B-T Day in Question 2006 live report

mood: relaxedrelaxed

Sorry this is a little late as the past few days have been nonstop ^^
Happy New Year everyone...

The Mr, sakurakurakura, gacktisgod and I met up with Mimi in a bitterly cold Shinjuku, and then we made our way to Kitanomaru, the park just north of the imperial palace where Budoukan is situated.

We ran into cutekawaii and her friend Juri, whose son's hair was amazing ^_^

Part of the excitement for me was actually going to Budoukan, as it is a very grand building built in a traditional style. On the hill leading to the venue, food vendors were set up, along with the folks selling photographs from the previous shows and the bootleg poster guy.

The Mr and Mimi, who recently moved to Tokyo from Germany. She has a beautiful operatic voice and performed a song with Paul at the NYE event.

gacktisgod with speared meat.

On the way up the hill, the scalpers were selling the last of the available seats (it was SRO by the time it started). For kicks GiG told one she wanted something in Section A (the front rows of the arena floor) just to see what the price was. She was told to wait in a cue and eventually a yakuza-looking guy came over with some tickets comparable to ours at a ridiculous price. We laughed and went on.

We were running a little late to the venue, so I'm not sure if they let the FC cue up early for goods or not. I got in line, which moved quickly, but alas some items were already sold out. However we picked up about 25 pounds of goods for friends and ourselves and then we awaited the call to go in the hall (again, no special cue for the FC unless I missed it).

Flowers were displayed out front beneath the big DiQ banner:

One of the "benefits" of being in the FC is getting to buy tickets before they are on sale to the general public; however, if you live outside of Japan, FISH-TANK will hold the tickets for you, so you have no idea what you are going to have until you get there. Our tickets were actually all very good, I just had to decide where to sit (we had 2 sets of 2 after trading off some) -- the front of the 2nd balcony SW side (right between Atsushi & Hisashi) or on the 1st balcony SE side. I let the Mr & GiG take the 1st balcony tickets as it was close to the VIP's and GiG is much better than I am at ID'ing the various musicians & celebrities who come to DiQ, plus it was her 1st B-T show and I wanted her to be close to the action. They were seated not far from Genet (AUTO-MOD) and the trans countertenor the mr performed with on New Years, Selia.

Genet & Selia (from Genet's blog)

Gackt, Hyde, Sakura, Miyavi, Masami Tsuchiya, Issay (such a beautiful man!), and several pop/vk folks whose names fail me were seen in attendance.

Beneath the huge Japanese flag, the stage appeared to be constructed of a series of very industrial-looking steel pipes behind a scrim:

The hall was strangely half-empty while Sarah McLaughlin (?!) and some other non-notable music played. Finally it filled up right before 1830. At 1847, all went dark for a moment, and the strains of Fragile Article started. The four corners of the arena had big lights which created patterns on the ceiling, transforming Budokan into a gigantic kaleidoscope which swirled! It was an impressive use of the octagon-shaped space, and very magical! The pattersn were on the scrim as well, and I think the words DAY IN QUESTION were too. The band entered from the left, and the scrim came down as the "la la la"'s came to a close.

Almost immediately the lights came up and the band launched into one of my favourite songs, In Heaven! The song was fast and tight and Atsushi's voice was perfectly spot on, as if he'd recorded the song yesterday. As for clothes, Liz immediately gasped "Hisashi looks fine!" and he was dressed in a smart, fitted leopard print 3/4 length coat/jacket (probably the only man in the world who looks good in that print!), leather pants, boots, and a shirt unbuttoned enough to show his necklace- made of Atsushi's tengu mask (with cock and balls for a nose!) pendant, and all the rings the band has designed looped on the chain. His hair was the longest I remember it being in at least a decade, and pinned up above his left ear with a sparkling barette(!). His makeup looked very nice- gold glitterish lipgloss to match his gold-painted nails and lots of eyeshadow/liner, and of course the B-T high on his cheek. Atsushi's outfit was a burgundy corduroy jacket with ?leather lapels over a burgundy -it had a dropped waist sorta like a maternity shirt #^_^#- and very nicely fitted satin pants that reminded me of his Dolce & Gabbana suit he wore for Devil&Freud. He had many of the band rings on his long graceful fingers, and his hair was much shorter, almost as short as during 2004. His eyebrows were arched gorgeously and it looked like he had eyeliner on. Hide had on his lovely pea coat and I think wore the band jewelry around his neck on a necklace, Yuta was in a black suit, and Yagami-san wore a striking wide-striped black and white suit jacket and his perfect mohawk of course. Yagami-san's drums were sorta angled so he could face the center from behind Hisashi, so I had a great view of his playing all night long. The song was so much fun to hear live (no, no fanservice during the solo--), especially since the entire hall sang along with the chorus.

