just when you think you have nothing to post about...

...along comes something that will guarantee at least a couple of posts over the coming weeks.

Rest assured, I will, at some point, be begging for votes for my Lost Cause of the Day ™.

A few days ago, I started a new comm. I'd been toying with the idea of having someplace to post miscellaneous caps for a while now, but I didn't know in what venue/format. Finally I decided that since it's just for me anyway, I'd just create a comm and keep everything on LJ, so I did:

acapaday

No specific theme or fandom, just caps I like. Or characters I like. Or 'ships I like. Basically, things I'd like to see show up on my flist on a daily basis.

Meme on a Saturday afternoon

Stolen from cal_turner:

List all of the television shows you have on DVD, no matter how obscure or embarrassing. Even if you only own one season, list it. Let's see who has what!

#1-9
21 Jump Street (seasons 1-3)
30 Rock (season 1)
4400, The (season 1)

Collapse )

Also, I just finished Being Human, and I started capping as I watched with the second episode, so here are those caps if anyone's interested.

I upgraded to Firefox 3.6 the other day, and I love the personas thing. Right now I'm using the Windows 7 one because I love the colors, but I'll probably switch it before too long to something else.

Since I'm not making icon posts any more, I'm also not getting any feedback. And sometimes I miss it! So I participated in an icon meme:

Personally, my biggest problem with my icons is lack of originality. I keep iconing the same caps over and over (I just want an icon I love from a cap I love! But still - BORING). I feel like I'm never doing anything new, just the same old thing over and over (with varying results).

I'm sick. And it's like the worst week ever for me to be sick (pre-EMA programs with short deadlines that have to be done immediately), but I'm still staying home tomorrow to work. May not be the best for getting work done, but I need to not be at work when I'm feeling like this.

I thought I'd find myself some downloads of the new Emma mini series and really just wallow in my misery.

Two things I've loved lately:

  1. LJ's Note feature. I used to have the Greasemonkey script that basically did the same thing, but with this feature it doesn't just work on one of my computers, but all of them, and any other I might use. Score!

  2. VLC Player. Now, I know everyone's been raving about this player for years, but I've always preferred Zoom Player (for its playlist function, mostly). Well, I finally found something I love it for: IT REMOVES REGION ENCODING ON DVDs!!! I can switch between region 1 and 2 with impunity! This is so awesome, I can't even tell you. Now if the capping function was only a bit better (though the frame-by-frame stepping thing has already improved it by a factor of a about a million!) (Caveat: According to VLC developers, they can't guarantee that it removes region encoding, but it'll try!)

The season of giving

You guys are impossible to shop for, but I think I found something you'll all enjoy:

Merry Christmas, flist!

(In case you're wondering what the heck I'm on about, I adopted a polar bear through WWF for you all.)

Between the polar bear and my permanent account charitable donation going to the Snow Leopard Trust I started feeling guilty about neglecting my fellow human beings, so I also joined Amnesty International and made a couple of more loans at Kiva.org.

The more I loan through Kiva, the more I like it. And today I discovered lending teams, which I think is an awesome idea. You don't lend as a team, but your individual loans can go towards any of the teams you're a member of. At first I was disappointed that there was no LiveJournal team, but then I found the Fandom! team, which is even better! (And now I'm completely curious about who the members are.) If you're a Kiva lender, you should totally join.

And if you're not a Kiva lender, what are you waiting for? The best part about it is that you can make the same money help a bunch of different people since you get it back, it's only a loan. And if you're tired of lending, or if you need money, just withdraw the funds instead.

I've become (re-)obsessed with online games. Mostly puzzle games. Some of my favorites from the past few weeks:

  • Word Bubbles. Not at all a puzzle game, but a word game. poshcat linked it last week or so, and I've been playing it daily since. I LOVE THIS ONE.

  • Atomica. This is a lot like Clines (which came in real handy when my internet was down at work the other day).

  • Tower Builder. I was obsessed with this one a month or so ago.

So, anyone got any online game recs? Time-waster recs, if you will.

So, dianora2 had this meme.
1. Post about something that made you happy today even if it's just a small thing.
2. Do this every day for a week without fail.
3. Tag 8 of your friends to do the same.

Happy Day 1: I set up my new work computer today, and thanks to the replies in my last post, it worked like a charm! Oh my god, having all my passwords, my extensions, my Clippings, my autofills right there at my fingertips in a few seconds flat? HEAVENLY. And then I spent the afternoon translating The Office (season 1), and watching/proof reading Dead Like Me and Monk. It was a pretty damn good work day, let me tell you. The boss even brought in some pastry for the afternoon coffee tea break. =)

I'm not tagging anyone, this is more to force myself to post every day for 7 days straight. Let's see if I can keep it up!

This is turning into a bad habit

Question!

Does anyone know of a Firefox extension that saves all your extensions, passwords, etc, either into a file, or somewhere online? I could have sworn I found somthing like that a year or so ago, but right now I can't even think of what search terms to use.

I'd just really like to make getting a new work computer as painless as possible.

Tissa linked Stickies and I'm already in love. For the longest time, I haven't been using any type of paper to take notes, and my memory just isn't up to storing all this short-term info I've got to retain for an hour, a day or a week. I've tried Google Notebook, but opening a web site is just too work-intensive for something as simple as writing down a phone number. This application is just perfect.

I'm making to do lists all the time, saving often-used text (not the ones I use online, though, I've got Clippings for that), and I think I'm even going to start making post-its for birthdays, since there's a "sleep" function that means you can have a post-it appear yearly, or monthly, or weekly. There are also alarms and all kinds of other fun stuff.

Here's a chicken-or-egg conundrum for you: Am I feeling lacklustre about TV right now because I don't have time to focus on it because work is sucking up all my time, or is TV actually lacklustre and thus leading to me getting even more caught up in work than I otherwise would? Who knows, but I can't say anything's wowing me right now. Collapse )

Also, I am an episode and a half away from finishing my complete rewatch of The West Wing, Collapse )

Love is in the air

I haven't posted in over two weeks, and I feel less and less inclined to do so with each day that passes, so right now I'm forcing myself to post something. Might as well be something useful, right? So here's an update on my Extensions=love post, which I have reposted in full, with new extensions in burgundy.

Other than that, I've mostly been watching Australian reality shows, which are awesome right now.

brand new religion

After my last post I was completely embarrassed and at the same time, perversely proud to notice that the episodes I listed as having watched since the previous post amounted to 87. In NINE days. And over the next 24 hours I watched another 13 episodes, bringing my total for those ten days up to an even 100 (ten of which were Collapse )). All this while working full-time (but not very hard, I must confess), having at least two game nights with friends and reading tons of fanfic. I'm not sure how I did it.

But considering my resolve to watch at least the first seven seasons of The X-Files before the movie premieres (which is August 1st here, giving me an extra week), I'm hoping I'll stay in this strange time vortex for just a little while longer. Right now, I'm on 2x10, and I'm hoping to finish seasons 2 and 3 before the end of the week.

Also, I'm thinking I should cap some episodes as I go (because even though there ARE caps for most episodes, the quality is sadly lacking), but I can't really figure out which ones to cap except for Paper Hearts, so any suggestions/requests would be welcome.

crackers4jenn's recent icon post made me remember this set of pictures, so I set about making myself a wallpaper from the cover (now that I can put it into rotation!). The fruit of my labors, if anyone's interested:
