I'm watching a ton of other stuff. Still haven't given up on Revolution, but I'm close. Same with Up All Night. Nashville is turning out to be trashy fun, but I wish they'd lay off the women being at each other's throats. I just want awesome female characters interacting and loving each other, why is that so impossible for television to deliver! Oh, except The Bletchley Circle delivered it in spades! And was only four episodes long. *sigh* Last Resort has settled into a humdrum existence, which is a shame. (I mostly want Ben Covington and Taylor Townsend to meet and mack on each other. I'm not sure how this is ever going to happen, so my interest in the show is dwindling fast.) I'm actually enjoying The Mindy Project more and more, and I hope they find their footing. Once Upon a Time is no slouch when it comes to women, but the crappy CGI just takes me out of the moment Every. Damn. Time. I had hoped they would have wizened up by the time season 2 rolled around.

Thanks to my awesome job I have access to season 2 of The Hour. But I've been holding off on watching it because what if it's amazingly awesome and I'll have no one to talk to about it? It's a hard knock life, I tells ya!

This past week I also finally started watching The Lizzie Bennet Diaries on YouTube (along with half of Tumblr it seems) and Collapse )

Books as far as the eye can see

I just finished Collapse )

I'm pretty sure my next book will be Bitterblue (I finished Fire like five minutes before I started reading Ashes of Honor), but after that I'm sort of at a loss (at least until Dark Star comes out in October). Therefore, a book poll!

Which of these books/series I'm considering would you recommend?

Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer - I keep hearing the name a lot, but I have no clue what this is about. Except I read the blurb on GoodReads, so I should know. Something about magic?
1(3.0%)
Bartimaeus Trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud (The Amulet of Samarkand) - I've started the first book, but I haven't made it past the first couple of chapters.
1(3.0%)
The Lunar Chronicles, by Marissa Meyer (Cinder) - The idea of fairytales rewritten as sci-fi/fantasy appeals to me, but there's something about the cover that puts me off.
2(6.1%)
Divergent Series, by Veronica Roth - Is this just people jumping on the Hunger Games bandwagon? Or actually good in its own right?
5(15.2%)
The Giver Series, by Lois Lowry (The Giver) - I've read good things on GoodReads, but I don't feel that the site is always to be trusted and I haven't heard anyone talking about it elsewhere.
9(27.3%)
Lorien Legacies, by Pittacus Lore (I Am Number Four) - I get the feeling this series might skew too young for me to really enjoy it? But I'm far from certain.
1(3.0%)
Harmony, by Project Itoh. - Bought it on a whim because the premise sounded interesting. It's been a couple of years now and I haven't even picked it up.
0(0.0%)
The Wind-Up Girl, by Paolo Bacigalupi - Enjoyed Shipbreaker okay, but I haven't gotten far on the sequel. Should I really be starting a separate book by the same author?
0(0.0%)
The Princess Bride, by William Goldman - I've been meaning to read this for ages.
12(36.4%)
I have another recommendation for you! It may even be a book for grown-ups!
2(6.1%)

Since Downton Abbey season 3 premieres tonight, I'm gonna cap/rewatch the Christmas Special now. Yay! New TV!

In sickness and in...well, just sickness, really,

Got sick last week and while not the most fun thing in my life, I'm pretty happy it happened last week when there was still time to get all better by next week. Because next week I start my three week vacation! Woohoo!

It turns out that once the work week was over (and believe you me, it needed to be over about three days before it actually was over, but I didn't have the luxury of taking even one day off) all I wanted to do was bundle up on my couch and create weird crap in Photoshop. So that's what I did. And then I figured I should put it somewhere so I got myself a Tumblr. THIS IS WHAT SICKNESS HAS DONE TO ME, DON'T JUDGE. It's here:

Let me know who you are so I can follow some more people (I only added a few I recognized either through name or icon).

