it is stupidly hard to concentrate - let alone write something that sounds even somewhat intelligent - when you have the pinky and the brain theme stuck in your head.

We lost a pij tonight. =(

Tom came home a few nights ago with a little ball of friendly feral pigeon fluff that had a compound fracture in it's wing. We tried to take care of it - I taped the wing up, cleaned the would, cared for it - making up special food and fluid, changing it's bedding and encouraging it to eat and drink a couple of times every hour... It came out of shock in our care and made friends with us. At least, I like to think so. It would peck away at my hand in a simulation of grooming, would listen attentively while i was talking to it and dance excitedly when I came near. (though to be honest, I don't know pigeon language. maybe it was just frightened... I like to believe it was thankful for the attention and love that keep it from dying on that cold night when Tom found it dying in the city...)

But vets suck. most of them would have had it put down straight away, even though it had a caring and loving home to go to, just because it was a random feral pigeon. plenty more where he came from, right?

Even the ones we sent him to, to ask them to clean and set his wing as best possible so we could give him a chance at a life, weren't willing to offer him a chance of survival - it was take him home to die of septicemia, or euthenaise. that's it. the proper options weren't even aired until we had agreed to killing him, and then it wasn't an offer but rather a bigoted opinion that 'if he had been a different breed' he would have been worth the effort.

most days i wonder why this world feels like shit.
days like today kinda answer that question.

I still feel guilty.

I spent two hours in a cold, damp and slightly rainy park last night trying to trap 2 bunnies that some useless git had lost, or more likely abandoned.

no luck sadly. outwitted by a rabbit. =(

These events lead to some interesting and truely screwed up information:
1) The RSPCA will only take injured animals. It is their opinion that trapping of healthy strays/pets is the responsibility of the council, depsite information on the local council website declaring that the RSPCA (and significantly NOT the council) have powers to deal with abandoned creatures, under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979.
2)The local council has no resources for the trapping of elusive once-were-pets. However they have graciously offered to take them off our hands if *we* can do the catching for them.
3) When rabbits have all the grass they can eat, they turn their noses up at vegies.

how exactly is it fair warning to say - before december has begun - "christmas is in seven days. be there."?

never mind the fact that we are going to be away... how am i supposed to do christmas shopping (let alone boil a pudding!) in seven days?

ahhh... family-induced-christmas-angst, how I have missed you. =)

It is amazing the things you learn while planning a trip to a hole...

for instance, today I learnt that I want a mini-pig.
