He is used to dreaming about the brown-haired, blue-eyed boy in red—this is not to say that he understands the dreams, but he is used to them, for they are practically a nightly experience.
Tonight, however, his dream is different: Tonight, he dreams of an unfamiliar beach and it’s strange and different, but it’s okay, because Axel and Xion are there with him (and they are the only real home he’s ever known). They are standing close to him, and the waves are playing at their feet, and even though Roxas does not know where he is, he isn’t afraid. They’re here together.
“There’s going to be a storm,” Axel intones suddenly, and Roxas starts, looking up at him and then at the sky. The sky is blue and beautiful and it stretches on this way as far as he can see. There are no dark clouds, and he smells nothing but the ocean—he does not smell ozone.
“It’s not going to storm Axel,” he scoffs, reaching for Axel’s hand and tugging lightly at it, forcing his companion to look down at him. “You’re crazy—there’s nothing but blue skies out here.”
“Storms can come suddenly,” Xion reminds him, reaching for his free hand and lightly squeezing. “They build, and then move, and there you have it: destruction, chaos, loss.” Her eyes meet Axel’s, and suddenly, Roxas thinks that he is missing something very important—thinks they know something that he doesn’t know.
He struggles against confusion—tells himself that he trusts them and that they’ll be with him forever, and so everything will be okay, somehow. He tightens his hold on each of their hands and takes comfort in the fact that neither of them lets go, and that both of them softly murmur, “We’ll be with you.”
He wakes in the morning, still burdened with the feeling of not-understanding, but by sunset, he’s with them again, and the dream is all but forgotten.
He discovers only too late – after Xion has left the Organization and after he realizes Axel’s answers are nothing but riddles and lies – that the storm from his nearly-forgotten dream is not literal, but figurative; he knows, however, that the aftermath will be very much the same: all that he has ever known will be torn asunder and scattered to the wind.
Axel reaches out to him before he leaves—some last-ditch effort, perhaps, to keep Roxas from heading off on a mission that practically screams ‘suicide’. The redhead tries to make him see reason, he supposes, but Roxas is done with this (all of it).
He walks away and doesn’t glance back; he doesn’t want to see the look in Axel’s eyes, and he doesn’t want Axel to see the look in his own (doesn’t want him to see that somewhere, deep inside, somethingnothing is breaking).
He thinks he smells ozone—thinks he sees clouds beginning to form in the midnight-blue sky.
Storm’s coming. And unlike what his dream led him to believe, he’ll be facing this one all on his own.
