It's a pretty sad news day in Canada.

A plane crash in the Arctic killed 12 and seriously injured the 3 remaining passengers.

An F2-or-F3 tornado hit the tiny town of Goderich, Ontario, which is apparently the strongest storm Ontario's seen in over a decade. Lots of property damage, I'm sure some injured, at least one death. I actually have a lot of family in and around Goderich, though they're all okay and their homes are mostly undamaged. The first (and only as far as I know) fatality was a man who had been working in the salt mine, which is a little scary as that's where my uncle works.

And arguably the item of most national consequence, Opposition leader Jack Layton lost his battle with cancer at 61. His death is a huge blow to his party and to Canadian politics, not to mention his family. In an era of near-total political apathy in Canada, Layton managed to bring the NDP to an unprecedented victory and became essentially the face of left-wing Canada after the collapse of the Liberals and the Bloc. He was the kind of charismatic and inspiring leader Canadian politics badly needs and he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Mr. Layton.

I read somewhere that supposedly he wrote a "letter to Canadians" they're going to release? Omg. D:

I am confident it will, yes.

If this is true. I should probably clarify that it was not the most reliable of sources (Twitter).

My only consolation is that Jack got to see the party kick a bit o' ass before he passed away. He left the party on a high note, at least (though I really can't see them continuing to do that well now that he's gone).

Yeah, I'm glad he at least got to see their historic victory but sad he won't get a chance to act as Opposition Leader in the years to come. :(

I went to the Hill over my lunchbreak and there are flowers and signs and cans of Orange Crush by the Eternal Flame, plus a bunch of people crowded around. Very sad.

Me too. I paid more attention to this election than any other and as disappointed as I was with the overall result I was very surprised and impressed with the NDP's showing, and it was nice to have someone in Parliament who felt like a leader.

Thanks. He'd stepped down ("temporarily") a little while ago and I admit that at the time I was skeptical that we'd see him come back, I'm still surprised by this. I think on some level I always figured he'd pull through, even if he wasn't well enough to return to Parliament.

I'm sorry :( I am laughing a little at the Canada icons in this post though (ESPECIALLY THE HAT ONE).

RIP to him. :( It seems like he was a great guy and a good politician too.

Basically, yeah. D: He was a pretty inspiring leader in an otherwise uninspiring political climate.

i find it hard keeping up with news in uni but i stumbled upon the jack layton news by accident on a french website and ran to my usual newspaper website being like 'omg no no no no no no'

=/ i'm so sad to see him go, and i'm worried about the future of the NDP...he was truly a cornerstone of modern Canadian politics ... argh, just completely broke me

and i feel so guilty that i didn't even know about the plane crash or tornado...time to set my newspaper website as my homepage probably.

I got to work around 8 and at 8:30ish a coworker came in and had barely sat down when sh gasped and told everyone the Globe and Mail was reporting that Layton had died. She must've caught the page just around the time it broke, because someone else wasl ike "it doesn't say that on my screen" but then they refreshed. :\

I'm really sad too, and likewise worried about the NDP. They have 4 years I guess to try and rally behind a strong leader, but Jack Layton was the NDP so I'm not sure how easily they'll be able to carry on without him. It's such a shame that he did so much for his party but never got the chance to really enjoy it and we never really got the chance to see him as leader of the Opposition, even if it was in a majority government.

It may be a bit of an overstatement, but I kind of feel like Canada lost its conscience with Jack's death. He was really a lot of the strength of the NDP, and now...

And as for Goderich - that's SO insane! I was drinking coffee in the square about three or four weeks ago, and now that coffee culture is gone!

What a day. I guess when it rains, it storms. One news day like this kind of puts into perspective the other news days that are like, "New speedbumps have been erected at a mall!" or, "New research suggests that knowing how a book ends doesn't spoil the story for most readers!"

Not that that's really a consolation, but, you know.