I didn't take too many notes during the show as I was enjoying it too much (and using my binoculars!) to fuss with writing, plus since it will be on TV I didn't spend too much time notating the lights and costumes, so my apologies if this isn't as detailed a report as I usually do. The stage was very minimal- completely made of steel bars with a crescent moon shape in the center arcing towards the right. Yuta and Anii were on platforms divided by an aisle, where Atsushi would often stand. There were rampways across either side of the front of the stage, and the guitarists took turns "visiting" either side of the hall.

The second song surprised me- MACHINE from my favourite album, Kurutta Taiyou. Imai's noise-assault was on full mode all night, and he ended nearly every song with long screeches and wails. Next was Just One More Kiss, complete with Atsushi's amusing spoken-word part in the middle ^^

Atsushi's first MC came- a slow, drawn out "Konbanwaaa" in his deep voice. He then said something too quick for me to understand, then growled "SEX," which made the audience cry out happily. The band then launched into a nice, slowed down version of SEX FOR YOU. Towards the Atsushi sang with his back to the audience and the mike stand pressed into his spine, and poledanced backwards! Very talented XDD!

Next was another of my old faves- J! I was half hoping a spotlight would shine somewhere on the audience and J would get serenaded in front of 15000 fans haha. Atsushi's voice was perfect- better than the recording- and he hit all the "Meeester J!"'s just right.

M.A.D came next and seemed very fast, but its such an intense song it was hard to tell. The band was very tight, and I enjoyed watching Toll's drumming here. After Hisashi played his solo while sitting like a pierrot with a lute, he rolled around on the stage! haha ^^ Atsushi's voice was very interesting, more trilly than usual, more like his solo style.

Next was Glamorous, a song I don't normally like too much, but I do love the lyrics. Hearing it live was much better, and Atsushi sang beautifully. the stage was filled with very bright white lights which recalled the lyrics and the pv.

One of the highlights of the evening was the performance of Tightrope, another one of my favourites. The performance I saw on the 13th Floor with Moonshine tour was so moving, and this one will be especially beautiful to see on the payperview showing. The cresent arc of metal bars was lit with tiny blue lights, and it looked just like the milky way climbing from the stage into the sky. I was reminded of the Tanabata festival ^_^ Atsushi sang in the center beneath the arc, then towards the middle of the song he slowly walked an invisible tightrope toward Imai. Just before he reached Imai, though, he went back to Toll's riser and hung off the side of it, swinging out like a drunk on a lamppost, singing up to the arc of stars. It was so beautiful. At the end he hung there still, then leaned his body back until the lights went down again, except for the blue arc.

Misshitsu was next! I was very happy to see this on the set lists because it is rarely performed, and I really wanted to see Toll and Yutaka's dub drum and bass style live. And the lyrics/melody of this song are so beautiful. Atsushi's voice was incredibly gentle and emotive, and the second "君の傷口に僕" was particularly stunning- his voice made a sound as if it were breaking, but yet it was still controlled. I thought this was one of the most heartfelt performances from Atsushi that evening...he knelt and sang the last of the song, and they added an echo to the chorus which made it even more haunting. As Atsushi remained kneeling through the ending music of the song, Hisashi approached him, making little tricks on his guitar after the last solo, which Atsushi sang several small moans.

Continuing with SIX/NINE, Uta was next. The energy of the crowd returned and everyone sang along with the chorus. Hisashi's vocal parts were spot on, and the music was especially powerful live. The lights were fairly bright and the tv cameras (which were fortunately not too intrusive) filmed a lot of the audience. Atsushi wandered over to stage right and let the audience sing "お前を愛しているのに"

Next was the surprise of the night for me- CHECK UP! Two Imai/Atsushi duet songs in a row! Imai's drawling cybervoice was amazingly cool in person, and he sang with one hand on his hip and the other pointing in the air a la LUCY, all while eyeing the audience with an air of Queen BiTchiness that made me laugh in admiration.

