House!

(Dusting off the ol' LJ, since it's the easiest way to reach some of y'all. Probably should've done this a while ago.)

So, for those of you that haven't heard, Rachel and I just bought a house in Somerville! We closed yesterday (Nov. 9th), but we need to do a bunch of painting and other sundry things (like finishing packing) before we actually move.

The move is planned for Saturday, Nov. 18th, and we're looking for as much help as we can get - the more hands, the better. We're buying pizza and we expect to have refreshing beverages both alcoholic and nonalcoholic on hand, as well, for when we finish up. To that end, any and all volunteers are *greatly* appreciated. (We're relatively set in terms of large vehicles, thanks to relatives, but if anyone wants to offer one up in addition to themselves, that's all fine and dandy too!)

If you're able and interested in giving a hand, drop me an email or a phone call or a whatever; details to be sorted out shortly.

And if anyone's keen on helping paint over this weekend - Nov. 10th-12th - or possibly over the week, that'd be helpful too, but what we really need are folks to help with the move.

Last but not least, we look forward to having folks over in the new place shortly after we move!

Bachelor Party Plans!

Bachelor Party Plans! This Sunday (6/26)!

Very last minute, but at least they exist. LJ seemed like a good way to reach a number of people en masse relatively quickly, as this has sort of just come together and my brother (who's planned much of this) didn't have contact info for my local friends.

I'd love to get a chance to see anyone and everyone that can manage to make it, though I suppose it being a bachelor party that mainly applies only to the gents, unfortunately.

Apologies for the short notice; better late than never, right?

(Oh, and for those who weren't aware, somehow... I'm getting married in, oh, 16 days. o_o)

OK, I had decided this one was kooky, and I wasn't going to bother.

Then I caved, and decided to see what it spit up. And was amused.

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose...

Found this quote a short while back, and I'd been meaning to post it for a while now.

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country...
Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the republic is destroyed."

President Abraham Lincoln, 21 November 1864.

This is most disturbing...

My bottle of Coke smells like bluefish.

There's a reasonable explanation (when the boss picked it up for me at my request on her lunch break from the store, it was put in the same bag as the fish for her dinner tonight), but still...

I tried washing the bottle. That helped some. *sigh* At least the soda tastes normal, but the smell is a little off-putting to a vegetarian.

Oh, and in other news...

So my mother (since the sites in question told her they couldn't guarantee shipping by Giftmas) had two of my gifts sent to me at my apartment. When I called to ask whether I should bring them home unopened with me tomorrow for her to wrap and put under the tree, she said that wasn't worth the trouble with, and I should just open them then, while on the phone with her. So I did.

I now have my very own copy of Michael Dirr's A Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, which is basically the landscape architect's tree- and shrub- reference.

And I also am now the proud owner of a good book and a Hard Cheese Starter Kit from www.cheesemaking.com. komos, that means once I find appropriate milk, I'll let you (and whoever else is interested) know. From what I'm told, though, making beer or other yeasties on the same day as cheese is not the best of ideas.

Trees and Cheese. Who could ask for more?

No longer too busy to think

I've finally (nearly) finished the chessboard I've been making (almost entirely with hand tools, with the exception of one bit that needed a dremel routering) for Rachel for Holidays. All that's left to do is a bit of wood putty in the gaps (needs to be bought tomorrow), and a coat or more of varnish/stain. I may let her pick whether it wants a darker stain, or clear varnish, since that may not (practically speaking) get done by tomorrow night to be wrappable.

Squares of cherry and black walnut, set into a pale basswood frame with a 1/4" brass inlay strip around the border.

It's come out quite well, and now that it's done (LJ-update managed to eat my midway progress post a few days back), I'm rather happy with it.

Birthday goal: Chess pieces. =)
