I. How is it December already? Wtf. Happy Hanukkah btw!

II. I started watching Misfits.

I am enjoying this show a lot in a sort of weird way. I guess I kind of like that it's episodic and short and more character-driven than power-driven. I'm surprised by the way a Monster of the Week theme seems to be emerging because that's not what I anticipated, but I am used to Monster of the Week by this point so okay. I like the dark humour though.

The scene where they all get hit by lightning was ridiculous lol IDEK what that was about, with the floating and stuff. The washed out colours and everything create atmosphere~ I guess but whenever they go somewhere with a little bit less gray I am really excited and so are my eyes. I was definitely like "are you kidding me rn" and waiting for Curtis to rewind time after they killed the THIRD GUY, so I was glad to see that was exactly what happened.

I like all of the characters except Simon, who is mostly a creepy motherfucker. I feel kind of bad for him, but mostly he's creepy. He's supposed to be, but still, eesh. Alisha has the most useless superpower imaginable. I am not sure it even counts as a super power since it's basically just like... the power of rape. I was side-eying that whole thing and still kind of am, but I was glad to see them address it in episode 3. She and Curtis are alright although the one spoiler I do know is that she and Simon have sex at some point. Eh.

Nathan is hilarious and surprisingly endearing for a jackass. I figured he would be immortal from episode 4 (WHICH btw was awesome and Turn Left-y and I guess Butterfly Effect-y as well) but they alllmost had me convinced for a second there in the s1 finale, I guess because I'm used to the Jack Harkness brand of immortality where you spring to life instantly and it seemed to take him hours. I mean, there was a funeral and everything, so hypothetically it took days. I was like dying laughing during the finale too and then suddenly it turned to doom and despair and double-death and I was like "oh right this show is British".

Kelly is probably my favourite. Her accent reminded me of Lauren Cooper originally but now I find it really endearing, especially the way she says "fuck". I usually hate mind-reading but I haven't minded how they've used it so far -- though I'm a bit confused? Can she read everything people think or does it kind of like... depend? I'm not sure if I ship Kelly and Nathan or if I just want them to be snarky BFFs forever but I enjoy their interactions.

I feel bad for the dead probation officer lady. I mean, her fiance clearly turned crazy as fuck but she did not know that and I sympathize with her wanting to solve his murder etc. I was kind of like "..." when Simon killed her. I also feel like people die easily on this show ("oh she hit the door! she's dead!") but maybe I'm just used to action movies where people survive everything all the time.

So anyway overall I am enjoying the show and am looking forward to watching the rest, good job Britain. I just watched like 3 in a row so I am taking a break~.

Lastly lol @ Billy Shipton basically getting to play Billy Shipton. I assume this is what he did before he got sent to 1969.

III. Everyone's probably seen this by now, but lol anyway:

LOL He is so adorable in his hipster v-neck. The whole interview cracked me up. American tv and Doctor Who is just kind of automatically funny to me.

I really need to watch Misfits. Badly.

And happy December, bb! Also, Craig Ferguson is fabulous beyond words. I wish I had been back home in LA so I could have seen that.

My method of picking tv shows to watch is sort of arbitrary and Misfits happened to strike that balance of "me being aware of it" without entering "me being irritated by its existence" so I checked it out and I have been enjoying it.

That would've been great, I'm sure it was a lot of fun. And you wouldn't have had to wait a few weeks for the cold open to go on the internet! lol.

There is an AMAZING vid for Simon in season 1 that plays up the creepy factor A LOT! (link below) I actually really like Simon; he and Kelly are my favourites!

Did you watch that episode on youtube? It was pretty funny. American television discussing Doctor Who is always funny.

I couldn't really tell from your emails what your ~verdict~ was but I'm glad you're enjoying it. The more I think about it that more problems I see with the show in general (I went through a total honeymoon phase and was totally blind to such things, ha) but I'm still liking it and looking forward to the rest of the season.

There's just something about British television that calls to me. I don't know what it is.

CraigyFerg, you are a hilarious man. I especially approve of Matt Smith's hipster appearance at the end. A v-neck? Really, Matt?

I started watching Misfits in the summer and I got busy, re watched and I still love it. I know how you feel about the powers, I guess it's related to their personalities and when they grow, the powers evolve or something. They'll explain it soon enough, and I LOVE KELLY as well. Simon is another fave because he has a Dalek in his room in the first series.

I couldn't stop laughing at the rabbit because it sounds like Matt singing. Then he pops up all hipster jonas v-neck. lol. I love this opening number! Craig is my hero.
Kali: dw :: rose :: i love it_thirty2flavors on December 2nd, 2010 03:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah I think the way their powers are tied to their personality makes sense, although I'm not sure what I'm supposed to get from "immortal" and I think Alisha got the short end of the stick there. I had assumed originally that they'd be the only ones with powers, but I was pleased that the show ended up not going that route.

Kelly's great, I love her.

Simon is another fave because he has a Dalek in his room in the first series.

LOL DID HE? I didn't notice.

placebetween on December 2nd, 2010 08:53 pm (UTC)

I really don't like Simon either, and I think it's the classic case of the guy getting less of a rap than the girls do. We will talk after 2x03, but right now everyone is flailing over Simon and it's just like ... he's still creepy as fuck and he takes advantage of passed-out girls and talks to a girl in a freezer that he accidentally killed? He has a LONG way to go if I can like him. The thing I do like about his character is that I can understand why he is like that and I vaguely want to help him, but I am squicked by him at the same time. All of the characters seem a lot more real and have real backstories and shit. Imagine this as an American remake lololol, it would be about .01% as good.

Nathan really is surprisingly endearing. I walk the line between wanting to punch him and laughing, which is possibly why I empathize with Kelly so much because she does exactly that. The only character I don't really connect with is Curtis, and I think it's because he doesn't get a lot outside of his relationship with Alisha.

Kali: dw :: cloen :: hee!_thirty2flavors on December 2nd, 2010 09:03 pm (UTC)
Right? Simon is fucking creepy idc. Every time he just like, stands there with his wide eyes saying nothing and lurking in the background, fuck. lol he reminds me of this kid I used to know, he was the twin brother of one of my friends and one time me and a friend (not his sister) were talking for literally like 20 minutes (ALL OF RECESS OKAY lol) before we realized he was standing behind us listening. What the fuck is that, Ivan.

AND YES omg I forgot about him like, stopping to consider molesting passed-out Kelly ugh ugh gtfo Simon. I watched 2x02 last night so I'll watch 2x03 tonight I am excite. I haven't been to the main Sidereel page in eons because I don't like how it gives me episode summaries, so I don't even know how many episodes have aired yet. 3? 4? Out of six?

Yeah Nathan is one of those characters I feel like I should hate but they've done a pretty good job of making him sympathetic enough that you don't. I think he only works when you have characters like Kelly to keep him in line, though. I like Curtis but IA his story seems to be always in relation to Alisha. I loved him breaking up with Sam using a Spiderman quote though loololol.

II. I s Misfits worth getting into if you already have a million other series that you're currently watching? I've heard so much good about it, but I'm still on the fence...

III. Ferguson and Doctor Who together is so awesome :'D
Kali: misfits :: untouchable_thirty2flavors on December 4th, 2010 05:56 pm (UTC)
II. Well it's very short because it is British, so s1 is only 6 45-minute episodes and s2 is airing on Thursdays and will be on episode 5 next week. I was surprised by how much I liked it, since I didn't really know anything about it going in other than that some people on my flist were watching it (and apparently everyone on ONTD, lol). It's pretty dark comedy but I find it quite funny and I think the characters for the most part are well done.

III. LOL it is!