After that was Zangai, which I always wanted to hear live as its a very driving song. However the entire stage became a gigantic strobe light, with scores of very bright blinking white lights giving the effect of the band behind consumed by huge paparazzi camera flashes! I'm not sure how that will look on TV as it was quite blinding ^^ Instead of the tampura sound, Hisashi played a very high pitched electric wahhh. I think Atsushi started the song sorta crawling, I can't remember now, but he did let out 2 long screams at the end.

Next the room went completely dark, my poor pupils still reeling from the strobes, and then a soft pinkish-purple lit the stage and the very beginning of Long Distance Call began...my heart sank, as this song is so gutwrenching I wasn't sure how I could listen to it live. It was particularly sad as we had just found out that morning a friend had died very suddenly this week. The lights were so soft, changing as the song began from purple to white to green to blue. Atsushi sang the beginning holding the left side of his head, rocking back in forth. I couldn't quite see if he was clutching his hair or maybe pretending to be on the phone...during the chorus, he would look straight to heaven. Liz & I were in tears by the end, and Hisashi had a particularly long and wailing guitar-noise barrage at the close which lead into 極東より愛を込めて. I was never very fond of how that song sounded, but ever since I saw the Devil & Freud performance, I have been very impressed with how movingly Atsushi sings it.
His voice was extremely powerful in this song in particular, and he sang loud, impassionedly, especially during "ねえママ 抱き締めていて もっと強く!" He also repeated the "Nee, mama" quietly. Hisashi finished with a ton of squiggly noise and there was a short MC-- I think he said something like, Thank you for coming during this busy time of year, please stay until the end."
After the MC, there was a long intro of Hisashi scraping/sheer pure noise like a singing bowl that was most entrancing. This led into Kodou. The stage was lit in blues and purples, and it was performed beautifully. Atsushi quickly exited stage right, and the rest of the band followed once the song finished, and the scrim was lowered again.

There was a good pause before the 1st encore, with the audience chanting. Suddenly the room went completely dark and a SCARY white clown face on a black screen on the scrim as ENTER CLOWN began. As the music continued, you saw the image of an elephant on a ball, juggler's batons, and the batons with the elephant all turning on the screen and on the ceiling like a terrifying circus kaleidoscope hallucination. As the band reentered from stage left, Hisashi stopped and picked up those superbright blinking diode lights you see for sale for raves/cell phones!! He put one on his guitar and one on his hair. Then Kourin began, and all went dark again briefly as huge clockfaces were projected on the ceiling. I was very excited to finally get to hear this song live, as I missed it because we were late getting to the show last year =_= (and they started a little early!). Hisashi's guitar was extra swipey, and the song really recalled bauhaus live.

Toll then shouted out 1, 2, 3, 4 and Romance began. The stage was lit with dark pink lights. I love hearing this song live because Hisashi actually plays a counterpoint scale over the normal "romance" guitar line. Hisashi also waltzed in circles during this one (interestingly, he wasn't moving around a tenth as much as he did when I saw them last year...he only gave a few kicks and only crabdanced for brief periods of time, not during the wholllle show like last time ^^;). Hisashi also played harmonies over the ending notes.

Atsushi then gave his longest MC, which according to GiG was something like "its fucking (the word he used is closer to shitty, literally) cold outside and fucking hot in here, ? so I guess we'll have to play all night..please stay" and everyone laughed.
They then launched into Kagerou, which is very good to hear live.

Muma The Nightmare was next, and the crowd surged forward as if rushing to do battle XD This song was not one of my favourites on the album, but it is amazing live, and the performance is incredibly powerful. Atsushi's voice literally seems to sink into your very lungs, and the drumming is superb. Toll is incredible to watch. Atsushi always yells out "nightmare!" at some point in the song, and he caught us a little off guard because he waited almost until the end of the break in the middle to scream out "NIGHT!" and then give a long high scream that was very wraithlike! He then sang the rest of the song while holding his face and looking up and down.

The band exited the stage again, and there was a shorter wait for the second encore. The stage had no lights, then suddenly 15 or so open flames like torches came from around the metal bars, so it looked like there were very large candles on stage. The opening chanting of Jupiter started, and my heart was in my throat as this is my very favourite song and it is a dream of mine to hear it, especially at Day in Question. naked male cupids with bows & arrows against a field of stars were projected by the kaleidoscope lights over the ceiling, and then the entire ceiling filled with the image of falling white feathers against a dark blue ground, like the snow of angels' wings. Incredibly beautiful. Hisashi's guitar was especially noisy, and he made wailing noises all through the song. I was so enraptured by hearing the song I didn't even notice Hisashi had on a matching leopard print fedora until it ended!

