[ mood | pensive ]

I've learned several times over about how a particular smell, taste, or other sensation could lead to a feeling of déjà vu, or even a full blown memory. I've experienced this many times growing up, as most people do, but I had a rather strong one just a few moments ago. I was walking toward my bedroom in the dark, the window was open with a fan blowing air inside, and I was stepping from the stagnant warmth into the clammy sort of cool air... And suddenly I was walking in with the intention to finish catching up on Stargate. I had such a strong flashback to the time I was watching the series a few years back that I had completely forgotten everything else for a moment. It startled me so much when I realised where and when I was, I was dumbfounded at how easily I slipped into a memory like that.

I'm a little glad that it happened, though, because it happened on the eve of Memorial Day. Such a simple little memory had such a strong resonance, it hit me so hard that I believed it completely for that moment. Now I know a fraction of what a vet with PTSD feels during a flashback, and I am even more honored that they've stood for my country knowing the difficulties they may face after.

Please have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day, and please reserve a moment of peace for those who have made it possible to do so.

Just started watching episode 8 of Kuroko no Basuke... In the recap, you see Kagami's name written on Midorima's hand and then he gives him a significant look. I totally couldn't help it when the first thing I thought of was if I could have someone change the written name into a phone number for a gif. That significant look could be taken in a completely different way. /fangirl

In other news, I am so exhausted that I may end up falling asleep before I finish watching the episode.

Random thoughts or summat [26 May 2012|05:09pm]
[ mood | amused ]

When dealing with kids' questions, there are many different methods.

"Uhh... Ask your mother."
"I'll tell you when you're older."
"Because/Because I said so." (The horrible 'Because' is the worst of the lot in my opinion)
and "(Insert explanation here.)"

I definitely prefer the last one. I try my hardest to answer kids' questions, no matter how random or inane because I understand that proper answers are how children learn. I don't see what is so bad or difficult about explaining stuff that has been taught to me over the years. Tangents are best, because kids like information that is interesting and related to the topic that they bring up.

Case in point: Kiley (my sister's daughter) and I were playing around with her fan, which turned into "dancing phalanges" (yeah, Bones inspired me to teach her random anatomy stuff), which turned into "Why isn't the thumb called a finger?" that soon evolved into a small introduction to opposable thumbs and then explaining a couple of other differences between humans and animals. Then of course came the inevitable difficult one...

"Well, why do people have butts?"

I couldn't just say 'Because' as that is a cop out. I couldn't do anything but try to explain. But how on earth do I explain the need for the derriere to a little kid?

"Well, how else would you poop?"

She seemed to accept it, while I sighed with relief--there was no way I could explain it in more detail without it either going over her head or somehow making my sister angry.

The shit has hit the fan.

Ugh, repeat of my childhood years indeed. Mom's ex took the money and kicked her and my brother out. She lost approximately 7k (her savings) and is now staying with family until she can get everything sorted and back on her feet. I'm not really trying to start crap or anything, but I have no idea why she put so much trust in him financially after her ex-husband did almost the same thing (stole the money and the business equipment, but lost the court battle over the house) when I was a kid.

I'm saying this here and now, and I do not go back on my word, I will never own a joint account which allows another person full and unfettered access to everything I have.

In other news, I just finished watching Dirty Girl and I suggest everyone else do the same. That movie was amazing. Warning: lotsa R/NC-17-ish language, and there's definite full on nudity for both sexes, also there are homos. Lotsa homos. =)

As the comment section is closed, I thought I ought to add my two cents here.

Frankly, I sort of pity authors who don't allow fanfiction. I adore Harry Potter because I adore the fandom that has been built around the original story that I loved, which was wonderful in an of itself. However, I have lost almost every scrap of affection I have felt for Rice's novels. I have read a few and watched the movies in the past, yes, but then there was nothing more. No continuation of plot, not what-if, nothing. The fans were unable to create anything, so the fandom remained stagnant. Nothing new meant I eventually lost interest in the characters and now don't really care to read more of her work as I really don't want to be disappointed again.

The Harry Potter novels themselves were quite different. The writing may not have been the best, and it definitely seemed to decline (in my opinion) after the fourth volume. Nevertheless, I still loved it and wanted to know more. The fans had kept my interest alive in the months between releases, and I still read fanfiction to this day as there is always something new to check out. Every time I go on an archive website I reaffirm my love for a book or movie, and despite what I think of the author's writing style, I still adore the story they gave to their fans and will continue to do so.

Likewise, doujinshi keep my interest in anime that I watch, and has the same effect as fanfiction (which it essentially is, just in comic form). I probably would have lost interest in many shows while waiting for new episodes if it weren't for the fan-made stories that I have found which help to keep my interest firm. If a scanlation isn't available I amuse myself with what I can figure out from the pictures and sometimes even attempt to translate it myself (which I credit as my Japanese practice, despite my ineptitude).

