose. Chibnall on the other hand struck out with me entirely.

It must be soon! I guess it depends how much Karen and Arthur are in this season.

a) Harry/Ginny was fine by me tbh
b) Harry/Luna would also have been cute, I think Luna would've been pretty good at dealing with his moodiness and lightening him up.
c) Maybe Harry/Ron? Guy love between two guys. He's definitely fonder of Ron than he is of most people. And Ginny is a lot like Ron so.. lol

Just read that Chinball will write an episode. God at least now I can say I'm happy there won't be any two-parters in s7! Coz his last one was OMG SUCH A YAWN-FEST! Maybe Moffat just brings him along for the fans to hate as means of diversion?

I watched Casanova right after DW s4 and it was sooooo weird watching Tennant as someone who is not a Doctor. XD

Martha Jones?
Kali: act :: freems :: pretty lady_thirty2flavors on February 10th, 2012 03:56 am (UTC)
LOL IKR THE NO TWO-PARTER RULE SUDDENLY BECAME AMAZING. I always get the sense that Chibnall is just part of this ol' boys club-type thing, and while I know that's basically how the television industry at large works, with Chibnall it bothers me especially because I just feel like he is so devoid of talent.

LOL I'm pretty used to that now but the blue contacts were wigging me out this time around. I think the first time I didn't even notice beyond a vague subconscious "something seems... different..." It's nice that I actually really like Casanova though, which is a change from many of the characters he plays lolol.

I don't think I can rank my Martha ships in any particular order but here are the top 3:

a) Martha/Tom! They had such little screentime but I had warmed up to them as being sweet and then boom. I have a lot of headcanon on Martha/Tom and the demise of Martha/Tom now acutally lol
b) Martha/Mickey! I wish we'd gotten to see them get together DAMN BOTH OF YOU FOR BAILING ON TORCHWOOD but I can see how the characters would work, and I can see how it would be hard for either of them to be with someone who hadn't seen aliens etc etc.
c) There are lots of wildcard romances I could throw in here tbh. I choose Martha/Tosh! They could bond over being in love with Doctors who are total dicks but then realize they are both way too good for him anyway and then maybe make out and have sex.

Kali: dw :: amy :: i've got your back_thirty2flavors on February 10th, 2012 04:41 am (UTC)
Haha not at all!

1) Amy/Rory! Easily my OTP for Amy ngl. I grew to be really fond of them as a ship by the end of s5 and one of the few things s6 cemented was my affection for Amy/Rory. It was nice to see them as a more functioning, secure couple in series 6.

2) She was pretty cute with Vincent Van Gogh I guess. I spent most of that episode too butthurt about dead Rory to really appreciate it, but it was one of my favourite Amy episodes in series 5 and it was nice to see her really connect with him when for the most part she hadn't connected with people that season.

3) lol HANNAH BAXTER! Who she meets through Rory's twin cousin Ben, obviously.

The blue contacts freaked me out a bit more this time around because I was actually aware of them. Most of the time I didn't notice too much but every time there was like a soulful closeup it was like "whoa that's not right".

They have not!

1) Doctor/Rose SURPRISE though ofc I mean exclusively Nine/, Ten/ and Cloen/Rose. Sorry Eleven, none for you.

2) Doctor/Master, though in my heart I mean Ten/John Simm Master because I don't curr about Classic Who. And by "ship" I mean I just want them to have a lot of emotionally complex and interesting scenes with lots of homoerotic subtext, I don't particularly need to read about them having kinky morally-dubious sex.

3) IDK IDK. Eleven/Idris was the most I've ever liked an Eleven ship and I thought it was very sweet in that episode, but I feel weird including "dude/sentient time machine" on the list I guess. Of Ten's flings I liked Astrid best. Four and Romana clearly had a little somethin' somethin' going on.

UGH GOD. I felt so blessed when Camelot was cancelled and it freed up Eva Green to be in something good that I could actually stand to watch, but I guess I forgot that it would also free up Chibnall to return to Who. Blerg.

IKR I laughed at his show being cancelled because i'd heard it was terrible but I forgot/didn't realize it meant he'd come back to haunt me. Damn you, Chibnall!

1) April/Andyyyy! I love April/Andy. I think it's kind of an ideal ship in the sense that it's the sort of ship that brought a LOT to both characters and made both of their stories so much better rather than detracting from either. April pre-Andy was funny but her emotional disconnect and apathy was unrelatable and got a bit stale, and Andy pre-April was embarassingly Roy-like. But once the writers picked up on their chemistry and started to develop April/Andy, April started having a softer side and genuine human emotion and Andy started becoming a likable puppydog instead of an obnoxious idiot. THEY ARE SO CUTE. I love that their young marriage hasn't really been a conflict so far.

I'm having such a hard time coming up with other pairings for April because I am so all about April/Andy lolol. So I will give you my two other favourite April relationships:

2) Leslie! I love Leslie's attempts to mentor April and I likewise love that April secretly loves it and loves and respects Leslie.

3) RON SWANSON, Ron and April are the greatest, I love their hilarious but deep camaraderie.

You should! You would like it, I mean RTD + David Tennant, you kind of can't go wrong.

ALSO LOL I got a bunch of photos printed today which meant sifting through all sorts of London photos, and I discovered that a couple of your stage door photos from that night you and Yessie went to the show TOTALLY have the back of my head in the same photo as David Tennant, which is probably the closest I'll come to an actual photo with him SO LOL WELL DONE.

1) Robin/Barney was my main Robin ship on HIMYM and still would be I think if I hadn't flounced from the show. I didn't realize how much I liked them as a ship until they were handled so awfully by the writers, with the abrupt and stupid break-up episode.

2) Robin/Lily could totally be a thing. Or Robin/Lily/Marshall. I'm pretty sure Lily has even expressed interest in this before, LOL.

3) I'm not sure I really have a third one. In one of me and Frances' fics Cloen has a brief thing with a tall dark-haired woman named Robin, so maybe it can be Robin Scherbatsky.