(Tumblr is weird, y'all! I hardly had any people I was following or that were following me, but people still "liked" my posts and stuff. How does that even happen? Tags?)

But enough about fever-induced delirious episodes that lead to Unwise Decisions, what I'm really here to talk about is BOOKS. I'm going to read so much on my vacation you don't even know! (Mainly because I'm going to the Canary Islands and I'll be offline/without TV for the duration.) So what to read? Collapse )

(no subject)

I haven't posted in over a month and the sad thing is that I still don't feel like I have anything to post about. But I'm going to give it a try nonetheless, because this is getting ridiculous.

My Year in Entertainment
I'm trying for the 100 / 100 / 100 trifecta this year. That is: 100 movies watched, a 100 television seasons completed, 100 books read. I'm totally counting rereads/rewatches or I'd never make it in a million years. So far I'm doing pretty good on the books and movies front (13 books read, 9 movies watched), but the TV seasons category is probably not going to start paying serious dividends until all the May season finales.

Capping
Last year I tried to get back into capping, and I must say, it's paying off this year. Over my holiday/Christmas I capped the first discs of three of my DVD sets:

And I also started my Farscape rewatch (now stalled) by capping the first six episodes of season 1.

I Shop, Therefore I Am
I've been spending TONS of money this month. Most of it came from Christmas/birthday money, so it's not too bad (my favorite purchase was a Global chef's knife. Cost me my parents a fortune, but soooo worth it. Damn, but a good knife will just make your day when you're cooking), except that last night at three am I went on a spending spree at various online clothes stores. Collapse )

I Watch TV, Therefore I Am
At least, that's how it used to be, but while I'm liking a lot of stuff, I'm obsessive about nothing right now. The closest I get is Fringe, but it's been so long since we've had a new episode that it's not at the forefront of my mind at the moment.

Recently, I have watched:

So that's the state of me. I'll try not to crawl into a hole for another month. If I could only find the inspiration to picspam...

Long post is long

I've hardly read a thing since early June. Haven't finished a single book, actually, which is kind of depressing. My current subway read is Rosemary and Rue by seanan_mcguire, which is perfect right now because I find it so engrossing that I can just pick it up anywhere and remember exactly what's happened and what's going on. I really enjoy the world-building, the characters are intriguing and I'm even feeling kinda 'shippy about it. (Maybe it's just because I know she watched VM, but the first scene with Toby and Tybalt reminded me so much of this one from the pilot.)

I'm not even half-way, so no spoilers please!

But even though I'm enjoying the book and the subway is the only place I'm reading right now, I'm still thinking of getting a smart phone so that I can watch My Stories (not only on the subway, but probably there too. What can I say, I'M OBSESSED!). Anyway, I wanted to ask for recs, does anyone have any? The ones I'm looking at most are:

  • HTC Legend. The leading contender right now. Pluses: uses Android, fairly big screen for its size (and I can't really buy a bigger phone because my hands are tiny), REALLY PRETTY ALUMINUM CASING. Minuses: Wrong aspect ratio (would prefer 16:9), still kind of too big (but comfortable to hold, which mitigates it).

  • iPhone. Do I even need a link? The one that started it all, but I've never been a fan of iProducts. The only reason I'm even considering it is because I figure they've had a few generations to work out the kinks. Pluses: Lots and lots of apps probably? Minuses: My feelings about iProducts in general. Not to mention I'd probably have to install some sort of software and that ways lies madness, usually. Still the wrong aspect ratio.

Poll #1592687 New Phone!

Which phone should I get?

HTC Legend

iPhone
9(56.2%)
I have a rec that I'll tell you about in the comments!

Speaking of my current obsession, here's what I've watched lately:

I watched a couple of episodes of Tokyo Juliet, but it seems it was more of a melodrama (the title should have clued me in. What can I say, I'm kinda dense sometimes) and very much Not. My. Thing.

