Hi Internets! I’m not dead...just the internet at the host hotel was $30 a day (£15), and there was no way I was paying that just for 24 hours of internet.
Anyway, I have missed my flist and my friends! However, I had a pretty awesome time at Asylum, and that was just the start of my vacation! If I've missed anything major in fandoms or general need-to-know, please comment and let me know!
My Mom drove me up to the airport and we got there around 8:00. My flight wasn’t leaving until 11:00, so I had plenty of time. What actually wound up happening was my flight getting delayed for an hour and a half because of the thunderstorm that was coming through the area. We finally got off the ground and started my flight to the UK!
I had a snack, and then dinner was this lasagna meal with cake for dessert...and then yogurt and a muffin for breakfast. And tea. Lots of tea. I actually was able to get about 3-4 hours of sleep on the plane, thankfully. When I woke up we were about an hour from Heathrow.
I landed and got through international check in REALLY quick! I think it was because we were in a less used terminal. My mom and I landed in either 2 or 3 last year and it took FOREVER to get through! But this year, it was under a 15 minute wait. So, got through and went to the Central Bus Station to take the bus to Birmingham.
On my way, I ran into a SUPER cute boy from Dallas, Texas, who was visiting his cousin and aunt in… Glouster I believe. He helped me get to the bus station and we talked about why I was here. HAHA “I’m here for a convention!”
Since my flight was delayed, I missed the bus that I had planned on catching. So I had to wait for an hour and 15 minutes for the 2:45 bus to BHX. It was a LONG bus ride and not comfortable...but much easier to just sit there rather than have to take three different trains to the same place.
I finally got there! Met up with my roomie vanee, and our birthday buddy dullemarulle, and got registered for the convention. WHEEEE.
THAT went much better than last year! However, things were getting pushed back - surprise! ;)
After registration, we hung out in the lobby/bar area. I got fish and chips - and I mean, I got a fish! It was a whole thing! Met up with my awesome German friends - cologne_chick, ongiara, justfreefallin, legoline, lyxzen, and some others, because some of them were waiting for the wine/cocktail party to start.
I went and explored the dealers room. It was pretty much the exact same dealers that they had last year. I bought some Torchwood prints because YAY I have Torchwood pictures now! and bought a new coaster (well...two, a SPN and TW one) since my other one broke.
And we hung out in the bar while the cocktail party ended and we got to watch everyone walk by. I actually missed Lauren and Katie b/c they looked SO NOT like what they look like on the show. Lauren is absolutely BEAUTIFUL without the makeup caked on her face like she is on SPN.
The rest of the night was just relaxing and catching up with people I haven’t seen in a full year. It was REALLY great getting to see everyone again and just hang out! HAHA [Bad username: vanee] is my new International Plastics member! ;)
Next up? Saturday craziness or “Didn’t we go through this last year?!”
First day of the convention was craziness as expected!
It didn’t start on time, but they kept things going pretty well.
Doug was the master of ceremony basically, and he was a great entertaining guy. He introduced everyone for the “Welcoming ceremony” and then we went right into Jim and Sterling’s panel.
Jim and Sterling are just...incredible, wonderful guys.
We all <3 Jim, and he was just awesome. You can tell how much fun he is having doing these, and Sterling is just this adorable softie with this scary Gordon laugh! :P Jim joked about Bobby eating his dog “with mustard” and he didn’t like working with dogs. And Sterling kept joking that he was coming back. “Bring me back!” I’d totally want Gordon back.
Then I went to get in line for autographs. This is where the problem was for the con, I think. Horribly done. There were 4 separate lines, but...there should have just been ONE line so they can judge how many people are actually waiting for all autographs. But they got through the first 400 by lunch time. It was Katie, Lauren, and Travis signing autographs.
Um, Katie? Yeah, she spelled Jensen’s name wrong. “Jensin.” HAHA WOW. Not the sharpest tool in the box.
Lauren was drawing Bela stick figures with a smoking gun and $$$ signs, it was adorable. OMG I love her. LOVE HER. I’m so glad my personal feelings about the girls are pretty much the same. Once again, SPN using their female guest actors completely under their potential and just WRONG.
And Travis wrote W.hat W.ould B.uffy D.o? On my poster. Seriously, that guy is comedic genius! More on him later!
I just don’t get how EyeCon can have a very similar set up - even more relaxed b/c it’s just “you go when you want” and that can work out perfectly, and then what Asylum does takes FOREVER. I just don’t get it.
Anyway! The autos took over an hour, and I missed Sam and most of Chad’s panels. Chad’s panel was very similar to how things went at EyeCon. He spoke about his documentary and got some weird questions. “If Ash had to hook up with Sam or Dean, who would he choose” And you could tell that he was thrown off guard. He spoke about Andy/Ash (Thanks Gabe!) and said that he thought it was ridiculous that “people would take the time to write that stuff” but then he said “Ash would choose both.”
Then we broke for lunch...we hung around so we could keep our seats. I sent some postcards to my parents, and bought a photo op ticket for Katie and Lauren together.
