“Well,” Ed began, chuckling and scratching at the back of his head, “I think we’ve discovered which of us is the better pumpkin carver.”

“I have an unfair advantage,” Al reminded his older brother, his tone apologetic. In order to carve his pumpkin, he had used a technique that Ed had given up—and for his sake.

He glanced over at Ed, searching his face for some sense of regret or longing, but he found none. Ed had given up his alchemy without a second thought, and he hadn’t held any sort of grudge against Al for possessing that which he’d freely tossed aside.

“Yes,” Ed agreed, gently nudging Al and smiling. “But even if I could still do alchemy, I think yours would be the best.”

Al took a moment to compare their carved pumpkins: his own was smooth and almost elegant-looking, with large eyes and an even larger smiling mouth. Ed’s, on the other hand, was the exact opposite—the eyes were uneven and the smile was all hard edges and crooked teeth; the nose was a rugged-looking gash in the middle of the pumpkin’s ‘face’.

It was perfect in its imperfection.

By that evening, Al had tossed his own carving away and had placed Ed’s out on the porch, much to Ed’s obvious surprise.

“Why’d you put that thing out here?” Ed demanded to know, as he gave the object in question a dubious look.

Al just grinned and answered honestly: “Because it’s perfect, brother. That’s why.”
