tutorial -20- the tainted

For your referrence, this tutorial was made using PSP 8.

I found this really cool photo of Natalie, and I shrunk it down to 100x100. I noticed it became a bit blurry, so I sharpened the image twice (Adjust > Sharpness >Sharpen), then using the SMUDGE tool (Opacity 40, Hardness 40) I smoothed out the skin (and ONLY the skin).
> >

I took this gradient and I set it to SOFT LIGHT 100%.

I took this gradient and I set it to SCREEN 80%.

I took this texture, which is a variation of the original made by inxsomniax, and I set it to SCREEN 84%. As you can see now, some of the texture is covering her face. Using the Move Tool, I moved the topmost texture a bit to the left. Then using the ERASER tool (Opacity 11, Hardness 2), I erased some of the areas, so that the transition between the texture and the image looks smooth.
> > >

I took this texture, created by anon_chan, and I set it to SCREEN 100%.

I merged all the layers. I duplicated the base and I set the topmost layer to BURN 40%.

I added in some text.

I took this gradient and I set it to HUE (Legacy) 100%. Using the ERASER tool (Opacity 11, Hardness 2), I erased all the areas except those covering her face. And voila…

That turned out so pretty. I'm glad you didn't find it too confusing. Sometimes I'm worried I might have worded things wrong. :P

Thank you so much for this! That one you made is awesome. You can see my attempt at it. I didn't use the last gradient, as it didn't look quite right, but think it came out just as well without it.

Thank you again!

It's good that these can be used for PS7 as well. I have forgotten how to use that completely. Anyways, your icon looks gorgeous. :D

This was a wonderful tutorial. I used PS CS2, and fiddled with the last step and the saturation and it came out wonderful. (Of course, it might have just worked so well because Yagaren is so awesome :D :D :D)

Thanks a lot!

Re: hmm..it was hard for me
If you'd like help with it, I could maybe try to break that part down for you a bit.

Do you mean where it says "set it to SOFT LIGHT" or "set it to SCREEN"?.

Well if you have PSP 8, you should see a pop-up box with the heading "Layer - Raster 1" (the Raster number will change depending on what layer you're working on). If you don't see this box, click on View > Palettes > Layers.

First you gotta copy the gradient icons I posted, then you paste them onto your image. You'll see it appear as a new layer in that "Layers" pop-up box. Now in that box, there should be three sections - one that says the layer number (right side), one with an opacity number (should be set to 100 at first)(middle), and one with a blend mode (should be set to Normal at first)(left side).

For the gradient step, it's the opacity number and the blend mode that you change (the ones I indicated).

Hmm, I hope that helped. I sometimes even confuse myself.

This is so lovely! Here's what I came up with:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I added a one-pixel border around it, because.... well, I just liked it. Anyway, saving this to memories! It's by far the most interesting thing I've come across in a while.

Hello, I'm sorry that I write it here but I don't know how to contact you. You are the runner of _elite_icons_ and I was accepted by you. I was wondering why can't I post there yet?
