Books as far as the eye can see

I just finished Collapse )

I'm pretty sure my next book will be Bitterblue (I finished Fire like five minutes before I started reading Ashes of Honor), but after that I'm sort of at a loss (at least until Dark Star comes out in October). Therefore, a book poll!

Which of these books/series I'm considering would you recommend?

Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer - I keep hearing the name a lot, but I have no clue what this is about. Except I read the blurb on GoodReads, so I should know. Something about magic?
Bartimaeus Trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud (The Amulet of Samarkand) - I've started the first book, but I haven't made it past the first couple of chapters.
The Lunar Chronicles, by Marissa Meyer (Cinder) - The idea of fairytales rewritten as sci-fi/fantasy appeals to me, but there's something about the cover that puts me off.
Divergent Series, by Veronica Roth - Is this just people jumping on the Hunger Games bandwagon? Or actually good in its own right?
The Giver Series, by Lois Lowry (The Giver) - I've read good things on GoodReads, but I don't feel that the site is always to be trusted and I haven't heard anyone talking about it elsewhere.
Lorien Legacies, by Pittacus Lore (I Am Number Four) - I get the feeling this series might skew too young for me to really enjoy it? But I'm far from certain.
Harmony, by Project Itoh. - Bought it on a whim because the premise sounded interesting. It's been a couple of years now and I haven't even picked it up.
The Wind-Up Girl, by Paolo Bacigalupi - Enjoyed Shipbreaker okay, but I haven't gotten far on the sequel. Should I really be starting a separate book by the same author?
The Princess Bride, by William Goldman - I've been meaning to read this for ages.
I have another recommendation for you! It may even be a book for grown-ups!

Since Downton Abbey season 3 premieres tonight, I'm gonna cap/rewatch the Christmas Special now. Yay! New TV!

Next item on the To Buy list

So, I bought the dark blue Guide Vogs and I kinda love them a lot. A bit on the small side, but a few hours wear around the house helped a lot (can't wear them out of the house yet. The ice may have melted, but I'd freeze my toes off).

Next on the agenda: a camera bag! I have one of the usual nylon thingies, but I kinda hate it a lot. It's bulky, cheap-looking and not versatile at all. I want something that doesn't look like a camera bag, but will still protect it and be comfortable to wear for hours on end. I know, should be easy, right؟

In other news, I've been watching way too much TV. Thoughts on a few things:

In sickness and in...well, just sickness, really,

Got sick last week and while not the most fun thing in my life, I'm pretty happy it happened last week when there was still time to get all better by next week. Because next week I start my three week vacation! Woohoo!

It turns out that once the work week was over (and believe you me, it needed to be over about three days before it actually was over, but I didn't have the luxury of taking even one day off) all I wanted to do was bundle up on my couch and create weird crap in Photoshop. So that's what I did. And then I figured I should put it somewhere so I got myself a Tumblr. THIS IS WHAT SICKNESS HAS DONE TO ME, DON'T JUDGE. It's here:

Let me know who you are so I can follow some more people (I only added a few I recognized either through name or icon).

(Tumblr is weird, y'all! I hardly had any people I was following or that were following me, but people still "liked" my posts and stuff. How does that even happen? Tags?)

But enough about fever-induced delirious episodes that lead to Unwise Decisions, what I'm really here to talk about is BOOKS. I'm going to read so much on my vacation you don't even know! (Mainly because I'm going to the Canary Islands and I'll be offline/without TV for the duration.) So what to read? Collapse )

Two things of utmost importance! (to no one but me)

Item the first: I'm in desperate need of an .flv converter, so if you've got a rec, I'd love hear it! Just about any output format will do, as long as it's standard for VirtualDub, so avi, mpg, wmv. Not Quicktime, though, because that will just cause a whole host of other problems.

Item the second: I've become reobsessed with Minesweeper, but I feel like the game has gotten a lot easier. Easier to open, easier to solve. (But I'm much slower than I used to be. My fastest time on my old computer was 118 seconds. Now it's 173. I think...) I have to know if I'm just imagining things, so a poll!

Minesweeper - easier or not so much?