Collapse )

I'm rewatching Goong! I'm not even sure how it happened. Yesterday I woke up really early (too hot to sleep) and I just suddenly wanted to see if the 'ship development on the show was as good and as satisfying as I remember it being so I cued up the first episode. I'm currently watching episode 13.

Can I just say that rewatching Dramas is The. Best. Thing. EVER?! And can I also just say that Alt+Right Arrow (Skip ahead 10 seconds) is my new favorite function in VLC Player? Trust me, I use it wisely and I use it well.

Time to watch another South Park episode three freakin' times. It's not like I haven't already done this twice today. UGH TIMES A THOUSAND!

Camera obscura

This is getting pretty ridiculous. I just can't seem to think up anything to post these days, except for really obscure things, like "Why Clare should totally win Australia's Next Top Model season 5" and "I can't even remember the name of the winner of Make Me a Supermodel, and that's only one of the reasons I'm pissed off about the finale" and "My issues with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - let me tell you aaaaaaall about them". And since that's the case, let's get right to it, okay?

I've been reading (in most cases, re-reading) Buffy fic lately. There are plenty of fic tropes when it comes to Spike/Buffy fic, but I'm always surprised that two scenarios I find very interesting are in short supply. If they exist at all. Collapse )

I ordered an eReader! Turns out, the iLiad lost out after all, because it doesn't seem to be very stable, and the manufacturer seems to be on the verge of dicontinuing the device. Of the two remaining devices, the Cybook seems to be better for Mobipocket files, but hardly any improvements have been made to the firmware since its launch.

So I ended up with the Bebook, which I finally settled on because the company seems to have very active support, with frequent updates, and there's even an open source project with improved functions. Also, they're releasing a new device later this year that will do pretty much exactly what I wanted the iLiad to do, but since I want one NOW, I might as well get used to this (cheap) version first and buy a new one in about a year or so.

I'm so glad this is only a four day week, because I think The Dreaded Allergies have hit. I've been sneezing all evening, and my eyes are itching like crazy. *sigh*

Everybody's working for the weekend!

I'm currently halfway through The Deeper Meaning of Liff, which is like my favorite new thing. For those not in the know, it's "a dictionary of things there aren't any words for yet", by Douglas Adams and John Lloyd. All words are really geographical places. Collapse )

And let me tell you, by the time I stopped working at almost eight last night, I was feeling hynish in the extreme. But today was the first day of my five day weekend, so today is a happy day!

I've been watching a lot of TV since my last update. A LOT. I'm almost back to my January levels, after dropping to alarmingly low levels in March.

I've run out of NCIS seasons on DVD, so unless this Farscape itch gets its claws in me completely, I think the next show in the pipeline is going to be Deadwood. Finally!

I've been really good about adding 25 bucks to my Kiva account each month, and so far this year, I've made seven new loans (the repaid loans have enabled me to loan $175, even though I've only put $100 into my account)! And I think that once this year is up, I'll probably be able to make at least a loan a month in perpetuity without adding another cent.

And since I love the idea of this site so much, here's that link again:

Kiva - loans that change lives

And if you do decide to make a loan, do join the fandom team. The number of members has doubled since my last mention, and the amount loaned has quadrupled, but I still think fandom can do much more.

And if you're into country rivalry, Team Sweden just passed Team USA, which is simply pitiful, you guys. Come on, where's your patriotism?! ;-) (If you're wondering where my patriotism is, I don't care so much about the US being ahead of us, since the US population is about 30 times the size of ours. I just want us to beat those @%!#^/$ Norwegians!)

If anyone has any advice about eReaders, I'd love to hear it.

I wasted the entire day playing around with Mobipocket Reader and Creator, because no matter what, that'll probably be the platform I'll be using. And the best part is, of course, Collapse )

Because seriously, how can she be losing in the first round?! Even if it is to the Doctor. I mean, HELLO, it's Aeryn! Vote! But not if you're going to vote for the Doctor.
