The first time Jensen gets into a real fight, he is sixteen years old.

Jensen isn’t a fan of confrontation, but he doesn’t shy away from it either. He’ll walk away if he can, but he won’t hesitate to throw a punch if he needs to.

At fifteen, Jensen is too pretty. He knows this. His eyes are too big and his lips are too pouty and his hair is too blond. It doesn’t matter that he’s on the varsity lacrosse team as a sophomore or that he can throw a baseball like nobody’s business. People look at him and see one thing. Pretty.

This bothers him for a little while, and when he realizes that he’s gay it bothers him even more. But then he starts to grow up. He works out more and puts some muscle on his lithe frame. He starts to grow into his face and his too-big, too-pretty features, and by the time he’s a junior he’s pretty much over it. So what if he’s pretty? He is downright gorgeous and that is nothing to be ashamed of.

But it can cause problems. Case in point – Jensen’s first real fight.

His name is Doug Gordon; a senior with too much testosterone that never really got over losing the spot of team captain to Jensen, a lowly junior. Jensen does his best to ignore him, but irritation bubbles under the surface every time he opens his stupid mouth.

Jensen never flaunts his sexuality. Hell, ninety-nine percent of the student body has no clue that he plays for the other team, but still. People suspect it.

“Hey Ackles,” Doug growls out after practice one day. Jensen had verbally ripped him a new one out on the field after one too many bullshit moves, and he hadn’t been happy about it. “You wanna suck my dick?”

Jensen freezes, as do many of their teammates. They’re in the dark passageway under the bleachers – hidden somewhere between the field and the locker rooms, and Jensen curls his hands into fists. He slowly turns on his heels to find Doug right in front of him, nearly nose to nose, and Jensen glares at him.

“Excuse me?” Jensen asks, and Doug’s eyes flash.

“I asked if you wanted to suck my dick,” Doug repeats slowly. “Bet you’re real good at it, what with all the practice you probably get and all.”

“Right,” Jensen grits out. Their teammates circle around them, all hushed quiet. Jensen rolls his lips into his mouth for a moment and narrows his eyes. “Well, Doug. I’d love to, but unfortunately I left my magnifying glass in Bio, you prick.”

“You faggot,” Doug spits. Jensen doesn’t even see the swing; he just feels Doug’s meaty fist connect with his eye. The pain is vibrant and intense, and he can feel blood clumping in his lashes the moment before it blurs his vision. White-hot anger flares up in Jensen’s belly and he swings back, connecting with Doug’s jaw. The next moment they’re on the ground throwing blind punches, and Jensen’s knuckles scream in protest when a powerful punch connects with Doug’s nose.

Their teammates finally pull them apart but they’re still screaming at each other. Jensen spits blood into the dirt, yelling obscenities that even he can’t make out as Evan drags him towards the locker rooms.

Jensen’s teammates inform the principal that they all witnessed the fight, that Doug provoked Jensen and threw the first punch. Doug ends up getting kicked off of the team – he was on an academic probation anyway and coach was sick of his shit – and Jensen gets one day of detention.

He explains what happens to his parents and then goes upstairs. He stares at his bruised face in the mirror – at his swollen eye and bloodied lips – and he vows never to be ashamed of his too-pretty face ever again. He’ll wear it proudly.

Jensen’s teammates all come up to him at the next practice and tell him that Doug is an ass and that they wouldn’t care even if Jensen was gay. Jensen appreciates their loyalty, but he doesn’t answer the question they’re all so obviously dying to ask. Instead he just puts on his helmet and tells them to get the fuck on the field.

Doug ends up getting a dead fish hidden inside the passenger seat of his car, courtesy of one Jared Padalecki.

Lacrosse seems to get Jensen into trouble. He doesn’t exactly fit the bill. Varsity lacrosse players don’t wear such fashionable clothes. They don’t do the school musical in the off-season, and they definitely don’t look like Jensen.

