AI7 Top 7 Performances

  • 15th Apr, 2008 at 9:45 PM
All right, this is the first time I'm doing this for season 7, because I've never enjoyed any of the performance shows enough to run through them. HOWEVER, tonight was a big fat exception, because tonight was EFFING INCREDIBLE. Maybe it's just because I loved the theme (not a huge fan of Mariah Carey, but her songs are awesome). In any case...

1. David Cook, "Always Be My Baby" - 10/10 - OH MY FUCKING GOD. OMG. OMGGGGG. I cried. It was just... gah. All right, I don't think he SANG the song that well, but oh my GAWD, the arrangement. The arrangement killed me. THE BUILD-UP! THE VIOLINS! THE EVERYTHING! And then when he teared up at the end for his brother, I pretty much died again. I was half-tempted to take a taxi to the Idol mansion just to give him a big hug, srsly.

2. David Archuleta, "When You Believe" - 9/10 - lol, wow, so I'm listening to the studio recording of Syesha's "I Believe" from last week, and the lyric "anything is possible when you believe" came on just as I was typing out the name of David's song. Anyway. Like Simon said, I would have put a million dollars on Archie choosing this song. I guess the whole inspirational songs thing works for him, so there's really no point in him changing things up. As for the performance itself, I loved it. It was a good way to open up the show. He looks so miserable, though :(

3. Syesha Mercado, "Vanishing" - 9/10 - Fuck the haters, I still love Syesha. She's beautiful, she's got an incredible voice, and she gives me chills every time she performs. I'd take her so-called disconnect with her songs over Brooke's so-called emotional connection ANY. FREAKING. DAY. I don't "Vanishing" was her best performance, but I think she sang it very well. I looooved the crazy run she did in the middle.

4. Kristy Lee Cook, "Forever" - 7.5/10 - Um, okay, when I put KLC here, I actually did a double take. Seriously, wtf? I can't believe I actually LIKED her performance this week. I'm going soft ;_; But honestly, I thought she did a good job. Like everyone said, I can definitely see her cover of the song being a country hit. KLC really does keep improving every week, which worries me, because I don't want her to stay any longer.

5. Carly Smithson, "Without You" - 7/10 - First of all, let me say that this is one of my favourite Mariah songs. I loved it when Kelly Clarkson performed it. I loved it when Leona Lewis performed it. I love Clay Aiken's cover of it. I really just love the song in general (though I've never heard the version Mariah covered). I think Carly started out well, and I agree with Paula -- I thought Carly did a good job softening her lower range in the right spots. However, the last 2/3 of the song was just Carly belting the same two lines over and over again, and as impressive as that was, it got a bit boring after a while. She was verging on shouting the song by the time she finished. But, bleh, it wasn't too bad, and I liked it, I guess.

6. Jason Castro, "I Don't Wanna Cry" - 6/10 - Er, sorry, but I didn't enjoy this performance. Though there were some redeeming parts (like his fals ♥), the majority of the song was just the same thing Jason does every week. Mediocre singing, "connection" (or lack thereof) with the audience, guitar featured in the instrumentals, etc. Personally, I don't think Jason deserves to make it past top 5. He's cute and funny, but he's just a one-trick pony with an average voice.

7. Brooke White, "Hero" - 4/10 - BROOKE WHITE FTL. Every week her presence aggravates me more and more. She needs to GO. Like Jason, she does the EXACT SAME THING EVERY WEEK, and 80 percent of the time, she doesn't even do it well. Take tonight, for instance. She's not a good enough piano player OR singer to take on a huge song like "Hero". Yeah, okay, she tried to make it artsy and shit, but it didn't work for me. She fucked up the tempo and kept getting ahead of herself. She fell apart in the final chorus, and the bridge was pretty painful to listen to. Sorry, but I expect better at this stage in the competition.

Who should be in the bottom three: Brooke, Jason, Kristy Lee Cook, with KLC leaving.
Who will be in the bottom three: Brooke, Syesha, Kristy Lee Cook, with Brooke or Syesha leaving.

I'm leaning more towards Syesha leaving. Why? Because a contestant I like always takes the place of the season number. Observe:

Season 1: Kelly Clarkson (second favourite)
Season 2: Clay Aiken (favourite)
Season 3: Jasmine Trias (favourite)
Season 4: Anthony Fedorov (favourite)
Season 5: Paris Bennett (second favourite)
Season 6: Phil Stacey (fourth favourite)
Season 7: Syesha (second favourite)???

I really, really hope this season breaks the pattern, but who knows. If Syesha leaves, I'll be royally pissed off. But there's always a chance... she sang a relatively obscure song and received "good but not great" comments from the judges :(