The guitar wails led into Angelic Conversation (no silent night! ;-;), which is wonderful to hear live. I heard it last year, and its amazing how nicely Atsushi pulls off those high chorus notes perfectly every time. His voice has really come into amazing form over the years. Cutely Atsushi gave a little yawn near the end of the song, and again at the very end as he rested between the two risers.

Japanese-sounding guitar notes morphed into super spacey noises, then Sakura (another one of my favourites) began. Hisashi made what sounded like dental drill noises, and the ceiling was filled with a projection of concentric circles of light flowing outward, like ripples in a pool. Then sakura branches filled the ceiling, all pink and transparently gorgeous. The metal arc was filled with tiny pink lights. Atsushi dropped the scarf he had around his neck during the solo, and then he went and leaned over toward the right kick drum. There was a final MC, but I didn't catch what he said.

The stage was now all dark and little tiny white lights looked like distant stars as COSMOS began. This is one of my favourite B-T songs because of its very beautiful lyrics (like Koudou, but positive!). It is simply beautiful live. Hisashi did a little dance, swinging his hips side to side. Yutaka played a very cool bass solo, adding some effects to the notes, while Atsushi leaned into Yuta's riser and listened. The ceiling was filled with pink cosmos. There was no band introductions, but Atsushi blew a kiss and waved, Hisashi and Hide gave little waves, and Yutaka curtsied! XD Toll threw out his sticks and drum heads (one went impressively far over to the SE corner of the arena floor!), and then exited. The lights came up pretty much immediately, and everyone exited quickly.

It took us a while to regroup outside, as we had several people were to meet up with. While we were waiting on some folks, my husband made it outside and introduced me to SELIA and Genet, and we stood in the freezing cold talking with Genet (who was shaking it was so cold, but they wouldn't let us back inside). He invited us to come to AUTO-MOD's Dark Castle event and gave us flyers. Paul told him we went to Gunma the day before and he laughed, and he asked about where we lived in America and asked about our next visit. I am always impressed at how I can end up in rather longish conversations knowing very little Japanese and the person speaking to us knowing very little English. Genet posted some pictures from the afterparty in his blog:

AUTO-MOD, Selia, Yagami Toll, Issay

Genet and Atsushi

It was a nice dream come true to be at a Day in Question, and see old friends and meet many new ones. It is very much like a family reunion for many fans, and a wonderful start of New Years celebrations.

I will write more about our trip soon...I was very honored to meet so many talented and beautiful people. GiG recorded the mr's performance, and I will post pictures of it too. Selia is a very talented, sweet person and I look forward to seeing him perform again. Here is a little preview pic from the New Years eve party, of the mr and Selia on harp:

In the VIP section?? I was keeping a pretty hard look out for Gackt because I know he's been to shows before, but I didn't recognize a single one of them! But I think....DJ Ozma was there? Or someone with similar hair.

Anywei I remember Acchan saying the thank you for coming out during such a busy time blah blah at the beginning, right after Konbanwa.

Gackt was toward the back with Hyde and Sakura I think; I didn't see them myself because I was seated above that area, and honestly I don't know what Gackt looks like these days so I probably wouldn't recognize him...he's quite the chameleon.

...that makes sense, about the MC. I didn't keep very good notes this time and was trying to recall from memory ^^;

Oh God, thank you for a wonderful report. It gave me chills and I so wished to be there. They were playing so many of my favourite songs (I think I would cry too during Long Distance Call) I'll comfort myself with the thought of the broadcast of this concert. And I think I'll have to be on the next Day in Question - even if I have to rob some bank :P

=D! I'm very happy for you! I guess it was a wonderful experience and I'm glad you all had so much fun.

I squealed in a hideous high-pitched tone when you mentioned Sakura was there (hahaha) but right now I've recovered my normal voice pitch and all, and I almost don't look like a hopeless fangirl. Almost. XDD

I've always had this idea that Genet is an extremely cool person, and I'm glad to read your report and confirm it. ^_^v

I wonder why they chose to sing that song, it seems to be such an odd one for the fans to pick! It's probably some joke between them and J haha.