My latest fan-made interests?
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3766574/1/ (An unfinished Harry Potter fic, very interesting)
http://halkuonmusoka.livejournal.com/3800.html (Amusing Natsume dj)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckf2Ygq5r68 (Cover of "Crazy" by that new viral music guy - It's a way awesome version of a much loved song)

And now I'm off to find more! <3

I've been reading the Discworld series (I am up to Reaper Man; published order) so I decided that I desperately needed to own every single amazing book in the series. So I bought the first one. Out of 33. At $8.00 each, I will need to spend $264.00 to own the series.

Also, I will be starting the Temeraire series, which is thankfully much shorter. I bought the first one already, but I am a little intimidated so I ended up reading Gekuryuuchi instead once I got home. /ashamed

=P I'll start it right before I got to bed, then I'll be desperate for more in the morning and won't even go online for a few hours.

I finished up my chapter 5 Spanish test earlier today, and will be taking my Spanish final exam in two days. I was all, "I suppose I'll relax a bit and then look over my notes briefly before I go to bed, so I'll remember them well. And perhaps I ought to go to bed around 11 or 12 tonight so that I am well rested and ready to study when I wake up."

And then I downloaded all 10 scanlated volumes of Magi and I've been reading them well into the morning. Who needs studying when you have adorable kids running around in pretty clothes and such? Honestly, I think I could have forgotten everything in chapter 2, 4, and 5 without even a tiny shred of concern because of those fluffy pants that Aladdin wears.

Sooo adorable!

Was studying with my sister today. We both have finals so it helps to help each other, however we usually only do her Anatomy stuff because my Spanish notes are complicated and I'm good at Anatomy.

So... I'm probably gonna fail my Spanish final, but if I suddenly decided to take a random Anatomy quiz, I'd probably do well. ^^;;;

Yeah... so I've been filling in the lists on my Baka manga account lately. These lists are a way to keep track of which manga you have finished, haven't finished, want to read, etc. I am not done yet as I have a good pile of manga that I've read but not sorted into folders because I am lazy... but I have filled in the stuff that is organised so I could get an idea of my reading status and whatnot.

So far, I have finished 506 manga/oneshots.
So far, I have started but not finished (either because of the scanlators or my own procrastination): 233

Due to my inherent laziness with organisation, I figured a more accurate assessment would be the approximate size of the folder on my hard drive...
Folder which contains stuff I have definitely read, I only put stuff in this folder when I finish the last page of something. "Oldies": 51GB
Everything I have downloaded but not yet read, mind you there may be a couple of duplicates. "Newbies": 83GB

Yeah. That's sad. Where did my social life go?

(Also something to note, my collection is about 90% BL. I am unashamed.)

Ah, the joys of attentiveness.

Yeah, so I was just sitting in front of the computer listening to music, but reading this awesome paperback novel that is so interesting that I can't seem to put it down. I was completely engrossed, getting to the bottom of the page... and then I absentmindedly reached forward to scroll down with the mouse. XD I was so into the story that I forgot it was in my hands and not on the screen.

[ mood | I'm le tired ]

My last few days in chronological order:

Class was meh. *bored*
Yay, free day! *couch potato*
Niece is sick, gotta wake up at some ungodly hour of the morning. Ugh, and then she threw up on my rug. *squick*
Woohoo, got my test grade back. 114% *happy dance*
Ugh, now I'm sick. And it's the day I have to babysit. Bleh. Random fever at 5 in the afternoon, queasiness, bathroom issues, blah blah blah all the way until I wake up covered in shit. *double squick*
All better, yay! *celebrates weakly because I have aches and pains all over from being sick*
Sister decided to start trying to set me up with her coworkers again. *unhappy face*

And since that last one happened a few moments ago, I have nothing more to add. Note, the fun roller coaster of good and bad, I swear fate is having some sort of weird yin-yang joke.

I have been reading HP fics with uncommon pairings lately and just a moment ago I started a Ron/Percy fic which dealt with Percy's 'betrayal' of the light side. Of course, I was only a couple of paragraphs in when my playlist started playing "Not One Of Us" from the Lion King 2.

Random amusing Spanish mistakes [15 Feb 2012|03:03pm]
[ mood | lawls ]

Yeah, so for some odd reason I suck at using ser and estar... and articles too, actually...

Actual excerpts from an assignment:
5. Yo soy doctor Ochoa y él profesor Mendoza.
7. La biblioteca a la izquierda de la cafetería, ¿verdad?
-and then later-
2. ¿Cómo está tu compañero de cuarto?
Está es enfermo
4. ¿Quién es no está en la clase hoy?
Yo no sé.

Yeah, so I forget to stick ser/estar in sometimes (lol, a sentence without a verb, how did I manage that?)... and then later I use both (lmao, now two verbs at the same time?) -- My teacher joked the other day, saying I was like, "Oh, I forgot to use a verb over there, I'll just put two in over here to make up for it." XD She's awesome, seriously.

Yeah, the test is tomorrow. I'm totally screwed. But at least I can laugh at my random idiocy.

XD I totally meant in the non-loli way, but oh well. Seriously, though, the slice-of-life stuff with an adult beings friends with a kid is awesomeness. Usagi Drop (kinda), FLAT, Super Lovers (although it is brief...), Barakamon, Yotsuba&, etc. are all way cool. Adult/kid friendship = <3
