Without Reservations - Chay and Keaton

The Silvered by Tanya Huff

The Silvered by Tanya Huff was amazing, though darker than most of her other stories (except the Blood books, which were also quite dark). ^__^ She's always been a great writer, but her recent novels have had even more solid writing. This one-shot was published between Books 2 and 3 of the Gale Women trilogy and I can feel the similarities in her writing style, even though one is heroic fantasy and the others are urban fantasy.

Aydori is a country ruled by werewolves (werewolves in heroic fantasy, I love it!) and elemental mages. The Kresentian Empire is more oriented towards science and technology (it's got a bit of a steampunk vibe), and yet takes political decisions based on what the Soothsayers see. That's how Aydori ends up under attack and five female mages get kidnapped, while the sixth one and a werewolf go to their rescue.

This is the straightest book I've read from Tanya Huff. XD It was very good het, of course. And it's not like there wasn't any m/m at all: a few mentions here and there, as well as a lovely minor pairing late in the story. I also enjoyed the focus on the female characters, including the rather resourceful captured mages.
