So, today is the day we find out if there's going to be any more TV this season, huh? To be honest, I don't know quite what to think. On the one hand, sure, the terms are better now in that they include online content AT ALL, but a 17-24 day grace period when nothing is paid to the writers? In Internet time, that's aaaages.

And the way the AMPTP has been acting? I suspect that they've been going around shouting about the strike being over so that in case their deal isn't acceptable to the WGA members, the AMPTP can claim that they're being unreasonable. Just because they were offered anything at all. I'll be happy if the writers find the terms sufficient, but if they vote to continue the strike, I'm not going blame them for it.

PS. Looks like we'll have our answer in half an hour. Or rather, 48 hours.

Finished capping Atonement. And there were a few caps I just had to picspam, but for once I didn't go overboard. Collapse )

Good PR and bad PR

For the longest time, I've been pulling for NBC. They're the underdogs of the big four, they seem to be more willing than most to foster good shows and they do have some great programming. They're pretty much the only network that I've ever felt some modicum of affection for (with ABC and CBS I just don't care and with FOX there's outright hate), but during the writers strike they've eroded that goodwill and the last bits crumbled today when I read that they sacked the entire writing staff of Days of Our Lives. Wow, what TOOLS.

So, apparently this is happening. Hmmm, I'm not quite sure what to think, because I doubt many - if any - shows will be able to regroup enough to be able to put out any more episodes this season anyway. And I know Bryan Fuller has already said that there probably wouldn't be more episodes even if the strike was resolved soon. But still, good news for the summer fare, right? If it works out, that is. *crosses fingers*

Considering my own fannish status when it comes to FNL (which is to say: virtually non-existent), I'm surprised I haven't seen the more active fans mentioning this. Again, a rumor, but it made me hopeful that maybe we'd get other early releases. Personally, I'm practically drooling at the thought of Pushing Daisies DVD caps.

Speaking of DVD caps, some new uploads:

Little Voice

The West Wing
7x14 - Two Weeks Out
7x15 - Welcome to Wherever You Are
7x16 - Election Day Pt. I
7x17 - Election Day Pt. II*

*the caps haven't finished uploading quite yet, so they're not there right at this very moment. DONE!

Things I have learned today: when your eyes are already irritated, capping Election Day Pt. II does NOTHING to help alleviate the situation. In spite of this, I think I'll be continuing to cap the rest of season 7 for the next few days. Just not right now because I prefer being able to see when I cap. What can I say? I'm quirky that way.

Sometimes, 100x100 pixels are not enough to convey all that you want to say

This is not good. I mean, yeah, I'd basically given up on this TV season, but now I'm starting to get really nervous about next season.

You know, I'm trying to keep a positive attitude, but this year has just been a big ball of SUCK so far. I've gotten sick twice, I have Family Drama happening (though this is a reoccurring source of Family Drama, things seem to be coming to a head right about now), one of my closest friends has had to be referred to a specialist because she may have a congenital heart defect, I've had not one but TWO video files (both rush jobs) containing glitches, making me miss (or possibly miss, depending on what tomorrow brings) deadlines, and I already feel like I'm falling behind on my reading.

On the other hand, in a fit of self-pity I ordered Atonement the other day. It's coming out on DVD on February 4th. The next day sees the release of both the complete Slings & Arrows (which is why I haven't ordered any of the individual seasons yet, even though I had planned to) and The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, which I'm curious about despite my Brad Pitt apathy.

Is there anything else particularly awesome happening soon? Goodness knows I could use a pick-me-up or twenty.

I'll be there for you...or not.

  1. Tonight, I made several icons I like in the same sitting, and I'm thinking this might mean I'll finally be able to get back to those requests. Which I, contrary to what one might think, haven't forgotten, I've just sucked in the icon-making department in the past few months.

  2. I've been rewatching Friends and I'm finally up to season 5 - my favorite. Which I've already rewatched once this year, but that didn't stop me from looking forward to it all through seasons 3 and 4. So far, the things that bugged me about the show towards the end there haven't reared their ugly heads, but I have a feeling I'll start getting annoyed in a season or two.

  4. So, it seems Leno and Conan are returning in January, and I'm very conflicted. On the one hand, they're doing it to keep from laying people off, but on the other hand, how will I feel about the people who cross the picket line to appear on the show? And I'll most likely have to translate some episodes of Conan, and I'm not sure just how exactly to feel about that either. I'd much rather prefer that they did what Letterman is doing and took the WGA up on the offer for individual negotiations.

  5. I bought about half of my Christmas presents online this year, and I haven't bought any of the rest yet. Next year, I think I'll be buying them ALL online, because it's such a stress-free way of doing it.

  6. Speaking of Christmas, I'm thinking of taking two days' vacation time and getting 12 days off this Christmas. I love how my birthday is a holiday in this country. *g*

  7. I keep meaning to post a game of some sort, but the trivia game I started coming up with only has THREE questions, and the movie cap game I thought about posting on Friday just sort of fizzled when I couldn't work up the energy to cap the movies I intended to use. But I'm determined to post one of the games (or some other game) sometime this week. Even though I imagine there won't be a lot of people around to play, those of us stuck at work this week will probably need some distraction.

  8. Belated happy birthday, Laura! =)

I haven't signed the petition yet, because if I pledge to do this, I want it to actually be a positive thing, and I'm not so sure it is.

First of all, I buy A LOT of DVDs, so pledging not to, especially at a time when there's nothing else to watch would be a big thing for me. Especially since I'd probably be sacrificing my download ratio at my torrent site of choice and then still be buying the DVDs when the strike is over.

However, I would not hesitate to do this if I knew this was actually a good thing for the writers. But is it? My concerns are twofold:

  1. Will the writers' residuals from DVDs be retroactive so that they'll get more per DVD sold after the deal is struck, no matter when it was written, or will they only get more for what they write after the deal?

  2. Since the writers' only source of income at this point is the residuals, will they really thank us for depriving them of it by not buying the DVDs? I mean, if they won't be getting more money retroactively, I'd say we were doing them a disservice (while, yes, screwing The Man at the same time, but how big a factor is that really for them if they can't pay their rent or eat?), and if not, they might think those very real 4 cents are better now than a potential 8 cents at some point in the future.

However, joining wga_supporters and adding the interest "i support the strike" can't ever be wrong, can it?

I've been both watching The West Wing and reading some fic, and the layout of the the White House has been driving me CRAZY. Please tell me that some enterprising young fan has made floor plans, complete with screencaps and stuff.

One thing that really throws me is the fanon that C.J.'s office and Josh's office are connected. Huh? They're on opposite sides of the bullpen, right? But where does the second door in Josh's office lead? And where exactly is the writing staff located, in relation to the other offices? Where the heck is the Roosevelt room? And the situation room is downstairs, but where exactly? These, and many more questions, need to be answered pronto. Before I start trying to suss it all out myself. And I SUCK at that sort of stuff.

Related to my fic reading, but in no way disconnected from real world concerns, where do people get the idea that saying "I'm not a feminist" is a good thing? Do people really think that I, or any women in their right minds, want to hear that they don't advocate equal rights for us? Just because they have some distorted idea of what feminism is, that doesn't mean that it's not a matter of just that: equality. Just... URGH!
