IN A SHOCKING TWIST... a post about TV
I. Last night Hannah, Tay and I watched Mrs Ratcliffe's Revolution, which is a movie from 2007 starring Catherine Tate and Iain Glen. The basic plot is that downtrodden housewife Catherine Tate & her family move to East Germany in the late 60s when her communist husband Jorah Mormont takes a teaching job over there. It was actually pretty great! Catherine Tate was in the starring role for once instead of a bit-part, her character was excellent, the plot was interesting and it was pretty funny in a genuine-funny way and not an LA-Without-a-Map way.

Also she wears this amazing swim cap.

II. Speaking of Catherine Tate, apparently on Boxing Day there'll be a two-hour documentary airing called Catherine Tate: Laughing at the 00s, about (British I assume) comedy in the last decade:

Sketch-show sensation Catherine tells the story of the decade in which she became a household name. She meets with comedy glitterati Alan Carr, David Walliams, Noel Fielding, Rob Brydon and her Doctor Who co-star, David Tennant, all of whom reflect on the greatest comedy moments in recent history.

As well as showcasing all the most entertaining, memorable comedy of the time, the documentary also features newsreel and pop culture archive that contextualises the gags. It reveals not just what was funny, but why it was funny.

I don't have much to do with British comedy BUT WHO CARES, Catherine Tate is hosting a thing and interviewing David Tennant for it, so I am already prepping some popcorn.

III. I'd heard a while ago that supposedly that Love Life program was Curb Your Enthusiasm-style scriptless improv, but I wasn't sure how true that was until I saw this interview with Kaya Scodelario floating around Tumblr. Honestly?

Most interesting thing about this project TBH, I am now genuinely intrigued for reasons beyond casting. I mean, that definitely has the potential to be terrible on every level, but it'll be a NEW and EXCITING kind of terrible. On the downside, apparently Billie Piper's character doesn't actually make out with Kaya Scodelario's character which seems like a wasted opportunity.

That movie was legitimately enjoyable, which was so nice. I have determined that there's a difference in the way I view Catherine Tate's projects with David Tennant's. With David Tennant's, I'm constantly looking for the joke, a new way to make fun of Ten, constantly ranking him on the douche-o-meter, and seeing how much he cries. When I watch something with Catherine Tate, I'm just ready for her to be her flawless self.

I hope I like Love Life better than CYE.

LOL. I was going to say that Catherine Tate had less hilariously bad ones, but then I remembered Monte Carlo and Gulliver's Travels exist and we haven't watched them soooo. Well, I haven't watched them.

lololol your hatred for Curb Your Enthusiasm was hilarious to me.
Hannahfirstofoct on November 27th, 2011 04:30 am (UTC)
LOL I have seen both of those. HRH Tate plays super posh characters in both.

I didn't hate it per se.

lol Gulliver's Travels is one of the worst things I've ever seen.
Hannahfirstofoct on November 27th, 2011 05:57 am (UTC)
Um but HRH Tate says the best line ever in it.

I haven't seen Gulliver's Travels but I did see Monte Carlo, and it was ridiculous but a lot of fun. Catherine Tate played the suspicious duchess aunt who looked down her nose at everyone FABULOUSLY.

I have a feeling that Love Life is going to be many different kinds of terrible.

I'M EXCITED THOUGH. IT WILL BE A NEW KIND OF TERRIBLE.

It seems unfair to me that Catherine Tate manages to look that adorable in a bathing cap tbh. THAT IS NEVER A FLATTERING LOOK. But looking at that cap makes me want to know more so she wins this round.

It was a fun movie! Catherine Tate's character was awesome. It was a good role for her.

Love Life sounds like it could either be really good or really awful. Use your magical improv skills to make it the former, team.

IKR? Either way I will be popcorn gifin'. I haven't seen a drama improv before, the only show I can think of like this is Curb Your Enthusiasm, so I am curious. Also have any of these people done improv before? IDK.

Hee, CT in that swim cap is pretty cute. XD

And omg Love Life. I AM ALREADY CRINGING. Although lol I guess there were no make outs because of the potential creep factor, if the character is meant to be 17 or whatever. STILL, DEFINITELY A WASTED OPPORTUNITY.

LOL WHATEVER, IT WILL BE AWESOME.

Most interesting thing about this project TBH
lies Kaya and Billie Piper being together and being student/teacher and being lesbians is still the most interesting thing!!!

If I tried to pretend I was not devastated over the lack of love scenes nobody would believe it but omg still

don't even care about the improv I am lying in a bed of my own tears

Where did you get Mrs Radcliffe's Revolution? I've been checking the torrent sites for ages and haven't found it and I really want to see it. That and The Bad Mothers Handbook.