Still hard as hell
I have no idea what you're talking about, but I must have my TICKY BOX!

Operating system

Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Pre-XP Windows

(Most useless poll in the history of LJ polls, Y/Y?)

Long post is long

I've hardly read a thing since early June. Haven't finished a single book, actually, which is kind of depressing. My current subway read is Rosemary and Rue by seanan_mcguire, which is perfect right now because I find it so engrossing that I can just pick it up anywhere and remember exactly what's happened and what's going on. I really enjoy the world-building, the characters are intriguing and I'm even feeling kinda 'shippy about it. (Maybe it's just because I know she watched VM, but the first scene with Toby and Tybalt reminded me so much of this one from the pilot.)

I'm not even half-way, so no spoilers please!

But even though I'm enjoying the book and the subway is the only place I'm reading right now, I'm still thinking of getting a smart phone so that I can watch My Stories (not only on the subway, but probably there too. What can I say, I'M OBSESSED!). Anyway, I wanted to ask for recs, does anyone have any? The ones I'm looking at most are:

  • HTC Legend. The leading contender right now. Pluses: uses Android, fairly big screen for its size (and I can't really buy a bigger phone because my hands are tiny), REALLY PRETTY ALUMINUM CASING. Minuses: Wrong aspect ratio (would prefer 16:9), still kind of too big (but comfortable to hold, which mitigates it).

  • iPhone. Do I even need a link? The one that started it all, but I've never been a fan of iProducts. The only reason I'm even considering it is because I figure they've had a few generations to work out the kinks. Pluses: Lots and lots of apps probably? Minuses: My feelings about iProducts in general. Not to mention I'd probably have to install some sort of software and that ways lies madness, usually. Still the wrong aspect ratio.

Poll #1592687 New Phone!

Which phone should I get?

HTC Legend
I have a rec that I'll tell you about in the comments!

Speaking of my current obsession, here's what I've watched lately:

I watched a couple of episodes of Tokyo Juliet, but it seems it was more of a melodrama (the title should have clued me in. What can I say, I'm kinda dense sometimes) and very much Not. My. Thing.

Collapse )

I'm rewatching Goong! I'm not even sure how it happened. Yesterday I woke up really early (too hot to sleep) and I just suddenly wanted to see if the 'ship development on the show was as good and as satisfying as I remember it being so I cued up the first episode. I'm currently watching episode 13.

Can I just say that rewatching Dramas is The. Best. Thing. EVER?! And can I also just say that Alt+Right Arrow (Skip ahead 10 seconds) is my new favorite function in VLC Player? Trust me, I use it wisely and I use it well.

Time to watch another South Park episode three freakin' times. It's not like I haven't already done this twice today. UGH TIMES A THOUSAND!

Summer is for catching up on TV - old and new

For some reason, May seems to be a big reading month for me. I read 25 books in May, but when June rolled around, my reading mojo started failing me, so instead I turned to Kdramas. I just finished Coffee Prince, so Personal Taste, here I come!

But that's not really going to occupy me for long, especially not at the rate I'm going. Therefore, A POLL!

Which of my unwatched DVD sets should I watch next?

Breaking Bad s1
Carnivàle s1-2
Deadwood s1-3
In Plain Sight s1-2
Secret Diary of a Call Girl s1-3
Shameless s1-5
The Tudors s1-2
You should buy the show I'll tell you about in the comments instead.

Screw those, instead you should be rewatching:

Annual Farscape rewatch FTW!
Rome - because everyone need a regular dose of nudity and carnage
Twin Peaks. Dwarfs. Log ladies. Pie. What's not to love?
Veronica Mars (and of course the only reason to get through season 3 is to finally finish capping it so you NEVER have to see it again.)
The West Wing. And hey, maybe this will be one of those rewatches where s5 doesn't make you homicidal!
Something else that I'll tell you about in the comments.

That's right, RADIO BUTTONS. Ticky boxes are for sissies.