In the middle of Jensen’s senior season, he goes to the mall with Jared and Chad one Saturday. They’re approached in the food court by Zack, a member of Jensen’s cross-town rival team.

“What’s up, sweetheart?” Zack says as he approaches the table. “Shopping for a new dress? Maybe a new shade of lipstick for that mouth of yours?”

“You boys sure seem to have an interesting fascination with my mouth,” is all Jensen says. He even gives Zack a little pout before pulling another fry between his lips.

“Fuck you,” Zack spits out, and Jensen scoffs. “Queer.”

Jared stands up at that, eyes flashing dangerously as his hands curl into fists. Zack laughs and his eyes flicker back to Jensen.

“Your boyfriend gonna fight your battles for you?” Zack asks, and Jensen’s stomach turns a little. Jensen is just starting to realize he’s never going to get over his thing for Jared and to have it thrown in his face hurts, even if it’s just an empty insult. He puts his hand on Jared’s arm and then stands up. He wipes his mouth with a napkin and then faces Zack head on.

“That won’t be necessary,” Jensen replies casually. He takes his sunglasses off of the top of his head and hands them over to Jared, who is still glaring at Zack with a fierce intensity even as he sits down. “Let’s go.”

“What?” Zack asks, finally looking a little concerned. Jensen smirks.

“Did you want to do this here in the food court?” Jensen asks politely as he rolls up his sleeves. “Such an audience. Or we could go out to the parking lot. Might get a little rough with all that asphalt though. Come on, Zack. I’ll even let you throw the first punch.”

“Fuck you, Ackles,” Zack spits out. He turns to walk away but Jensen surges forward and grabs the collar of his jacket.

“Fuck with me again and I won’t give you the option of fight or flee,” Jensen growls before pushing Zack forward. He just glares before walking away and Jensen lets out a deep, cleansing breath before dropping back into the booth. Jared and Chad share a look before Jared leans in slightly.

“You okay, man?” Jared asks. Jensen gives him a smile and feels a flare of arousal spark in his belly when he looks at Jared’s lips, ignited by the adrenaline coursing through him. He clears his throat and looks away.

“Fine,” he says honestly. “Could go for a milkshake, though.”

Now that Jensen is eighteen, in college, and has a crazy awesome boyfriend, he’s more open about his sexuality. Okay fine, a lot more open.

He doesn’t flaunt his sexuality, but he doesn’t hide it either. He just does whatever makes him happy, and more often than not that includes kissing Jared. And that’s what he’s doing, giving Jared mild little pecks while they sit with Sandy and Sophia at a table in the quad, when a shadow falls over the table and so rudely interrupts his afternoon tryst with Jared’s lower lip.

Jared and Jensen pull apart to look up at the new arrival. He’s a bigger, doofy looking guy with a beer gut and a ten dollar haircut.

“You guys need to take that shit indoors,” the guy sneers. Jensen raises an eyebrow. It’s been awhile since anyone has given him shit, and he’s never come across it since dating Jared. Sure, they’ll get the occasional dirty look and a disgusted scoff every so often, but that’s nothing. So Jensen just looks up at the guy curiously. Jared stiffens slightly but it’s out of anger, not fear, and he feels Jared’s hand curl in the back of his tee-shirt. Jensen just looks up at the guy with one eyebrow cocked. “I shouldn’t have to fuckin’ look at it.”

“Is your neck broken?” Jensen asks inquisitively. His tone is perfectly polite, like he might almost be concerned.

"What?" The guy replies. The disgusted look on his face makes Jensen want to laugh.

“I asked if your neck was broken,” Jensen repeats. He even plays idly with Jared’s fingers as he speaks. “Because if there was some defect in your redneck DNA that limited your mobility so that you could only direct your gaze at our table and not any other of the million and one places to look, then I might be inclined to apologize.” The guy cocks his head, looking slightly confused. “Ah, but I can see that you can look anywhere you want to, so you’re just a dick.”

Jared bites down on a laugh and Sandy and Sophia chuckle into their hands.