Somewhere over the day I finally got to meet purplepheonix03, trueshellz, nyaubaby, wenchpixie, annemiek81, and iceandlime, and got to catch up with tinkabell007 (although nothing much other than just frantic waves to each other!), aditu_az, and tigressunicorn. If I missed you, let me know! There were people I wanted to meet and just NEVER found you! :( And some people came up to me to say hi and I either didn't get your LJ or real life name or might have missed it. But it was SO great to meet you all and say hello!
AJ was supposed to be after lunch, but he wasn’t arriving until late that night b/c he was filming CSI episodes. But he made it for the group photo op, which I was SO happy for, because I decided on that one, along with Katie & Lauren, and Sterling. Lauren and Katie are very sweet people. More on them later.
So the first panel was Travis’ panel. OMG HE IS HILARIOUS! He reminds me a bit of Gabe and his comedic panel. He stood up so he could move around and kick and punch, and talk about ninjas vs. pirates, and do some Buffy staking a vampire moves. HAHA He was just awesome.
Then I went for autographs with Sam, Chad, Sterling, and Jim. Coolest bunch of people EVER, I swear. Jim’s line was taking FOREVER because he was having conversations with EVERYONE - and was giving hugs, and skipped breaks and lunch JUST so he could get to everyone. Seriously, one of the coolest, classiest actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.
So, I went to see Sterling first. Man, LOVE HIM. He’s just...very articulate, kinda soft spoken, and often laughing. And has this deep laugh. He’s always smiling and is so happy. And he loved Gordon and getting to be on the show.
Then I went to get Chad’s auto and he was great, as always. The AC was broken in the autograph room, so everyone was REALLY hot - literally, this time, and one of our friends actually fainted from the heat. You could tell that Chad was a bit exhausted and blah.
Next, I went to Sam’s table. She looked up at me and goes “Wait….why do I think I've seen you before...” and I was all “We met at EyeCon and Chicago!” HAHA So Sam is definitely starting to place my face. And then she goes “What are you doing here?! You JUST saw us!” HAHA so I explained I was vacationing here and timed it with the convention. I asked what her future convention plans were, and she mentioned Dallas. I told her how great it was actually getting to HANG OUT with her at EyeCon and if she’d be attending either that or Chicago. She said yes to both, that she would love to go back to EyeCon especially. I thanked her and she said “It was great seeing you again, see you next time!”
Then we got into Jim’s line, which was slllooooowww moving, but worth the wait in every way. What a great guy.
I got up to him and he goes “Wait a minute, you look familiar!” HAHA and he goes “You’re just stalking me, aren’t you?” And I was joking around so I said “yes.” And Jim says, “well, you only need to stalk me from now on” ;) I asked if he got to take time off and go on vacation into London like he had mentioned at EyeCon, and he said he does and he is really, really looking forward to it. And he said “It was great seeing you again!” and I thanked him like 5 times.
LOVE that man. Kripke better NEVER kill Bobby.
I got back in time for the last 1/2 of Katie and Lauren’s panel. They were VERY funny together! They were insulting each other and picking on each other. Katie was saying how Jared will make fun of her walk when he is off camera, and then how when she steps up to her mark she does some “strike a pose” model stance, and then Lauren was making fun of her for that. I swear, every other sentence Katie was all “I’d kick their ass” or “that’d kick ass.”
She really wants to kick a lotta ass.
And they actually posed for photos, so I got some great ones of the two of them together:
Then, we had the group photo op! It was Sam, Chad, Katie, Lauren, Jim, Sterling, Travis, AJ, Steve Carlson, and Jason Manns, and it was SO FAST! EyeCon has spoiled me!
I walked into the room and Jim shouted, “HI RACHEL!” HAHAHA
I sat down in the chair and said, “everyone do something funny!” And all of a sudden it feels like everyone is touching my head. Apparently Jim had grabbed my ears and was doing something funny. And then Sam shouts to everyone, “Oh! I have an idea! Everyone put a finger on her!” And we’re all trying to do something when the guy took the picture. Sam shouted “But we weren’t ready!” but he assured her the photo was good.
OMG it was HILARIOUS.
We had another break for them to set up for the concerts and party, and it was all crazy. We were let in around 8:00 and Jason was performing first. MAN, I didn’t really tell until Sunday, but he has BULKED up. He’s apparently playing a homeless man in a movie, which is why he really does look like a bum with the beard and hair. You can’t even see his face after he has the hat on! Jason was great...I really think he’s been working on his voice, b/c it sounded even better than last year and just stronger and more powerful.
And then Steve came on! This was kinda weird to me, because I’ve heard him like 4 times and it’s always been just HIM. But this time he had a pianist with him and backup singers. I am going to be honest and say that I prefer it when it’s just HIM. Yes, there were audio problems on the stage and in the room, but you could barely hear his voice once he started to have others sing with him. I really like Steve as just Steve b/c that’s when you really hear his voice shine.
After Steve, we were all exhausted, so we headed back to the room and hung out for the rest of the night. Good times!
Sunday coming ASAP!
