SGA s04e20 The Last Man (High Def., pict. rev.)

ETA: look at the time, I think I just broke my own record here, eh?

My caps were oddly enough mostly of John, but I added quite a lot of latexed Rodney, too.

Initially I had thought that my favourite graphic novel was popular enough to provide the title for this season finale.

Jaw action; John still wants to trust Ladon (as do we).

J activates the DHD with his fist.
The autumnal outdoor scene in the beginning looked so fresh, I wish they'd stayed there a bit.

And after this short intro I seemed to have lost my mind and thought:
Oooooh, did J get his own "Out Of Gas" episode here?!?!?!

ETA: ... no.

It's written by M+M and of course J doesn't get to talk to himself for an hour, after only a line or two there's already Rodney on the phone (and Kate Hewlett in the pre-roll credits).

I did find it interesting that both J and DH sounded different under those circumstances; J was faster and D was slower. The latter is explained very soon by R's age though.

My fifth thought was that sabine might get her dearest wish, considering he's in the hot desert, "120 degrees in here".

I took a few where only the tips of his hair glinted in the dark, or a faint profile outline.

Rodney's feet were visible before John activated the hologram, sloppy.

Rodney says "it's good to say you again" and "you look good", so there's fodder.

John replies, "Yeah, compared to when I just saw you an hour ago?"

M+M even reference the SG-1 ep where a solar flare sent the team back to 1969, so by now Joe cannot be waved off with "we've done that before" because they obviously keep redoing it.

Except they sent him 48.000 years into the future.

The various stages of dealing with it.

The make-up looks good in certain lighting and shoddy in others. DH does a good job with his voice and reduced body language, but it's still the usual - IknowIknowshouldntsurpriseme - disappointment that the episode isn't about John.

Even more than in Sanctuary, the episode does not seem to be about the last man at all, but about aged Rodney. Even if they initially seem to suggest that without John, things went from bad to worse because he was just too important.

More subtly expressive faces.

And interesting light and shadow.

He looks like he heard something that smells bad, if that makes sense.

There follows something Highlander-y about Michael, whom I'm really bored of, but have a Shakespearean cap. He did that with a rather small dagger, didn't think Wraith cut that easily.

Hm. That's a true hero shot, innit.

Sand is in the way, and a sandstorm is coming. J had been in one of those before, but holo-R wasn't programmed for this eventuality.

He's visibly defeated, at least a bit. Hungry and alone, surrounded by a sandstorm. Thought I'd mention it since the ep itself really didn't leave space for it. And after a milisecond of body-acting, he asks Rodney for more old-news about his team/friends.

In another flashback, where Rodney is hugged* and thanked by Sam, there is another hit at Zelenka - again not of the usual variety where it's obvious that when R says "Zelenka might have been there as well, I don't really remember" it's just grudging admiration or confession and that Radek is just as smart and capable, but showing him bringing Rodney coffee. What the HELL has Nykl done to M+M to be rewritten like this? I'd actually be interested to hear what his fans think of this.

Love this one. Directed by Martin Wood, I'm not sure who the lead cameraman was.

... does Rodney have more hair when he's older? **

So this ep is obviously more like the finale of ST:V; * Sam's kamikaze run was again something John would also have done, her hug like his "see ya".

J has the saving idea again, but he doesn't take off anything, rather puts on more clothing for his next derring-do. Please consider the repeated accusations that he gets lost in a shoebox as you watch him stumble blindly through a sandstorm.

The flashback continues, The Last Man being only the frame for The Battle of Everyone against Michael - which means we also meet Todd again, who gets to snark at Ronon.

The only frame in this sequence that looked sharp on its own. Like the latter symbolic one (see below) I just needed this image, even if it's not much: J had leant against the door outside, not clear which of them opened it, and he falls through R.

*snort* um.

He forces himself to finally ask about Rodney's fate before he gets frozen and might never know.

Very soft voice to this soft expression as John said it didn't sound like Rodney to quit Atlantis and the SGC.

Woolsey is also back again to being mean and stuffy *shrug* and another reminder of ST:V. I didn't cap him but instead made two of a view fen might prefer:
Another splinter. Oh - ha ha.

Another one of Jennifer, to remind me of Ff instead.

And Rodney saying "Sheppard's not dead" while he still watches Jennifer's stricken expression and then turns to Woolsey. So it really is like fanfic, he resigned to save John?

No-hoho, it really is Rodney/Jennifer *depressed sigh* she did not deserve to appear so floozy like, Troi and Worf had a long time between, but she had just gotten together with Ronon only to have another writer decide the next ep to give her to Rodney (which I then read as friendship only). And that fantasy is played out on Earth and then I started laughing because she started coughing and it was even in the same autumn colours as that Hollywoodfilm aaaaaaaargh. So, seeing as there was yet another near-marriage, will they finally drop the idea of a Mrs. McKay now? PLEASE?

-> Rodney only thought of saving John in order to save Jennifer.

Lorne helped.

Cut back to John. You'd nearly forgotten about him as well, hadn't you. It's not like he actually mattered.

He has the good sense to ask about sporting results, but sadly Rodney doesn't remember any. And I only took it because of the lighting I guess.

And then we don't get any explanations or techno-babble, to refer to SG-1 alone seems to be all that's needed to justify a miracle and John returns.

John finally gets stasisised, his stomach as empty and growling as mine. He doesn't get a hug either and his only comfort is that if it fails, he just won't wake up but not suffer. Even if he wanted something else, this man just never has any choice but to be stoic, hasn't he.

Symbolic, IMO. So close, yet so different and multiply seperated. Inadvertently sympbolic only, but I did my best to get the one frame where they were still visible in their un-dead states, in blue and gold.

Young-y.

These shots were just so aw. In case I haven't said so already: it's not that here's a grown man playing with guns, it often looks to me like it's a boy playing a grown up man.

And this is how they solve the Teyla arch *arches brow* a little time-line twirling to help them catch up.

Instead of feeding the poor man, they question his story, despite his reasonable argument that he could never make it up. And Zelenka is blamed for the "glitch".

I think Doctor Radek Zelenka should stage a revolution, like yesterday. Why are there no accordeon/fiddle playing fan-groups at the MGM gates, loudly protesting in the name of the Czech?

This is another very nice shot, even if I say so myself.

** J tells R he'll be bald. And because R either can't see or doesn't realise the sideways-headsup-eyeroll is J's tell that he's lying, he's worried.

But they don't find Teyla, it's a booby trap, the building implodes and explodes, rocks fall and they all die, hahaha, the end.

Comments always welcome.
