The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus

For F/F February + Black History Month:

The Stars and the Blackness Between Them (the cover art is so pretty) by Junauda Petrus was very powerful. After she gets caught with another girl, Audre is sent from Trinidad to her father's in the US. There, she meets his friend's daughter, Mabel.

I don't read book summaries in their entirety because they reveal too much. So I was surprised and sad to find out mid-story that Mabel had an aggressive form of cancer. Still, the novel had been amazing and so rich until that point that I decided to continue. Plus, it's not really my thing to dnf books. From then on, Audre supported Mabel as much as she could, and that's how they grew closer. ♥

Another tough topic is life in prison for Black people. Afua is on death row. Mabel read his book and it resonated with her, since they were both waiting to die, so she contacted him. Their friendship played a significant role in the story.

I would classify this novel as contemporary fiction more than magical realism, but there are magical vibes in it: traditional healing, strange dreams, and sometimes a little more than that...

The book is written in Ebonics. It has beautiful prose, as well as a few poems. I can't wait for more from this author.