Now that everyone else is finishing up their 30 days meme, I figured I'd start on mine. Though since I don't post often enough to finish this until 2012, I'm gonna do a few at a time and pretty much when I feel like it instead of in every entry. Collapse )

So, I was paying my bills the other day, and I started wondering what it's like elsewhere. I can't imagine not having e-billing, giro payments, and online banking in general. Plus, paying all your bills in one go at the end of each month makes me happy. But I get the feeling that the US is still stuck in that same old "check-is-in-the-mail" archaic bill-paying that was the norm when I lived there twenty years ago. Therefore, Collapse )

Speaking of bill-paying, I'm only a few weeks away from being completely free of credit card debt, so of course I'm looking at ways to spend all that extra moolah. And I think I found it! I'm leaning towards this one, though to be honest, it's more because it comes in a pretty light blue color than for the battery life. Does anyone have any recommendations? Words of wisdom?

I think my eReader purchase has already paid for itself, because I'm reading more books than ever. Since the beginning of May alone, I've read 15 books. 15 books! I didn't read 15 books all of last year! (Granted, it's been mostly chick lit and easy fare, but still!)

Except, reading all these actual books instead of fic has made me realize that I've probably averaged about 100 books a year, just in fic. So I'm not reading that much more than usual right now, I'm just reading other things.

αΩ | ♋ | ugh

(no subject)

Even though I woke up more than ten hours ago, I still haven't rid myself of my morning sluggishness. Of course, this may have something to do with staying up all hours of the night, hemming trousers of all things. Yeah, I don't even know why I felt that that was something I needed to do at two am, but whatever.

And then I spent the day translating The Colbert Report, which I'm not convinced was the greatest of ideas considering how ineffectual my brain is today, but it's not like I had a choice. It's kind of fun translating the global edition (the credit word is "globallsy" in case you're curious), none of that censoring nonsense, so those "fucking squirrels" remained intact. =)

After almost 20 days of keeping track of TV episodes (new episodes only. Apparently I made this decision at some point, I'm not even sure when), I've averaged about 6.5 episodes a day. I'm pretty freaking impressed by that since I don't feel like I've been watching all that much TV. Of course, once I start marathoning any of the many many MANY shows I plan to rewatch, that number will go down. I think. I should probably never underestimate my powers of television watchage.

So, I just finished watching all of Titus (which I'd translated a few episodes of, but hardly seen any of the rest, as I discovered) and now I can't decide what's next. So therefore, a poll!

Poll #1333901 Run my life

What new-to-me show should I watch?

Generation Kill
The Mighty Boosh
Queer As Folk (US)
Sons of Anarchy
Stargate SG-1
Touching Evil (UK)
True Blood

For crying out loud, just finish something already!

Billable Hours season 2
Chuck season 2
Dexter season 3
Friday Night Lights season 2
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 3
Keen Eddie season 1
Legend of the Seeker season 1
Merlin season 1
Oz season 1
Profit season 1
Regenesis season 4
Spaced season 2
Terminator season 2

Also, I finally uploaded a bunch of new icons. I've been making loads lately (I have a lot of spots to fill), but it wasn't until this weekend that I felt I actually got some I could use. I hate losing my icon-making mojo like that, because the only way to get out of it is to work through it. And there's nothing worse than making sucky icon after sucky icon, thinking "what if they never stop sucking?". Whatever, they're uploaded now, and maybe I can start with a clean slate.

Oh man, I was really out of it last night when I posted the picspam (no wonder, it was 4.30 am). I forgot an entire panel! And I even removed the network logos from the caps and everything (from PLAID! Plaid is evil), but then I forgot! And now it just seems silly to go back and add it.

I've gotten my old computer up and running, strictly for capping, so I've been doing some of that:

αΩ | Π | bluth 'til the end

ITEM THE FIRST: Strike almost certainly over (unless the members vote against the recommended action, which I find unlikely); showrunners returning to work on Monday.

ITEM THE SECOND: I basically just copied my cap posts from LJ and made a page on my site instead, listing all the caps. Probably a smarter alternative, primitive though it is.

ITEM THE THIRD: For those who use my galleries (or anyone with a fascination for clicking things), Collapse )

ITEM THE FOURTH: I meant to go to bed two hours ago, so here I go.