“I should kick your fuckin’ ass,” the guy says, and Jared sobers up immediately. He looks up at the guy with a slightly terrifying expression, but his arm is still draped casually over Jensen’s shoulders.

“I’d like to see you try,” Jared spits out grittily. Jensen squeezes Jared’s arm reassuringly and they both stand up. The guy looks over at them and his eyes linger on Jared’s muscular arms for a moment before he swallows thickly.

“You could try,” Jensen says amiably. “But you’ll fail, and then you’ll have to explain to all your dickhead friends why you got the shit beat out of you by a couple of queers.”

“So I suggest you walk away,” Jared adds in a slight growl. “And next time you turn your head. Simple as that.”

The guy looks stuck somewhere between fight and flee, and Jensen curls his hands into fists. He spots Josh and Jeff coming up behind him and smirks. Josh raises an eyebrow and then slings an arm over the guy’s shoulders.

“Hey Troy,” Josh says in an overly cheery voice. “What are you up to this fine afternoon?”

“Josh,” Troy replies. His eyes light up like he wants to drop to his knees and suck Josh’s dick right there. There’s nothing worse than a homophobic closet case. “About to kick these faggots’ asses.”

Josh’s eyes flash dangerously and he shares a look with Jensen. He slaps Troy on the back once and steps back to stand next to Jeff, whose expression is bordering on murderous.

“Oh, these faggots right here?” Josh says nonchalantly, sharing a look with Jeff. “That could be fun.”

“Yeah,” Troy replies. He looks excited, like he knows he can’t lose now, and rolls his sleeves up. “Let’s go.”

“Oh, fun to watch, we mean,” Jeff tells him. Troy’s face falls and Jared and Jensen share an amused look. “We don’t have anywhere to be. We can probably spare a few minutes to watch you get your ass kicked.”

“Because these faggots are our brothers,” Josh adds. He gestures towards Jensen with a smirk. “He was captain of his varsity lacrosse team, and his boyfriend over there? He can bench two-fifty without blinking an eye.”

“But sure, Troy,” Jeff says with a sharp smile, “Kick their asses.”

Josh and Jeff sit down at the table next to the girls, who are watching the exchange like the most interesting soap opera. Jensen and Jared just walk around the table and come to stand in front of Troy. They’re taller than him, and he looks up nervously.

“Fuck you,” he finally spits out, and shoots them one last glare before turning tail and walking away. Jared and Jensen chuckle darkly and then turn back to the table.

“Too bad,” Jared comments as they sit back down. “I really wanted to punch him in his fucking face.”

“Next time, baby,” Jensen says with a chuckle as he leans against Jared’s side. He looks over at Josh and raises an eyebrow. “How do you guys know that asshole?”

“He’s in one of my classes,” Josh replies bitterly. “Fuckin’ dick.”

“Are you guys okay?” Sandy asks cautiously. Jared and Jensen share a look and Jensen just pats her thigh reassuringly.

“If we got up in arms every time some asshole gave us a dirty look,” Jensen starts, “we’d never get anything done.”

“It’s their problem,” Jared adds as he wraps his arms around Jensen from behind. “Not ours.”

“But you know what does sound like a good idea?” Jensen says lasciviously, tipping his head back to rest on Jared’s shoulder. Jared raises an inquisitive eyebrow at him. “Going back to our room and having as much disgusting, sinful gay sex as we possibly can.”

“Seconded,” Jared replies automatically. He gets off of the bench and takes Jensen’s hand as he stands as well. “We should probably go do that.”

“Have fun, homos,” Josh says as he drapes an arm over Sandy’s shoulders. “Staying hydrated is key.”

Jared just gives him a thumbs up as he pulls Jensen in to kiss him under the sunshine.

Ooh, how I love the visual of Jared and Jensen standing up to that guy with Josh and Jeff next to them. That would be a really good time to run... Also, I love how, while Jensen (and the other guys) won't stand for it, he (they) don't go postal every time either. Like they understand that they have each other, so the rest doesn't matter. Awesome fic! :)
